Book Synopsis WHO Handbook on Indoor Radon by : World Health Organization
Download or read book WHO Handbook on Indoor Radon written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2009 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook focuses on residential radon exposure from a public health point of view and provides detailed recommendations on reducing health risks from radon and sound policy options for preventing and mitigating radon exposure. The material in the handbook reflects the epidemiological evidence that indoor radon exposure is responsible for a substantial number of lung cancers in the general population. Information is provided on the selection of devices to measure radon levels and on procedures for the reliable measurement of these levels. Discussed also are control options for radon in new dwellings, radon reduction in existing dwellings as well as assessment of the costs and benefits of different radon prevention and remedial actions. Also covered are radon risk communication strategies and organization of national radon programs.--Publisher's description.

Book Synopsis Developments in Geophysical Exploration Methods—4 by : A.A. Fitch
Download or read book Developments in Geophysical Exploration Methods—4 written by A.A. Fitch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geophysical prospecting is an applied science and the range of scientific principles to be applied is very wide. In this collection of original papers, the application of many different principles is described in the search for sulphides, other metallic ores and radioactive deposits. The papers are all concerned with surface observations and cover both the theory and the practice of the methods used. In all cases the advan tages and disadvantages of the methods are described and their role in the detection of mineral deposits is discussed and placed in context. Electromagnetic methods are covered in detail, involving the use of both electric and magnetic field effects. Techniques are described involv ing observations both at a number of discrete frequencies and with continuously changing frequency. In spite of the diversity of method it is interesting to note the strong links between the papers; two chapters, for example, start from the same fundamental illustration, first published by Won, of the basic relationship between source frequency, ground con ductivity and depth of penetration. The all-important economic aspects are not forgotten and the first chapter assesses the statistics of performance and describes their use in the shaping and management of an exploration programme. The editor takes this opportunity to thank the busy men who have set aside time to write these contributions.

Download or read book Topical Workshop on Low Radioactivity Techniques written by Pia Loaiza and published by AIP Conference Proceedings / A. This book was released on 2007-04-13 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main purpose of the 2nd Topical Workshop on Low Radioactivity Techniques was to share the knowledge on techniques and developments aimed at ultra-low level backgrounds. Extremely low backgrounds are needed for searches looking for rare events such as dark matter or solar neutrinos. The articles gathered in this proceeding are unique since they provide technical details on low radioactivity techniques developments.

Book Synopsis Radon: A Tracer for Geological, Geophysical and Geochemical Studies by : Mark Baskaran
Download or read book Radon: A Tracer for Geological, Geophysical and Geochemical Studies written by Mark Baskaran and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-11 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews all the major research accomplishments and summarizes the different applications of radon. It serves as a solid reference book for researchers who are interested in the U-series radionuclides and noble gases as tracers and chronometers. Radon has been widely utilized as a powerful tracer to quantify a number of processes that include gas exchange rates between air and water, submarine groundwater discharge in coastal waters, water exchange between rivers and lakes, ocean circulation, hydrocarbon and uranium exploration. It is also used as an atmospheric tracer for the identification and quantification of air masses and as a tool for earthquake prediction, etc. A significant portion of the book presents state-of-the knowledge on indoor-radon-related health issues. Applications of the decay-series of Rn-222 are presented in a chapter. It serves as a reference and a state-of-the-art resource for researchers who want to learn the different applications of radon in Earth systems.
Book Synopsis Radon, Health and Natural Hazards by : G.K. Gillmore
Download or read book Radon, Health and Natural Hazards written by G.K. Gillmore and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume draws together the final outputs of the five-year UNESCO/IUGS/IGCP Project 571 and presents new data on radon in the built and natural environments, radon as a diagnostic tool of geophysical phenomena, reflections and recommendations on the future of radon research and a critique of radon's asserted use as a therapy. By considering all the aspects of radon as a health hazard and potential indicator of natural hazards, the project brought together the dispersed research (from universities, governmental and non-governmental bodies as well as commercial companies) on radon within an interdisciplinary context to facilitate scientific advancement and understanding. Through the establishment of working groups at regional and local levels and the development of research networks, a variety of international meetings were organized and a number of journal special issues published to disseminate the results. The scale of the project was global: scientists from over 20 European countries, plus countries in the Americas, Asia and the Middle East have been participants of the project. This volume results from UNESCO/IUGS/IGCP Project 571 `Radon, Health and Natural Hazards'. Radon has significant socio-economic relevance in the developed and developing worlds, primarily in terms of the indoor radon hazard but also certain geohazards. This volume presents a broad range of papers including methodological, technological and interpretative aspects, as well as case-study material. This volume results from UNESCO/IUGS/IGCP Project 571 `Radon, Health and Natural Hazards'. This volume presents a broad range of papers including methodological, technological and interpretative aspects, as well as case-study material.
