Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problems encountered in the development of largevolume superconducting solenoids have been investigated in the light of the experience induced by the realization of a particular prototype (8.0 inches in diameter, 4 ft long, 20 kilogauss at room temperature). The current-field characteristics of some useful superconducting materials (Nb, Mo-Re, Nb-Zr) have been measured; the results are discussed in terms of recent theories of superconductors. The spurious loss of the resistanceless state of a superconducting solenoid, which is particularly dangerous for large-volume devices, because of the large magnetic energy involved, was thoroughly investigated. Starting from the steady-state mechanisms of the quenching propagation in wire, the equations for current decay, voltage surge, wire-temperature rise, and energy transfer are derived; results of calculations for the prototype solenoid are presented. The design of the prototype solenoid, which can be divided somewhat arbitrarily into the magnetic-field generating system and the cryogenic system, is thoroughly detailed. The most important topics covered are: field calculation for multicoil solenoids (a machine program to calculate the field on- and off-axis is presented); magnetic stresses and magnetic energy; quenching process for multicoil solenoids; steady-state heat transfer caused by residual gas, thermal radiation and conduction (a derivation of the conduction loss with counterflow gas cooling is presented); and transient heat transfer, particularly during cooling down and quenching. Preliminary results are discussed, and suggestions for an improved design are made. (Author).

Download or read book Handbook of Applied Superconductivity, Volume 2 written by B Seeber and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Applied Superconductivity, Two-Volume Set covers all important aspects of applied superconductivity and the supporting low-temperature technologies. The handbook clearly demonstrates the capabilities of superconducting technologies and illustrates how to implement these technologies in new areas of academic and industrial research and development. Volume One provides an introduction to the theoretical background of both low and high Tc superconductivity, followed by details of the basic hardware such as wires, tapes, and cables used in applications of superconductivity and the necessary supporting science and technology. Theoretical discussions are in most cases followed by examples of real designs, fabrication techniques, and practical instrumentation guidance. A final chapter examines materials properties at low temperatures. Volume Two provides examples of current and future applications of superconductivity. It covers medical systems for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), high field magnets for research, superconducting magnets for accelerators, industrial systems for magnetic separation, and transportation systems. The final chapters look to future applications in power and superconducting electronics. With fully referenced, peer-refereed contributions from experts in various fields, this two-volume work is an essential reference for a wide range of scientists and engineers in academic and industrial research and development environments.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the years the aim of the International Conference on Magnet Technology has been the exchange of information on the design, construction and operation of magnets for a variety of applications, such as high energy physics, fusion, electrical machinery and others. The aim has included advances in materials for magnet conductors, insulators and supporting structures. Since its inception the focus of the International Conference on Magnet Technology has gradually shifted to superconducting magnets. Now almost all papers are related to superconductivity. The 11th International Conference on Magnet Technology (MT-11) was organized by the combined efforts of the Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan, the Association for Promotion of Electrical, Electronic and Information Engineering, and the Tokyo Section of the IEEE. The Conference was held at the Tsukuba University Hall, Tsukuba, Japan, from 28 August to 1 September 1989, courtesy ofthe University ofTsukuba. The Tsukuba University Hall was large enough to host invited talks, parallel sessions, poster sessions and industrial exhibitions. 461 participants from 19 countries registered for MT-ll, and 280 invited and contributed papers were presented. The papers were reviewed not only by the Program Committee but also by foreign participants. Working sessions and social events were characterized by a truly international atmo sphere. Scientific as well as cultural excursions were organized so that foreign visitors could experience the spirit of modern Japan. 26 companies, of which 8 were from Western countries, participated in the industrial exhibition which featured diverse products and services of interest to the magnet community.
