However, a full understanding of such process is still lacking. In order to have a better understanding of the phenomena, numerical modeling of sprays would be a valuable tool in designing and assessing the performance of the combustion systems. Most multiphase computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models are classified into two categories: Eulerian–Lagrangian and Eulerian–Eulerian models. Although Eulerian–Lagrangian models are traditionally the most common choice for modeling spray problems, they include a large number of empirical sub–models and hence are very sensitive to fine tuning and rely heavily on the experiments. In this book, a newly developed mathematical model for calculating droplet break–up frequency based on both drag and turbulence induced fragmentation stresses is presented. The droplet break–up model was introduced into a CFD methodology based on the Eulerian–Eulerian approach, in which the mass and momentum conservation equations are solved for both phases. The CFD solver couples the population balance equation along with Navier–Stokes equations for tracking droplet diameters. The proposed mathematical model has the advantage of taking into account the effects of drag and turbulence stresses on the atomization process while abandoning the common disadvantages of current Lagrangian models. Numerical simulations were performed to model a coaxial air–blast atomizer using both the traditional Lagrangian model and the new Eulerian model.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simplex atomizers (pressure-swirl atomizers) are widely used in air-breathing gas turbine engines as they have good atomization characteristics and are relatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture. To reduce emissions, it is critical to design fuel atomizers that can produce spray with a predetermined droplet size distribution at the desired combustor location (small mean droplet diameters and uniform local air/fuel ratios). Manufacturing methods are now available where complex atomizer geometries can be easily obtained. However to use such methods, the influence of atomizer geometry on its performance must be well understood. In this dissertation, a two-dimensional axisymmetric computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model based on the Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method to predict the flow in pressure-swirl atomizers was developed. The Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian method was applied so that the free interface between gas and liquid could be tracked sharply and accurately. The developed code was validated by comparison of predictions with experimental data for large scale prototype and with semi-empirical correlations at small scale. The computational predictions agreed well with experimental data for the film thickness at the exit, spray cone angle, and the pressure drop across the atomizer as well as velocity field in the swirl chamber. Using the validated code, a comprehensive parametric study on simplex atomizer performance was conducted. The geometric parameters of atomizer covered in this study include: atomizer constant, the ratio of length to diameter in swirl chamber, the ratio of length to diameter in orifice, the swirl chamber to orifice diameter ratio, inlet slot angle, trumpet angle, trumpet length, and swirl chamber convergent angle. The effects of these geometric parameters on the atomizer performance were studied for a fixed mass flow rate through the atomizer as well as for a fixed pressure drop across the atomizer. The atomizer performance was described in term of dimensionless film thickness at the exit, discharge coefficient and spray cone half angle. To address applications in pharmaceutical and food processing industry, flow of non-Newtonian power-law fluids through pressure-swirl atomizers was considered. Detailed flow patterns inside the atomizer for shear-thinning, Newtonian and shear-thickening fluids were investigated. A range of power-law index from 0.7 to 1.3 was considered. With a fixed flow rate through the atomizer, the shear-thickening fluids exhibited higher film thickness at exit, lower spray angle, and higher discharge coefficient compared to Newtonian fluids. For the range of power-law index considered in this study, the atomizer performance parameters for shear-thinning fluids showed small change from Newtonian fluids. The variation of atomizer performance with the atomizer constant was delineated for different power-law index.

Book excerpt: The second edition of this long-time bestseller provides a framework for designing and understanding sprays for a wide array of engineering applications. The text contains correlations and design tools that can be easily understood and used in relating the design of atomizers to the resulting spray behavior. Written to be accessible to readers with a modest technical background, the emphasis is on application rather than in-depth theory. Numerous examples are provided to serve as starting points for using the information in the book. Overall, this is a thoroughly updated edition that still retains the practical focus and readability of the original work by Arthur Lefebvre.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical tool to study the physics of sprays is Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) via Volume- of-Fluid (VoF) methods. A noteworthy limitation of this method is its high computational power demand. In the cases of industrial sprays, the total number of computational cells required can be up to a trillion. Consequently, alternative strategies for alleviating the excessive computational burden of a DNS while still preserving a comparable level of solution fidelity are required. One strategy is the Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) method. The AMR serves to dynamically allocate high-resolution grids in the regions requiring them. Due to such a feature, the AMR is expected to provide a speedup benefit against a traditional static mesh. A detailed analysis of the AMR speedup promise for spray problems is performed. Results show that the envisioned advantage does not hold for high-velocity sprays, and two factors cause it. The first and obvious one is the number of AMR grids, which grows as the calculation proceeds. The second and less apparent factor is the decay of the cell-base speedup, which is related to the Frobenius condition number. The other engineering approach is to combine VoF and Lagrangian-Eulerian (LE) strategies (VoFLE). In this method, the liquid bodies that local grids can characterize are numerically captured by VoF. The liquid elements that fall below the local mesh resolutions, i.e., unresolved structures, are transitioned into discrete Lagrangian droplets and handled in a LE fashion. We present a new VoFLE method by including the capabilities of computing potential further breakup of unresolved structures. The calculation of breakup is based on Maximum Entropy Formalism (MEF) conditional on the satisfaction of mass, momentum, and energy conservation constraints. Reasonable agreements are shown in the comparison between the predicted mean Sauter mean diameter and the experimental measurements. Last, further expansion of the VoFLE solver for handling compressibility effect, heat transfer, and Lagrangian droplet vaporization is briefly addressed. This work is ongoing, and more detailed analyses and improvements are planned.
