Book Synopsis Long and Deep Tunnels by : Vittorio Guglielmetti
Download or read book Long and Deep Tunnels written by Vittorio Guglielmetti and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 1336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design and construction of “long and deep” tunnels, i.e. tunnels under mountains, characterised by either considerable length and/or overburden, represent a considerable challenge. The scope of this book is not to instruct how to design and construct such tunnels but to share a method to identify the potential hazards related to the process of designing and constructing long and deep tunnels, to produce a relevant comprehensive analysis and listing, to quantify the probability and consequences, and to design proper mitigation measures and countermeasures. The design, developed using probabilistic methods, is verified during execution by means of the so called Plan for Advance of the Tunnel (PAT) method, which allows adapting the design and control parameters of the future stretches of the tunnel to the results of the stretches already finished, using the monitoring data base. Numerous criteria are given to identify the key parameters, necessary for the PAT procedure. Best practices of excavation management with the help of real time monitoring and control are also provided. Furthermore cost and time evaluation systems are analysed. Finally, contractual aspects related to construction by contract are investigated, for best development and application of models more appropriate for tunnelling-construction contracts. The work will be of interest to practising engineers, designers, consultants and students in mining, underground, tunnelling, transportation and construction engineering, as well as to foundation and geological engineers, urban planners/developers and architects.

Download or read book The Science, Technology and Application of Titanium written by R. I. Jaffee and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 1225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Science, Technology and Application of Titanium contains the proceedings of an International Conference organized by the Institute of Metals, The Metallurgical Society of AIME, and the American Society for Metals in association with the Japan Institute of Metals and the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and held at the Royal Festival Hall in London, on May 21-24, 1968. The papers explore scientific and technological developments as well as applications of titanium and cover topics ranging from processing of titanium to its chemical and environmental behavior, physics, thermodynamics, and kinetics. Deformation and fracture, phase transformations and heat treatment, and alloying are also discussed. This book is comprised of 114 chapters and begins with an overview of the titanium industry in Europe and the United States. The reader is then introduced to primary and secondary fabrication of titanium; corrosion and oxidation; physical properties of titanium alloys; interaction of titanium with elements of the periodic system; and elastic interactions between dislocations and twin and grain boundaries in titanium. The crystallography of deformation twinning in titanium is also examined, along with superplasticity and transformation plasticity in titanium. The remaining chapters focus on interstitial strengthening of titanium alloys; mechanism of martensitic transformation in titanium and its alloys; phase relationships in titanium-oxygen alloys; strengthening of titanium alloys by shock deformation; and titanium hot forming. This monograph will be of interest to chemists and metallurgists.

Book Synopsis Adaptive Antennas and Receivers by : Melvin M. Weiner
Download or read book Adaptive Antennas and Receivers written by Melvin M. Weiner and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 1240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our modern age of remote sensing, wireless communication, and the nearly endless list of other antenna-based applications, complex problems require increasingly sophisticated solutions. Conventional antenna systems are no longer suited to high-noise or low-signal applications such as intrusion detection. Detailing highly effective approaches to non-Gaussian weak signal detection, Adaptive Antennas and Receivers provides an authoritative introduction to state-of-the-art research on the modeling, testing, and application of these technologies. Edited by innovative researcher and eminent expert Melvin M. Weiner, this book is the first to integrate three advanced approaches to non-Gaussian weak signal detection into a single reference: homogeneous partitioning of the surveillance volume, adaptive antennas, and adaptive receivers. Comprising self-contained chapters contributed by renowned experts such as Donald D. Weiner and Ronald Fante, each chapter explores the techniques, theoretical basis, and applications of the approach under discussion. The book considers signal detection in the presence of external noise such as clutter residue, interference, atmospheric noise, jammers, external thermal noise, in vivo surrounding tissue, and camouflaging material, making it ideal for use across a broad spectrum of applications. This authoritative reference supplies more than 750 figures and tables, 1460 equations, and 640 references. Adaptive Antennas and Receivers is an ideal resource for improving performance in surveillance, communication, navigation, artificial intelligence, computer tomography, neuroscience, and intrusion detection systems, to name only a few.

Book Synopsis Econometrics: Alchemy or Science? by : David F. Hendry
Download or read book Econometrics: Alchemy or Science? written by David F. Hendry and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2000-10-26 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Econometrics: Alchemy or Science?" analyses the effectiveness and validity of applying econometric methods to economic time series. The methodological dispute is long-standing, and no claim can be made for a single valid method, but recent results on the theory and practice of model selection bid fair to resolve many of the contentious issues. The book presents criticisms and evaluations of competing approaches, based on theoretical economic and econometric analyses, empirical applications, and Monte Carlo simulations, which interact to determine best practice. It explains the evolution of an approach to econometric modelling founded in careful statistical analyses of the available data, using economic theory to guide the general model specification. From a strong foundation in the theory of reduction, via a range of applied and simulation studies, it demonstrates that general-to-specific procedures have excellent properties. The book is divided into four Parts: Routes and Route Maps; Empirical Modelling Strategies; Formalization; and Retrospect and Prospect. A short preamble to each chapter sketches the salient themes, links to earlier and later developments, and the lessons learnt or missed at the time. A sequence of detailed empirical studies of consumers' expenditure and money demand illustrate most facets of the approach. Material new to this revised edition describes recent major advances in computer-automated model selection, embodied in the powerful new software program PcGets, which establish the operational success of the modelling strategy.
Download or read book Gravel Roads written by Ken Skorseth and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.
Book Synopsis Conditional Specification of Statistical Models by : Barry C. Arnold
Download or read book Conditional Specification of Statistical Models written by Barry C. Arnold and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-06-02 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efforts to visualize multivariate densities necessarily involve the use of cross-sections, or, equivalently, conditional densities. This book focuses on distributions that are completely specified in terms of conditional densities. They are appropriately used in any modeling situation where conditional information is completely or partially available. All statistical researchers seeking more flexible models than those provided by classical models will find conditionally specified distributions of interest.
