Book excerpt: We used a simulated concrete pore water solution to evaluate the corrosion protection performance of concrete corrosion-inhibiting admixtures and epoxy-coated reinforcing bars (ECR). We evaluated three commercial corrosion inhibitors, ECR from three coaters removed from job sites, one ECR shipped directly from the coater's plant, and one ECR removed from a job site plus a corrosion inhibitor. The corrosion inhibitors were calcium nitrite, an aqueous mixture of esters and amines, and a mixture of alcohol and amine. Corrosion protection performance was based on the amount of visually observed corroded surface area. For bare steel tested with and without corrosion inhibitors, corrosion increased with increasing chloride concentration, and specimens saturated with oxygen were more corroded than specimens saturated with breathing air. The amount of corrosion over the 90-day test period was controlled by the amount of oxygen in solution at the higher chloride concentrations. The ester-amine and alcohol-amine did not inhibit corrosion. Calcium nitrite inhibited corrosion at all levels of chloride concentration. For ECR, corrosion occurred both at sites where the coating was damaged and underneath the coating. Coating debondment was greatest in pore water solutions containing chloride. The least coating debondment and corrosion occurred in the solution containing calcium nitrite and the ECR shipped directly from the manufacturer. Coating debondment and corrosion of ECR are directly related to the amount of damage as holes; mashed, dented, and cracked areas; and holidays. The researchers recommend that the developed test method be adopted as a standard test for concrete corrosion inhibitors and that calcium nitrite remain the only concrete corrosion inhibitor approved for use in Virginia.

This technology, in conjunction with impressed current cathodic protection, can be used to prevent corrosion of the embedded reinforcing steel in concrete girders, piers, columns, and beams. A formulation of an electrically conductive polymer concrete, which holds the conductive filler in suspension and can be sprayed in thin uniform coatings, was developed. This coating is permeable, yet has low electrical resistivity, (less than 10 ohm-cm) good bond strength to concrete substrates, and good weatherability. The commercially available spray equipment can be used to spray mixtures containing up to 60 wt per cent calcined coke breeze and 40 wt per cent resin on vertical or overhead surfaces.

Book excerpt: "Originally developed to enhance the bond between concrete and steel, reactive enamel coatings have shown great promise in protecting steel from corrosive environments. However, the corrosion resistance of the material has not yet been tested beyond 40 days. Moreover, when the material was tested, it was applied to smooth steel pins, not deformed steel bars which are commonly used in reinforced concrete structures. Therefore, this study focused on the corrosion resistance of three different enamel coatings, along with a standard epoxy coating, each of which were applied to both smooth and deformed steel bars and included both short-term and long-term test methods. The three enamel coatings tested within this study were: reactive enamel, pure enamel, and double enamel. The reactive enamel was obtained by combining pure enamel with calcium silicate (cement) at a 1-to-1 ratio by weight. The double enamel was composed of an inner layer of pure enamel and an outer layer of reactive enamel. Each coating was subjected to a modified ASTM B117 salt spray test and a potentiostatic polarization test that followed the Accelerated Corrosion Test (ACT) Method. In addition to these two tests, the corrosion resistance of the reactive enamel coating was also evaluated through a modified AASHTO T-259 ponding test, which included periodic resistivity and half-cell measurements. Results obtained from the tests revealed that the pure and double enamel coatings provided a superior amount of protection when compared to the 50/50 enamel coating. However, the overall performance of the pure and double enamel coatings was limited by the manufacturing process, which resulted in significant variations in coating thickness"--Abstract, leaf iii

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers a broad range of materials science that has been brought to bear on providing solutions to the challenges of developing self-healing and protective coatings for a range of metals. The book has a strong emphasis on characterisation techniques, particularly new techniques that are beginning to be used in the coatings area. It features many contributions written by experts from various industrial sectors which examine the needs of the sectors and the state of the art. The development of self-healing and protective coatings has been an expanding field in recent years and applies a lot of new knowledge gained from other fields as well as other areas of materials science to the development of coatings. It has borrowed from fields such as the food and pharmaceutical industries who have used, polymer techniques, sol-gel science and colloidosome technology for a range encapsulation techniques. It has also borrowed from fields like hydrogen storage such as from the development of hierarchical and other materials based on organic templating as “nanocontainers” for the delivery of inhibitors. In materials science, recent developments in high throughput and other characterisation techniques, such as those available from synchrotrons, are being increasing used for novel characterisation – one only needs to look at the application of these techniques in self healing polymers to gauge wealth of new information that has been gained from these techniques. This work is largely driven by the need to replace environmental pollutants and hazardous chemicals that represent risk to humans such as chromate inhibitors which are still used in some applications.

Book excerpt: Over the past 25 years coatings technologies have been influenced by the need to lower volatile organic contents (VOC) in order to comply with stricter environmental regulations as well as to reduce the use of costly petroleum based solvents. During this time the use of waterborne coatings in the architectural, industrial maintenance and original equipment manufacturing (OEM) sectors has continued to grow replacing solvent based coatings while meeting the ever decreasing VOC targets. In addition to waterborne coatings, other alternative technologies in the industrial and OEM sectors include powder coatings, uv-curable coatings and high solids coatings have had significant growth. Traditionally these coatings had the primary functions of protecting and decorating substrates. More recently, there has been growth in Research and Development and commercial product generation of coatings which have novel functions and sense and interact with their environment in addition to having the traditional protection and decoration functions. These coatings are often referred to as Smart Coatings. These types of coatings generally provide significant added value. Smart Coatings can be achieved in many ways such as by addition of additives and strategically designing polymer structures and coatings morphologies.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is often considered to be a journey. The lifecycle of waste can similarly be considered to be a journey from the cradle (when an item becomes valueless and, usually, is placed in the dustbin) to the grave (when value is restored by creating usable material or energy; or the waste is transformed into emissions to water or air, or into inert material placed in a landfill). This preface provides a route map for the journey the reader of this book will undertake. Who? Who are the intended readers of this book? Waste managers (whether in public service or private companies) will find a holistic approach for improving the environmental quality and the economic cost of managing waste. The book contains general principles based on cutting edge experience being developed across Europe. Detailed data and a computer model will enable operations managers to develop data-based improvements to their systems. Producers oj waste will be better able to understand how their actions can influence the operation of environmentally improved waste management systems. Designers oj products and packages will be better able to understand how their design criteria can improve the compatibility of their product or package with developing, environmentally improved waste management systems. Waste data specialists (whether in laboratories, consultancies or environ mental managers of waste facilities) will see how the scope, quantity and quality of their data can be improved to help their colleagues design more effective waste management systems.
