Book excerpt: Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has been gaining increasing attention as a brain-computer interface (BCI) modality. However, communication rates offered by this technology are not yet practical for clinical implementation. This thesis investigates the feasibility of enhancing the speed and accuracy attainable by NIRS-BCIs. To date, most studies have utilized activity from a single cortical region, particularly the anterior prefrontal cortex (aPFC), to discern two non-motor-based mental states. However, cognitive processes require coordination between several, spatially-distributed areas. Additional cortical information may help improve classification of mental states, particularly combinations of more than two. Furthermore, testing has largely focused on offline analyses, despite the possibility of enhanced cortical control attainable with feedback. Lastly, NIRS-BCI work has primarily involved able-bodied participants, most of which were offline. In an initial offline study, we investigated the value of utilizing cortical activity measured from multiple brain regions to differentiate all possible combinations of two cognitive tasks and rest. With prefrontal and parietal measurements, average binary and ternary accuracies exceeded 80% and 70%, respectively. Accuracies and information transfer rates (ITRs) improved significantly with the inclusion of measurements beyond the aPFC. A second study was conducted to evaluate ternary classification accuracies achievable in an online system that offered classification feedback. An average online accuracy of 74.2 Âą 14.8% was attained, representing further improvements in NIRS-BCI speed and accuracy. In a final study, we tested an online system developed for a candidate BCI user with severe, congenital muscular impairments. The binary system made use of prefrontal measurements beyond the aPFC and was tailored for the user prior to each online session. Offline and online accuracies of 66.9 Âą 9.11% and 63.33%, respectively, were achieved. Collectively, these findings demonstrate the value of considering multiple brain regions and offering online classification feedback to realize a faster and more accurate NIRS-BCI.

Book excerpt: What can we learn from spontaneously occurring brain and other physiological signals about an individual’s cognitive and affective state and how can we make use of this information? One line of research that is actively involved with this question is Passive Brain-Computer-Interfaces (BCI). To date most BCIs are aimed at assisting patients for whom brain signals could form an alternative output channel as opposed to more common human output channels, like speech and moving the hands. However, brain signals (possibly in combination with other physiological signals) also form an output channel above and beyond the more usual ones: they can potentially provide continuous, online information about an individual’s cognitive and affective state without the need of conscious or effortful communication. The provided information could be used in a number of ways. Examples include monitoring cognitive workload through EEG and skin conductance for adaptive automation or using ERPs in response to errors to correct for a behavioral response. While Passive BCIs make use of online (neuro)physiological responses and close the interaction cycle between a user and a computer system, (neuro)physiological responses can also be used in an offline fashion. Examples of this include detecting amygdala responses for neuromarketing, and measuring EEG and pupil dilation as indicators of mental effort for optimizing information systems. The described field of applied (neuro)physiology can strongly benefit from high quality scientific studies that control for confounding factors and use proper comparison conditions. Another area of relevance is ethics, ranging from dubious product claims, acceptance of the technology by the general public, privacy of users, to possible effects that these kinds of applications may have on society as a whole. In this Research Topic we aimed to publish studies of the highest scientific quality that are directed towards applications that utilize spontaneously, effortlessly generated neurophysiological signals (brain and/or other physiological signals) reflecting cognitive or affective state. We especially welcomed studies that describe specific real world applications demonstrating a significant benefit compared to standard applications. We also invited original, new kinds of (proposed) applications in this area as well as comprehensive review articles that point out what is and what is not possible (according to scientific standards) in this field. Finally, we welcomed manuscripts on the ethical issues that are involved. Connected to the Research Topic was a workshop (held on June 6, during the Fifth International Brain-Computer Interface Meeting, June 3-7, 2013, Asilomar, California) that brought together a diverse group of people who were working in this field. We discussed the state of the art and formulated major challenges, as reflected in the first paper of the Research Topic.

Book excerpt: Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) are being investigated as an access pathway to communication for individuals with physical disabilities as they bypass the need for voluntary motor control to operate. However, to date, minimal research has investigated the use of BCIs for children. This thesis describes the development of a paediatric brain-computer interface to identify positive and negative emotional states from changes in hemodynamic activity of the pre-frontal cortex. To train and test the BCI, 10 typically developing children aged 8-14 underwent a session of emotion induction trials while their hemodynamic activity was measured with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). BCI performance was evaluated both offline, using cross-validation, and online, using real-time prediction results. Offline differentiation rates were comparable to studies with adult populations, and online prediction was feasible, yet failed to surpass the 70% accuracy threshold of 'effective' BCI use. Interparticipant and intersession variability in BCI performance was also investigated.

Book excerpt: Auditory brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) serve as an access pathway for individuals who present as locked-in and have concomitant visual impairments, but they do not perform as well as visual BCIs. Since hybrid BCIs that combine electroencephalography (EEG) and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) outperform unimodal BCIs in motor imagery tasks, we hypothesized that such a hybrid BCI would outperform a unimodal BCI in an auditory oddball task. Eleven non-disabled adults (aged 25.6 Âą 3.3) participated in two offline sessions and eight returned for a third online session. While combined EEG-NIRS classification did not outperform EEG-exclusive classification, combined classification does show modest gains in 2 participants when using all the NIRS data but constraining the EEG data to only a single oddball. In conclusion, NIRS offers limited benefits in terms of classification in a prolonged auditory task paradigm, but future research should focus on optimizing task duration for EEG and NIRS classification.

Recent advances in cognitive neuroscience and brain imaging technologies have started to turn these myths into a reality, and are providing us with the ability to interface directly with the human brain. This ability is made possible through the use of sensors that monitor physical processes within the brain which correspond with certain forms of thought. Brain-Computer Interfaces: Applying our Minds to Human-Computer Interaction broadly surveys research in the Brain-Computer Interface domain. More specifically, each chapter articulates some of the challenges and opportunities for using brain sensing in Human-Computer Interaction work, as well as applying Human-Computer Interaction solutions to brain sensing work.
