Book excerpt: The Ontario Pavement Analysis of Costs system has been in service for Ontario asphalt flexible pavement design and performance prediction since the early 1970s. It uses a deflection-based deterministic model for selecting the best pavement structural design alternative in terms of pavement functional and structural performance and the total life-cycle costs. However, because of the existence of uncertainties and variations in pavement design variables and parameters in the pavement deterioration models, it is not adequate to apply deterministic models to all situations of pavement management. It is therefore necessary to predict pavement performance by employing probabilistic-based models. In this paper, a new concept of system conversion between a deterministic model and a probabilistic model is discussed first. A method by which a deterministic pavement performance prediction model, such as the Ontario asphalt pavement deterioration model, can be converted into a probabilistic model is presented. A transformed probabilistic model is constructed by generating a set of time-related nonhomogeneous Markovian transition probability matrices, which is determined by Monte Carlo simulation. Each of the transition probability matrices characterizes the pavement deterioration rate for the given pavement age and traffic characteristics. A Bayesian technique is then employed to update the predicted pavement performance in terms of the pavement condition state vectors and expected pavement condition state values by integrating additional information such as the actually measured performance data of the pavement.

Book excerpt: A result of the Strategic Highway Research Program's asphalt research is the development of performance-based specifications for asphalt binders and mixtures to control 3 distress modes: rutting; fatigue cracking; and thermal cracking. The SHRP A-005 project developed detailed pavement performance models to support these binder and mixture specifications and performance-based mixture designs. This report documents the findings of this extensive research effort and provides supporting data for the performance-based specifications and mixture design procedure called SUPERPAVE. The A-005 contract developed and used a sophisticated, mechanistic-based pavement performance model to define the relationships between asphalt binder and mixture properties and pavement distress. A comprehensive pavement performance model was developed that predicts the amount of fatigue cracking, thermal cracking and rutting in asphalt concrete pavements with time, using results from the accelerated laboratory tests. The pavement performance models for each distress were also used to confirm the relevant binder and mixture properties established by other SHRP contractors. The model has 3 parts: a mixture evaluation model; a pavement response model; and a pavement distress model.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pavements represent the largest single area of investment in highway transport infrastructure. Like any large investment, they deserve good management. This is particularly so, because pavements are also subjected to fairly rapid deterioration. A total pavement management system (PMS) consists of a coordinated' set of activities, all directed toward achieving the best value for the available public funds in providing and operating smooth, safe and economical pavements. The measurement and prediction (modeling) of pavement performance is a cornerstone of any PMS for both network and project level, because it is necessary for both the financial planning/budgeting and pavement life cycle economic evaluation. A pilot PMS for Turkey's roads has been carried out for 72 hot-mix asphalt concrete sections within the Ankara region, The necessary data (including FWD deflections, surface distress, roughness, etc. were collected and evaluated. A follow-up to the network project was a study to develop a project level performance prediction model for Turkey's roads by using the network data. The results of the following study are reported in this paper. In one part of the study, a relationship between PQI (Pavement Quality Index) vs. cumulative traffic loading and age is developed by using multivariate linear regression analysis after class ification of the sections according to thickness (EGT), subgrade' strength (MK) and cumulative traffic loading (ESAL). In another part, a set of performance curves in terms of PSI vs. ESAL are drawn for different SN (structural number) values. These SN values are calculated by running the software DARWin of AASHT0'93 for Turkey's condition representing different compositions for different traffic and different subgrade strengths. In the third part of the study, the OPAC (Ontario Pavement Analysis o r! Costs) performance model which is based on a relationship between subgrade deflection and pavement deterioration, is modified for Turkey's roads which are extremely high trafficked when compared to Ontario's In order to achieve more reliable performance curves, it is recommended that all these approaches should be further verified by means of periodic data collection and evaluation. Book excerpt: Extensive data were collected from 327 airfield pavement features at 12 U.S. Air Force bases. The data, which provided a wide range of information on designs, materals, traffic, and climate, were used to develop PCI and key distress prediction models for both asphalt-concrete and jointed-concrete-surfaced pavements. Four satisfactory models were developed for predicting PCI for PCC and AC/PCC pavements, corner breaks in PCC pavements, and reflection cracking in AC/PCC pavements. Additional data were collected from 101 airfield pavement features at five of the Air Force bases originally surveyed to evaluate the four prediction models. The evaluation showed that the PCI prediction models are satisfactory. The reflection cracking model also provided reasonable prediction of eight pavement features. However, verification of the corner break model showed that it has a high standard deviation of prediction. Evaluation of the models for each of the five bases showed that predictions for some of the bases were much better than others, possibly because some of the material properties, climatic factors, and traffic conditions in certain bases were not well represented in the overall model. Thus, it was concluded that localized modeling could provide much more accurate predictions.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) was developed under National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Project 1-37A as a novel mechanistic-empirical procedure for the analysis and design of pavements. The MEPDG was subsequently supported by AASHTO's DARWin-ME and most recently marketed as AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design software as of February 2013. Although the core design process and computational engine have remained the same over the years, some enhancements to the pavement performance prediction models have been implemented along with other documented changes as the MEPDG transitioned to AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design software. Preliminary studies were carried out to determine possible differences between AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design, MEPDG (version 1.1), and DARWin-ME (version 1.1) performance predictions for new jointed plain concrete pavement (JPCP), new hot mix asphalt (HMA), and HMA over JPCP systems. Differences were indeed observed between the pavement performance predictions produced by these different software versions. Further investigation was needed to verify these differences and to evaluate whether identified local calibration factors from the latest MEPDG (version 1.1) were acceptable for use with the latest version (version 2.1.24) of AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design at the time this research was conducted. Therefore, the primary objective of this research was to examine AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design performance predictions using previously identified MEPDG calibration factors (through InTrans Project 11-401) and, if needed, refine the local calibration coefficients of AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design pavement performance predictions for Iowa pavement systems using linear and nonlinear optimization procedures. A total of 130 representative sections across Iowa consisting of JPCP, new HMA, and HMA over JPCP sections were used. The local calibration results of AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design are presented and compared with national and locally calibrated MEPDG models.
