Book excerpt: The problem of trace analysis at the parts per trillion level in environmental samples has been a challenging one for analytical chemists during the past two decades. The presence of substances in very low concentrations in a complex matrix demands the development of both selective and sensitive detectors for their determination by gas chromatography. The photoionization detector (PID) now commercially available is capable of providing the very high sensitivity desired for trace level analysis. Indeed its low volume ionization chamber make it suitable for use with capillary columns. The PID also lends itself to the development of an element selective detector. This could be expected by catalytic conversion of the effluent to H2S, PH3, and NH3. Scrubbers to remove unwanted gases could yield e.g. PH3 only thereby making the detector P selective. Sensitivities at the pg level could be possible. Additional key words: Chemical detection; Ammonia; Phosphorus; Phosphine.

Book excerpt: A timely and authoritative review of the current state of selective detector technology This book was written for professionals who need to keep abreast of the latest developments and emerging trends in selective detectors and their applications. It comprises contributions from many of the leading innovators and pioneers in the field, including James Lovelock, inventor of the electron capture detector, whose own contribution is certain to be a rich source of ideas and inspiration for all who read it. Offering a balanced presentation of theory and practice, Selective Detectors: Reviews the theory and underlying principles of a broad range of devices Discusses, in detail, capabilities and current applications, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary applications, including environmental, petrochemical, biomedical, and quality control Explores, in depth, the latest advances and emerging technologies Arms readers with a wealth of practical "how-to" information on selecting, using, modifying, and building selective detectors for a wide range of applications Future historians studying the late twentieth century will almost certainly come to view the advent of selective detectors as among the truly formative technological developments of the period. Anyone who doubts this thesis need only consider the impact of selective detection on environmental quality, the sciences, technology, medicine, business and industry, public policy, quality control, and many other fields. Yet, despite the obvious importance of selective detectors, there continues to be a scarcity of books dedicated to helping professionals keep abreast of the latest developments and emerging trends in this in fluential technology. This timely and authoritative review of the current state of selective detector technology fills that gap. This book focuses on the newest selective detectors for chromatographic analysis. Conceived and shepherded into existence by a major figure in analytical chemistry and environmental analysis, it includes contributions from many of the leading innovators and pioneers in the field. Most prominent among these is Dr. James Lovelock, inventor of the electron capture detector, whose chapter on the history and development of selective detectors will be a rich source of ideas and inspiration for all who read it. Offering a balanced presentation of theory and practice, Selective Detectors reviews the theory and underlying principles of selective detectors; discusses, in detail, their current capabilities and applications; explores the latest advances and emerging technologies; and arms readers with a wealth of practical "how-to" information on selecting, using, modifying, and building selective detectors for a wide range of applications. Selective Detectors is an invaluable resource for analytical chemists and technicians working in a variety of disciplines, including environmental science, petrochemical industries, the food and beverage industries, biotechnology, medicine, and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first detailed description of method development in chromatography - the overall process of which may be summarized as: method selection, phase selection, selectivity optimization, and system optimization. All four aspects receive attention in this book. Chapter 1 gives a short introduction, describes chromatographic theory and nomenclature, and outlines the method development process. Chapter 2 describes guidelines for method selection, and quantitative concepts for characterizing and classifying chromatographic phases. Selective separation methods, from both gas and liquid chromatography are given in Chapter 3; the main parameters of each method are identified and simple, quantitative relations are sought to describe their effects. Criteria by which to judge the quality of separation are discussed in Chapter 4 with clear recommendations for different situations. The specific problems involved in the optimization of chromatographic selectivity are explained in Chapter 5. Optimization procedures, illustrated by examples, are extensively described and compared on the basis of a number of criteria. Suggestions are made both for the application of different procedures and for further research. The optimization of programmed analysis receives special attention in Chapter 6, and the last chapter summarizes the optimization of the chromatographic system, including the optimization of the efficiency, sensitivity and instrumentation. Those involved in developing chromatographic methods or wishing to improve existing methods will value the detailed, structured way in which the subject is presented. Because optimization procedures and criteria are described as elements of a complete optimization package, the book will help the reader to understand, evaluate and select current and future commercial systems.
