(*bonded joints, composite materials), (*bolted joints, composite materials), (*composite materials, joints), reinforced plastics, boron, epoxy resins, titanium, aluminum, graphite, glass textiles, laminates, manufacturing, nondestructive testingboron reinforced composites, fiberglass reinforced plastics, graphite reinforced composites Fabrication and inspection methods were established which resulted in specimens of uniform high quality fabricated to close tolerances. Both bonded and bolted joints of widths from one to ten inches were evaluated. Primary emphasis was on joints in boron-epoxy, and between boron-epoxy and titanium or aluminum. However, limited evaluations of graphite- epoxy/titanium and fiberglas-epoxy/titanium were included. Joint configurations evaluated were single and double splice butt joints; boron-epoxy to metal stepped single scarf joints; and surface to understructure attachments. All laminates and specimens were inspected non- destructively. Base material properties and process control measures were verified by destructive testing. Developing testing techniques and actual specimen testing was a major portion of the program.

This book was released on 1971 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Initial program efforts were directed primarily to planning, joint design, joint analysis and basic evaluation of the boron material. The planning efforts resulted in the establishment of the type of specimens, specimen identification, test parameters, and number of specimens required for accomplishing the objectives of this period a closed form joint analysis has been developed for the elastic condition. This solution has also been expanded to include nonlinear adhesive properties for ultimate joint strength analysis. The majority of the Phase I bonded joints have been fabricated and tested. All the baseline data have been generated and constant life diagrams developed for the basic bonded specimen configuration. Correlation between constant amplitude-frequency fatigue testing and spectrum loading has been initiated. Failure mode studies have been conducted for specimens subjected to various types of loading and definite failure modes have been established for specific loading conditions. (Author, modified-PL).

Download or read book Development of an Understanding of the Fatigue Phenomena of Bonded and Bolted Joints in Advanced Filamentary Composite Materials. Volume 1. Analysis Methods written by and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main body of this volume is divided into three chapters, as follows: Closed Form Analysis Methods; Finite Element Analyses; Photoelastic Stress Analysis. Emphasis was placed on the development of closed form analysis procedures for bonded joints in laminated composites. A COMPREHENSIVE LINEAR ANALYSIS METHOD AND ASSOCIATED COMPUTER PROGRAM (BONJO 1) has been developed. Numerical results obtained with this program are compared with finite element analyses, strain gage data, and photoelastic results. A 6Plastic Zone6 approach was used to extend BONJO 1 to include joints with ideally elastic-plastic adhesive stress-strain behavior. The theoretical development of a rigorous non- linear analysis procedure for bonded joints has been presented. However, this method was not carried beyond the exploratory stage. Finite element analyses used to evaluate the step lap bonded joints and bolted joints are presented and discussed. Photoelastic stress analysis procedures used in the program are described in the final chapter together with the results obtained.

Download or read book Development of an Understanding of the Fatigue Phenomena of Bonded and Bolted Joints in Advanced Filamentary Composite Materials. Volume 3. Fatigue Analysis and Fatigue Mode Studies written by and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of the empirical program undertaken to increase the basic understanding of the fatigue phenomena of advanced composites joints. Four basic design concepts have been evaluated and include both bonded and mechanically fastened joints. A broad spectrum of joint geometry variations and loading conditions are included to identify the significant parameters affecting the fatigue endurance of composite joints. Test data and analyses are included for constant amplitude testing and program fatigue loading. Realistic spectrum and block spectrum data are evaluated using Miners Cumulative Damage Theory. In conjunction with other analyses and evaluations, failure mode studies were conducted on the fracture surface of failed specimens. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) photomicrographs were used for this failure study. Specific failure modes related to specimen configuration, loading conditions, and fatigue history were defined. Failure modes that have been identified and related to loading conditions include; shear in the resin versus load direction and stress ratio (R); peel in the laminate due to a cleavage load; peel or tension fracture due to tension-tension fatigue. Some specimens subjected to complex loading exhibited multiple failure modes.

Book excerpt: The advantages of composite materials include a high specific strength and stiffness, formability, and a comparative resistance to fatigue cracking and corrosion. However, not forsaking these advantages, composite materials are prone to a wide range of defects and damage that can significantly reduce the residual strength and stiffness of a structu
Book Synopsis Composite Joints and Connections by : P Camanho

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing use of composites over metals for structural applications has made a thorough understanding of the behaviour of composite joints in various applications essential for engineers, but has also presented them with a new set of problems. Composite joints and connections addresses these differences and explores the design, modelling and testing of bonded and bolted joints and connections. Part one discusses bolted joints whilst part two examines bonded joints. Chapters review reinforcement techniques and applications for composite bolted and bonded joints and investigate the causes and effects of fatigue and stress on both types of joint in various applications and environments. Topics in part one include metal hybridization, glass-reinforced aluminium (GLARE), hybrid fibre metal laminates (FML), glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) and carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. Topics in part two include calculation of strain energy release rates, simulating fracture and fatigue failure using cohesive zone models, marine and aerospace applications, advanced modelling, stress analysis of bonded patches and scarf repairs. Composite joints and connections is a valuable reference for composite manufacturers and composite component fabricators, the aerospace, automotive, shipbuilding and civil engineering industries and for anyone involved in the joining and repair of composite structures. Explores the design, modelling and testing of bonded and bolted joints and connections Reviews reinforcement techniques and applications for composite bolted and bonded joints Investigates the causes and effects of fatigue and stress on bolted and bonded joints in various applications and environments
