Book Synopsis Modernising Agrifood Chains in China by : Scott Waldron
Download or read book Modernising Agrifood Chains in China written by Scott Waldron and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-09-13 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China faces major challenges in generating viable and inclusive agricultural and rural development. However, rapid economic growth provides new opportunities to meet the challenges. In particular, the development of higher value agrifood chains provides opportunities for rural households to increase their levels of specialisation, scale and incomes, and for rural areas to broaden their employment and tax bases. While an agricultural and rural development strategy based on upgrading agrifood chains is widely described and prescribed, it has not proceeded without problems and has been the subject of little rigorous scrutiny. This book presents an industry case study that draws on a novel methodological framework and reliable micro-level data to provide a nuanced, grounded and diachronic analysis of China’s efforts to upgrade agrifood chains. While China seeks to fast-track the development of high value agrifood chains through interventionist policies, a more viable and inclusive modernisation strategy is to incrementally develop mid-value agrifood chains through facilitative policies. This and other findings of the book will be of interest to policy makers, researchers and development agencies working on agricultural and rural development in China and other developing and transition countries.

Book Synopsis Rural Development in China by : Scott A. Waldron
Download or read book Rural Development in China written by Scott A. Waldron and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. The greatest challenge facing China today is to curb the growing economic divide between urban and rural people. Achieving this requires that the rural economy in general, and rural industries in particular, transform rapid growth into sustained development. However, policy makers are struggling to modernise rural industries, such as the cattle and beef industry, especially in a way that contributes to rural incomes. This book provides a systematic, detailed and up-to-date analysis of how institutional and policy reforms impact on rural and industry development in China. Academics, policy-makers and others will find that this case study offers new insights into China’s rural economy, institutional change and transition process. It will also be of interest to those concerned with ways to develop livestock industries in a way that benefits rural communities.

Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002: Changing economic, institutional and market environments have turned the spatial inter-relationships thought to exist in China upside-down. Through an investigation of the beef industry, this text builds a picture of where regionalization and integration are heading in China. It examines the impacts of market forces, industry characteristics, relative factor endowments and government influence on the spatial organization of activities. It reveals the influence of government as priorities are re-assessed and as markets and industries develop, as well as exploring the extent of regional co-ordination and co-operation and how central and local government policies and strategies reconcile. The volume also contains regional assessments of the beef industry in 12 key producing provinces and the key consumption areas of Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Book excerpt: China is one of the world's largest developing agricultural countries and dominates the international livestock revolution in terms of its aggregate size and growth rate. While the sheep meat industry is still in the early stages of development, it is an excellent example of the upheaval taking place in Chinese agriculture. This book focuses on the growing sheep meat industry while drawing on associated research from other areas of the Chinese livestock section. Using this research, the authors use the sheep meat industry case study to illustrate the broader trends that apply more generally to the Chinese livestock sector, especially in the case of ruminant livestock.

Book Synopsis China's Agricultural Investment in Australia by : Michaela Boehme
Download or read book China's Agricultural Investment in Australia written by Michaela Boehme and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-25 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically examines the driving forces, discourses, and conflicts surrounding Chinese investments in overseas farmland, with a specific focus on Australia. With growing amounts of finance channeled into the purchase of overseas food and farming assets, China has become a frontrunner in the global land rush. Unlike much of the existing literature that focuses on emerging economies such as Brazil or Africa, this book examines Chinese farmland purchases in the developed country context of Australia. Based on four years of extensive field work in Australia and China, it traces the encounters and interactions between investors, regulators, deal brokers, farmers, and eaters that shape the ways in which individual Chinese investment projects materialize in the Australian countryside. In contrast to conventional wisdom portraying China’s overseas land rush as a state-led strategy to feed the Chinese population, this book reveals that Chinese investments in Australian farmland have been propelled by the intersecting interests of international finance and business elites looking to cash in on booming Chinese demand for high-quality, Western food products. This book provides a unique transnational perspective on China’s overseas farmland purchases and shows how Chinese farmland investments produce uneven geographies of agri-food globalization that cut across national borders. Through the lens of China’s agri-engagement in Australia, this book advances our theoretical understanding of the new types of power relations and dynamics shaping an increasingly multi-polar agri-food system. This book will be useful to students and scholars of agri-food studies, Chinese studies and globalization with an interest in the global land rush and the shifting contours of the global agri-food system.

Book Synopsis One Welfare in Practice by : Tanya Stephens
Download or read book One Welfare in Practice written by Tanya Stephens and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal welfare has long been recognised as central to the role of the veterinary professional, but this is increasingly aligned with the welfare of humans and the broader environment in which we co-exist. This is the first book dedicated to the role of the veterinarian in One Welfare, a concept that recognises the interconnections between animal welfare, human wellbeing, and the environment. The book demonstrates, through a wide range of international case studies, why professional ethics and the use of good evidence is integral to this role. Contributors bring a rich variety of writings, each with their own perception of the role of the veterinarian in improving animal welfare and human wellbeing. One Welfare in Practice: The Role of the Veterinarian emphasises the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and solutions: it is essential that veterinary practitioners recognise when other professionals or disciplines need to be consulted to benefit both animals and humans. With its multiple, fascinating approaches to One Welfare, this book will inform and inspire the veterinarian to find areas where collaborative action reaps the greatest rewards. This unique book shows how veterinarians can and are contributing to improving animal and human welfare, offering practical advice as to how the profession can further engage in One Welfare in a range of settings.
