Book excerpt: An unbonded portland cement concrete overlay of concrete pavements (UBOL) is a rehabilitation technique in which the new overlay is isolated from the existing distressed pavement using a separator layer. Typically, a 1-to 2-in asphalt separator layer (or interlayer) is used. Recent innovations in the unbonded overlay technology have led to the adoption of new types of interlayers, such as non-woven geotextile fabric, as well as the use of overlays with joint spacings and layouts that are much shorter than conventional joint spacings. The effect of these design alternatives on the performance of the UBOL cannot be accounted for using currently available design procedures. This report documents the development of a new mechanistic-empirical design procedure for UBOL. It presents the results of laboratory and field studies; the calibration of an advanced structural (Totski) model that better captures the effects of the interlayer and separation between the overlay and the existing pavement; and the development of cracking and faulting performance prediction models for UBOL. The performance prediction models were incorporated into a rudimentary software tool, Pitt UBOL-ME, that can be used for the design and analysis of UBOL. Unlike prior UBOL design procedures, Pitt UBOL-ME can be used to quantify the effect of the performance of the interlayer on the performance of the UBOL and can be used for both conventional and short joint spacings.

Book Synopsis Portland Cement Concrete Overlays by : Kurt D. Smith
Download or read book Portland Cement Concrete Overlays written by Kurt D. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the latest information on the design, construction and performance of portland cement concrete (PCC) overlays. It describes the four types of PCC overlays that are commonly used in highway pavement applications: bonded PCC overlays, unbonded PCC overlays, conventional whitetopping and ultra-thin whitetopping. Recommended applications, critical design elements, current overlay design methodologies, recommended construction practices, and performance highlights are described for each overlay type. Information is also provided on the selection of PCC overlays as possible rehabilitation alternatives for existing pavements. Taken together, this document addresses the current "state of the technology" of PCC overlays placed on both existing PCC pavements and on existing hot-mix asphalt pavements.
Book Synopsis Concrete Pavement Design, Construction, and Performance by : Norbert Delatte
Download or read book Concrete Pavement Design, Construction, and Performance written by Norbert Delatte and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2007-09-12 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing the interactions between the different design and construction variables and techniques this book illustrates best practices for constructing economical, long life concrete pavements. The book proceeds in much the same way as a pavement construction project. First, different alternatives for concrete pavement solutions are outlined. The desired performance and behaviour parameters are identified. Next, appropriate materials are outlined and the most suitable concrete proportions determined. The design can be completed, and then the necessary construction steps for translating the design into a durable facility are carried out. Although the focus reflects highways as the most common application, special features of airport, industrial, and light duty pavements are also addressed. Use is made of modeling and performance tools such as HIPERPAV and LTPP to illustrate behavior and performance, along with some case studies. As concrete pavements are more complex than they seem, and the costs of mistakes or of over-design can be high, this is a valuable book for engineers in both the public and private sectors.
