Book excerpt: The objective of the program was to develop a metastable beta titanium sheet alloy which could be formed by standard sheet metal shop equipment and then reliably heat treated to a high strength level. It is anticipated that such an alloy will reduce initial manufacturing costs by eliminating costly hot-forming operations and by allowing greater field repair capability. Such an alloy composition was developed. It, however, did not exhibit the desired high cold formability and was not heat treatable to a high strength level with usable ductility and toughness. An alloy of a composition that resulted in cold deformation by slip exhibited a better balance of cold formability and mechanical properties after heat treatment. The alloy was Ti-3Al-15V-3Cr-3Sn. A secondary objective was the study of compositional effects as related to solutionizing cycle, cooling rate, deformation mode and heat treat response. Nineteen alloy compositions were investigated. Book excerpt: A survey of the airframe industry was made to determine the state of art of forming titanium sheet. thirteen major forming methods evolved from information obtained by personal visit and discussion and through answers to questionnaires submitted to the airframe industry. Approximately 20 airframe producers were visited and their forming methods observed and discussed. In addition, some 300 questionnaires, designed on the basis of the information obtained during visits to airframe manufacturers, were submitted to companies directly engaged in forming titanium sheet metal shapes. Also, the literature collected by the Titanium Metallurgical Laboratory information center was reviewed and extracted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this program was to develop an economical sheet titanium alloy. The approach was to build on the earlier work with emphasis on mill product economics consistent with formability, fabricability, and other properties required by the ultimate user. Including alloys from the earlier contracts, more than 60 compositions were evaluated. These were narrowed to three final compositions, Ti-8V-7Cr-3Al-4Sn-1Zr, Ti-8V-4Cr-2Mo-2Fe-3Al, and Ti-15V-3Cr-3Al-3Sn. Further work is recommended on all three. Each alloy exhibits good strip producibility potential while meeting the airframe industries' stated cold minimum bend requirements. Each alloy showed Erichsen cup draw depths exceeding 0.35 in. after simulated strip processing to about .040 in. gage. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report represents a portion of the information contained in the March, 1967, revised edition of the 'Aircraft Designer's Handbook for Titanium and Titanium Alloys' which was prepared by the Defense Metals Information Center under the joint sponsorship of the U.S. Air Force Research and Technology Division, and the Federal Aviation Agency. The important techniques discussed include; (1) brake forming, (2) stretch forming, (3) deep drawing, (4) trapped-rubber forming, (5) tube bulging, (6) bending, (7) drop-hammer forming, (8) roll forming, (9) roll bending, (10) spinning, (11) shear forming, (12) dimpling, (13) joggling, and (14) hot sizing. Auxiliary metalworking operations, preparation for forming, blank heating methods, lubricants for forming and tooling materials are discussed. Other data available in the open literature have been summarized and referenced to present a comprehensive picture on the state of the art of these fabrication methods as related to titanium and its alloys. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new ?-rich ? + ? titanium alloy, SP-700, was designed to improve hot workability and mechanical properties over Ti-6A1-4V alloy. The chemical composition of the alloy is Ti-4.5A1-3V-2Mo-2Fe, and particularly enhanced properties include superplasticity, hardenability, and fatigue strength. Owing to its extremely fine microstructure and low ?-transus temperature, SP-700 is superplastically formable at temperatures below 1073 K without significant increase in flow stress. More advantageously, diffusion bonding is also accomplished around this temperature. The low temperature SPF/DB process not only saves die material life and process costs, but also reduces alloy degradation from exposure at elevated temperatures, e.g., grain growth and oxidation. Isothermal and conventional hot forging are also performed better with SP-700 than ordinary titanium alloys like Ti6A1-4V.
