Book excerpt: The results of a research project to investigate the use of time domain reflectometry (TDR) to monitor landslide movement are reported here. This method uses the changes in the signature of a voltage pulse traveling along a coaxial cable grouted into a borehole. In this research three coaxial cables (RG59/U) were grouted into boreholes in the Grapevine landslide, Kern County, California adjacent to Interstate Highway 5.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GeoMeasurements by Pulsing TDR Cables and Probes examines Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) research and provides information on its use as a robust, reliable, and economical production tool. Common uses for TDR technology include telecommunications and power industries, but the text examines applications such as measurement of moisture of unsaturated soils; detection of fluids for leak and pollution; measurement of water levels for hydrological purposes; measurement of water pressures beneath dams; and deformation and stability monitoring of mines, slopes, and structures. Chapters discuss: basic physics of signal generation, transmission, and attenuation along the coaxial cable probe designs and procedures for calibration as well as the variation in probe responses to changes in water content and soil mineralogy variations in waveform characteristics associated with cable, deformation, cable calibration, and installation techniques for metallic cables in rock several cases demonstrating the use of TDR cables in soil as well as weathered and soft rock a rationale for the use of compliant cable in soil the use of metallic cable (MTDR) and optical fiber (OTDR) to monitor response of structures sensor/transducer components, connections from the sensors to the TDR pulser/sampler, and system control methods available software for transmission and analysis of TDR signatures The diverse interest and terminology within the TDR community tends to obscure commonalities and the universal physical principles underlying the technology. The authors seek to crystallize the basic principles among the seemingly divergent specialties using TDR technology in geomaterials. By examining varied experiences, GeoMeasurements by Pulsing TDR Cables and Probes provides a synergistic text necessary to unify the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book intends to decipher the knowledge in the advancement of understanding, detecting, predicting, and monitoring landslides. The number of massive landslides and the damages they cause has increased across the globe in recent times. It is one of the most devastating natural hazards that cause widespread damage to habitat on a local, regional, and global scale. International experts provide their experience in landslide research and practice to help stakeholders mitigate and predict potential landslides. The book comprises chapters on: Dynamics, mechanisms, and processes of landslides; Geological, geotechnical, hydrological, and geophysical modelling for landslides; Mapping and assessment of hazard, vulnerability, and risk associated with landslides; Monitoring and early warning of landslides; Application of remote sensing and GIS techniques in monitoring and assessment of landslides. The book will be of interest to researchers, practitioners, and decision-makers in adapting suitable modern techniques for landslide study.

Book excerpt: The study employs time-domain reflectometry (TDR) technology for landslide monitoring to explore rock deformation mechanism and to estimate locations of potential sliding surfaces in several landslide areas, Taiwan, over ten years. Comparing to laboratory and field testing, sliding surfaces in landslide areas occurred mainly at two types, namely shear and extension failure. The TDR technology is used for field monitoring to analyze locations of sliding surfaces and to quantify the magnitude of the sliding through laboratory shear and extension tests. There are several TDR-monitoring stations in six alpine landslide areas in the middle of Taiwan for long-term monitoring. A relation between TDR reflection coefficients and shear displacements was employed for a localized shear deformation in the field. Furthermore, the type of a cable rupture for the TDR monitoring in landslides can be determined as shear, extension, or compound failure through the field TDR waveforms. Overall, the TDR technology is practically used for a long-term monitoring system to detect the location and magnitude of slope movement in landslide areas.

Book excerpt: "An international multi-year project is investigating and monitoring the Ripley Landslide, 7 km south of Ashcroft, British Columbia. The aim of this collaborative work is to better understand and manage landslides along Canada's western railway corridor. From 2013 to 2016, the China Geological Survey (CGS) and Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) collaborated to test and evaluate experimental fibre Bragg grating (FBG) and Brillouin optical time domain reflectometry (BOTDR) technologies on an active landslide for the first time in Canada. Open File 8258 describes the operational procedures for these monitoring systems. FBG and BOTDR monitoring systems were installed on a lock-block retaining wall that separates the Canadian National (CN) and Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) tracks. This vital component of railway infrastructure crosses the southern extent of the main slide body; and was monitored with the aims of better understanding the deformation mechanisms and potential triggers for sudden movement; and managing the risks associated with railway operations. Monitoring data was processed on site then accessed by wireless transmitter from remote terminals at the CGS and GSC offices. Results, discussed in the context of interpretations from other physical surveys of the landslide, provide new insight into the nature and distribution of surficial earth materials, their stratigraphic relationships, internal structure of the landslide, and structural integrity of critical railway infrastructure. This study demonstrates that optical fibre sensing real-time techniques are viable, cost effective monitoring methods that can ensure the safety and security of the railways, thereby reducing risks to national public safety, the environment, natural resources and international economies"--Abstract, p. 5.
