Book excerpt: Many workers in the behavioral sciences and human factors technologies have expressed the need for better classification systems to understand and apply the vast amounts of data acquired about man for the performance of jobs and tasks. Reviews of existing classification systems, reported in previous technical reports in this series, disclosed more expressions of needs for these systems than actual systems in existence. Therefore, as a means for more systematically exploring the issues and options with respect to human performance classification, a heuristic model is presented. With this as a framework the uses of human classification performance systems, their content, and the methods available for their development are each discussed in turn. The report concludes with some recommendations about what the author believes is required if significant progress is to be made in the further development of human performance classification systems. Book excerpt: This November 1978 symposium was convened by the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration's Office of Criminal Justice Education and Training in Dallas, Texas, to explore the role of education and training in human resources development. The symposium considered criminal justice manpower needs, the development of comprehensive manpower planning methodologies, and police officer standards and training. Participants looked at job analysis procedures, job task analysis applications, an occupational research project of the U.S. Air Force, a task analysis of the special agent job by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, basic training development in Texas, and entry-level police selection and test validation in Washington. Participants also focused on a statewide job analysis of the police patrol officer position in Michigan, job task analysis of Minnesota patrol officers, Wisconsin's law enforcement standards for conducting job analysis, job analysis of entry-level police officers in Georgia and California, historical background of police training in New York, and essential elements in a comprehensive human resources program for criminal justice jobs.

Book excerpt: In recent years there has been a crescive interest in the science of taxonomy in general, and in behavioral classifications in particular. In the report, past efforts are reviewed in an attempt to assess the 'state-of-the-art' and to provide procedural guidelines for future taxonomic efforts. Approaches to and dilemmas encountered in attempting to develop systems of classification are discussed. Special consideration is given to those systems oriented toward the organization and understanding of information about human task performance. Within this context the taxonomic issues of purpose, descriptive bases, and methodological approaches are discussed in terms of available alternatives. The report leads to the conclusion that behavioral taxonomy is still in its infancy and that truly powerful systems of classification have yet to be developed. The paper suggests how substantive progress may be made by attempting development of a task classification system based upon numerical taxonomic procedures. (Author).

Book excerpt: The development and evaluation of systems for describing and classifying tasks which can improve generalization of research results about human performance is essential for organizing, communicating, and implementing these research findings. The present research was undertaken to develop one such system which is based on an information processing model. A theoretical model for task classification, generated as one of several approaches to development of a taxonomy of human performance, is presented. A method for empirical evaluation of the model is described in terms of a two-fold iterative procedure involving computer simulations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper reports on a research effort to assess the feasibility of constructing a data base for improving generalization of reasearch results about human performance. A criterion measure task classification system was applied to a portion of the existing literature on learning and environmental variables. Optimum distribution of practice and knowledge of results were the two learning variables investigated. The environmental factor investigated was the effects of different noise intensities. It was shown that for certain variables and certain task conditions the categorization system was effective in predicting human performance across a variety of tasks. Implications for developing a data base are described. (Author).
