This book was released on 1976 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research project was to develop a radar technique to detect the presence of flying birds potentially hazardous to aircraft near airport runways; to distinguish them from other radar targets; to estimate the size and number of birds in order to assess the hazard. The motions of a bird in flight are characterized by a distinctive velocity spectrum that can be detected by radar. These 'aural signatures' were identified by Doppler technique and verified by visual sightings. This report provides a description of the analysis techniques, compares range-gated to nonrange-gated systems and also conventional and Doppler radars. A discussion concerning modification of a typical system to a Doppler system is included. A method of determining the actual number of birds in the target volume is discussed. The report also includes a scene-by-scene description of a film presentation made to more fully quantify the Doppler technique. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonel Kwiatkowski details air operations challenges in Africa, and she discusses how the USAF currently meets or avoids these challenges. She contends that Africa is like the "western frontier" of America's history-undeveloped, brimming with opportunity as well as danger, and that it is a place where standard assumptions often do not apply. A portion of Colonel Kwiatkowski's study is dedicated to illustrating how USAF air transport is really done in Africa on a daily basis. She recommends ways to improve our ability to conduct expeditionary air operations on the continent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scattering, Natural Surfaces, and Fractals provides a comprehensive overview of electromagnetic scattering from natural surfaces, ranging from the classical to the more recent (fractal) approach. As remote sensing applications become increasingly important, this text provides readers with a solid background in interpretation, classification and thematization of microwave images. The "scattering problem is discussed in detail with emphasis on its application to electromagnetic wave propagation, remote sensing, radar detection, and electromagnetic diagnostics. Natural surface and fractals complete this treatise focusing on how the fractal model represents our natural environment and other planets in our solar system, most recently as used to research the planet Venus and Titan, one of the moons of Saturn. An example of how scattering, fractals, and natural surfaces are of great importance is the following: Natural oil slicks in the ocean have been found to be fractal while man-made ones (generated by illegal washing of oil carrying ships) are not. Processing of an ocean image from space may detect the latter by means of a fractal analysis. - An elegant and clear treatment of a rigorous topic with informative prose and realistic illustrations of scattering - Provides readers with a solid background in interpretation, classification, and thematization of microwave images - The only book available on fractal models and their application to scattering

The impetus for writing this book springs from two sources- the increased use of nonmetallic materials in the structure of aircraft and the constant trend toward using electronic equipment to handle flight-critical control and navigation function.

Book excerpt: Although the field of sparse representations is relatively new, research activities in academic and industrial research labs are already producing encouraging results. The sparse signal or parameter model motivated several researchers and practitioners to explore high complexity/wide bandwidth applications such as Digital TV, MRI processing, and certain defense applications. The potential signal processing advancements in this area may influence radar technologies. This book presents the basic mathematical concepts along with a number of useful MATLAB® examples to emphasize the practical implementations both inside and outside the radar field. Landmark events are highlighted and fascinating insights provided into the exceptional people who made possible the progress in the field, including the scientists and technologists who worked independently and under strict secrecy in various countries across the world in the 1930s and the big businessmen who played an important role after World War II. The book encourages multiple levels of reading. The author is a leading radar researcher who is ideally placed to offer a technical/scientific perspective as well as a historical one. He has taken care to structure and write the book in such a way as to appeal to both non-specialists and experts. The book is not sponsored by any company or body, either formally or informally, and is therefore entirely unbiased. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the vital importance of the emerging area of biotechnology and its role in defense planning and policymaking, no definitive book has been written on the topic for the defense policymaker, the military student, and the private-sector bioscientist interested in the "emerging opportunities market" of national security. This edited volume is intended to help close this gap and provide the necessary backdrop for thinking strategically about biology in defense planning and policymaking. This volume is about applications of the biological sciences, here called "biologically inspired innovations," to the military. Rather than treating biology as a series of threats to be dealt with, such innovations generally approach the biological sciences as a set of opportunities for the military to gain strategic advantage over adversaries. These opportunities range from looking at everything from genes to brains, from enhancing human performance to creating renewable energy, from sensing the environment around us to harnessing its power.
