The price of gasoline more getting higher every year, this also make the life cost for each family increase. The price of electricity also increases because of the increase gasoline price. The people should spend their money with efficiently to make sure that the money that they spend is totally useful. There have two methods to save the electricity usage; the first one is using the electricity energy with smart, for example when the air-conditioner is not used it should turn off. The second is using the power factor correction technique, but this method just for inductive load such as air-conditioner, washing machine and refrigerator. The inductive load running causes the leading power factor, means the current that used is more and not totally used. To overcome this problem the reactive component is added, the capacitor is added to improve the power factor and also reduce the current that transfer to the inductive load. The microcontroller (PIC) is use as a control element that switching the capacitor to the power line. The sensor is place at the power line to giving the signal to the microcontroller, microcontroller analyze the signal that feed from the sensor. Microcontroller execute the instruction depend to the signal that giving.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A clear explanation of the technology for producing and delivering electricity Electric Power Systems explains and illustrates how the electric grid works in a clear, straightforward style that makes highly technical material accessible. It begins with a thorough discussion of the underlying physical concepts of electricity, circuits, and complex power that serves as a foundation for more advanced material. Readers are then introduced to the main components of electric power systems, including generators, motors and other appliances, and transmission and distribution equipment such as power lines, transformers, and circuit breakers. The author explains how a whole power system is managed and coordinated, analyzed mathematically, and kept stable and reliable. Recognizing the economic and environmental implications of electric energy production and public concern over disruptions of service, this book exposes the challenges of producing and delivering electricity to help inform public policy decisions. Its discussions of complex concepts such as reactive power balance, load flow, and stability analysis, for example, offer deep insight into the complexity of electric grid operation and demonstrate how and why physics constrains economics and politics. Although this survival guide includes mathematical equations and formulas, it discusses their meaning in plain English and does not assume any prior familiarity with particular notations or technical jargon. Additional features include: * A glossary of symbols, units, abbreviations, and acronyms * Illustrations that help readers visualize processes and better understand complex concepts * Detailed analysis of a case study, including a Web reference to the case, enabling readers to test the consequences of manipulating various parameters With its clear discussion of how electric grids work, Electric Power Systems is appropriate for a broad readership of professionals, undergraduate and graduate students, government agency managers, environmental advocates, and consumers.

Book excerpt: In recent years, the power quality of the ac system has become great concern due to the rapidly increased numbers of electronic equipment, power electronics and high voltage power system. Most of the commercial and industrial installation in the country has large electrical loads which are severally inductive in nature causing lagging power factor which gives heavy penalties to consumer by electricity board. This situation is taken care by PFC. PFC is the capacity of absorbing the reactive power produced by a load. In case of fixed loads, this can be done manually by switching of capacitors, however in case of rapidly varying and scattered loads it becomes difficult to maintain a high power factor by manually switching on/off the capacitors in proportion to variation of load within an installation. This drawback is overcome by using an Automatic Power Factor Correction panel. This book focuses on the design and implementation of power factor correction using PIC micro-controller chip, determine the power factor of the loaded power system, and generate proper action to calculate and to add sufficient capacitor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The novel power factor correction system described here is an improvement over existing ones because it reduces the VAR's with no switching transients, continuously; i.e., without the customary VAR-jumps that result from the usual capacitor-switchings. Work on this concept was begun in the early 1980's by Mr. Frederick Rohatyn. The invention was granted a U.S. Patent (No. 4,672,298) in June 1987. Mr. Rohatyn continued his experiments for four year's following issuance of the patent. During that time, he built several prototypes in order to develop a practical realization of his idea. The invention was evaluated technically by the U.S. Department of Commerce, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), resulting in very favorable recommendations. In the invention, the compensating reactive power is generated by a linear capacitor. A transformer is connected in series with the capacitor. The voltage applied to the capacitor terminals can be varied from zero to a maximum level. This is done by supplying the primary winding of the series transformer from a variable auto-transformer. This feature permits continuous variation of the reactive power generated by the capacitor. Based on the results of this study, the industrial partner intends to develop a line of production models and market them to power management companies worldwide.
