Book excerpt: Results are presented of an experimental study to develop an aluminum alloy for elevated-temperature service by determining the effect of heat treatment and exposure to elevated temperatures on the tensile properties of the various alloys subsequently cooled to room temperature, the effect of various alloy additions on the room- and elevated-temperature properties of aluminum, 6-percent-magnesium alloys, and the improvement in high-temperature creep properties of some of the optimum compostions. The composition of an experimental alloy that appears to tbe optimum and an approximate comparison of its properties with two commercial alloys are presented.

Book excerpt: Aluminium is a relatively soft yet durable, lightweight, ductile and also malleable metal on this earth. It also is a very good thermal and electrical conductor. Although it has very good properties, at high temperatures the aluminium's strength decreases. At temperatures continuously above 100°C, the strength of aluminium is affected to the extent that the weakening must be taken into account. In order to compensate this relatively weakness, alloy elements are introduced to aluminium to increase its mechanical and chemical properties. Aluminium 2017 series is highly consist of copper as it principle alloying element and this alloy can be strengthened significantly through solution heat-treating. These alloys possess a good combination of high strength and toughness but have a low levels of atmospheric corrosion resistance compare to other aluminium alloy. Basically, these alloys used for aircraft and aerospace. In this study, a various alloy is developed by adding chromium and also zirconium in aluminium metal. A 9 different casting with different percentage of chromium and zirconium added is produced. The materials are prepared by stir casting technique. Mechanical test such as hardness test, microstructure test is conducted. Before the mechanical test to be conducted, these 9 castings will undergoes a series of heat treatment process such as solution heat treatment for 6 hours then rapid quenching using water as the medium and lastly aging process starting from 0 hours to 48 hours at 250°C. From the results, the hardness value and their respective microstructure is obtained. The experimental results do not show a significant influence of Cr or Zr in these parameters, and only small differences have been observed due to only small amounts of Cr and Zr have been added to an Al-Cu alloy.

Work included tensile, creep, and rupture tests at room temperature, 300, 400, 500, and 600F. The alloy, Hiduminium RR-350 was developed as a high temperature alloy. Its room temperature properties were moderate but it held its strength quite well up to 600F. The alloy CH-70 was developed as a high strength, high performance alloy in the 60,000 ultimate tensile strength, 50,000 yield strength, and 5% elongation range. Tensile properties of CH-70 held up well at the 300 test temperature but decreased rapidly at higher temperatures.

This book was released on 1950 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the present time, 28 aluminum and 728 are used in applications in which river water attains temperatures as high as about 180 deg F. The 2S is aluminum of commercial purity, and the 72S is a high-purity aluminum-base alloy containing 1 per cent zinc. Both of these materials are relatively weak at room temperature as well as at elevated temperatures. The objective of the present work was the development of aluminum-base alloys which had higher load-carrying capacities at all temperatures up to 600 deg F. without an appreciable sacrifice in resistance to corrosion by water at elevated temperatures and also without an appreciable increase in thermal neutron cross-section value. Accordingly, the work was divided into two phases. The first dealt with the development of alloys having better load-carrying capacity, and the second was concerned with the effects of temperature on the corrosion resistance of the experimental and some commercial alloys in water. The first phase is described in Section I of the report, and the second in Section II of the report.

Book excerpt: Results are present for part of a test program on 24S-T aluminum-alloy flat compression panels with hat-section stiffeners. The results show the effect of the relative dimensions of a panel on the buckling stress and average stress at maximum load. Comparative envelope curves are presented to provide some indication of the relative structural efficiencies of hat- and Z-stiffened panels having a ratio of stiffener thicknews to skin thickness of one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tensile, fatigue, fracture toughness, and fatigue crack growth properties of cast aluminum alloys A201-T7 and A357-T6 were evaluated at 250 F and 400 F. The tensile strength of A201-T7 decreased slightly at 250 F and dropped markedly at 400 F. The A201-T7 elongation increased as temperature increased. The tensile strength of A357-T6 decreased as test temperature increased. A357-T6 ductility increased then decreased as temperature increased. Valid fracture toughness values were difficult to obtain for both alloys. A201- T7 had an average K sub Ic of 22.3 ksi in at 250 F and an average K sub Q of 25. 0 ksi in at 400 F. For A357-T6 K sub Q values were 27.5 ksi in and 18.1 ksi in at 250 F and 400 F, respectively. Constant load amplitude fatigue strength decreased for both alloys. At low Ks, fatigue crack growth resistance decreased as test temperature increased.

Book excerpt: A compilation of data collected and maintained for many years as the property of a large aluminum company, which decided in 1997 to make it available to other engineers and materials specialists. In tabular form, presents data on the tensile and creep properties of eight species of wrought alloys and five species of cast alloys in the various shapes used in applications. Then looks at the fatigue data for several alloys under a range of conditions and loads. The data represent the typical or average findings, and though some were developed years ago, the collection is the largest and most detailed available. There is no index.
