Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical solution algorithm based on finite volume method is developed for unsteady, two-dimensional, depth-averaged shallow water flow equations. The model is verified using test cases from the literature and free surface data obtained from measurements in a laboratory flume. Experiments are carried out in a horizontal, rectangular channel with vertical solid boxes attached on the sidewalls to obtain freesurface data set in flows where three-dimensionality is significant. Experimental data contain both subcritical and supercritical states. The shallow water equations are solved on a structured, rectangular grid system. Godunov type solution procedure evaluates the interface fluxes using an upwind method with an exact Riemann solver. The numerical solution reproduces analytical solutions for the test cases successfully. Comparison of the numerical results with the experimental two-dimensional free surface data is used to illustrate the limitations of the shallow water equations and improvements necessary for better simulation of such cases.

Book Synopsis Computational Challenges in the Geosciences by : Clint Dawson
Download or read book Computational Challenges in the Geosciences written by Clint Dawson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational Challenges in the Geosciences addresses a cross-section of grand challenge problems arising in geoscience applications, including groundwater and petroleum reservoir simulation, hurricane storm surge, oceanography, volcanic eruptions and landslides, and tsunamis. Each of these applications gives rise to complex physical and mathematical models spanning multiple space-time scales, which can only be studied through computer simulation. The data required by the models is often highly uncertain, and the numerical solution of the models requires sophisticated algorithms which are mathematically accurate, computationally efficient and yet must preserve basic physical properties of the models. This volume summarizes current methodologies and future research challenges in this broad and important field.

Download or read book Advances in Spatio-Temporal Analysis written by Xinming Tang and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2007-08-23 with total page 2385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developments in Geographic Information Technology have raised the expectations of users. A static map is no longer enough; there is now demand for a dynamic representation. Time is of great importance when operating on real world geographical phenomena, especially when these are dynamic. Researchers in the field of Temporal Geographical Information Systems (TGIS) have been developing methods of incorporating time into geographical information systems. Spatio-temporal analysis embodies spatial modelling, spatio-temporal modelling and spatial reasoning and data mining. Advances in Spatio-Temporal Analysis contributes to the field of spatio-temporal analysis, presenting innovative ideas and examples that reflect current progress and achievements.

This book was released on 2000-03-02 with total page 1039 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Twenty-Second Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics was held in Washington, D.C., from August 9-14, 1998. It coincided with the 100th anniversary of the David Taylor Model Basin. This international symposium was organized jointly by the Office of Naval Research (Mechanics and Energy Conversion S&T Division), the National Research Council (Naval Studies Board), and the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (David Taylor Model Basin). This biennial symposium promotes the technical exchange of naval research developments of common interest to all the countries of the world. The forum encourages both formal and informal discussion of the presented papers, and the occasion provides an opportunity for direct communication between international peers.

Book Synopsis The Finite Volume Method in Computational Fluid Dynamics by : F. Moukalled
Download or read book The Finite Volume Method in Computational Fluid Dynamics written by F. Moukalled and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-08-13 with total page 799 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook explores both the theoretical foundation of the Finite Volume Method (FVM) and its applications in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Readers will discover a thorough explanation of the FVM numerics and algorithms used for the simulation of incompressible and compressible fluid flows, along with a detailed examination of the components needed for the development of a collocated unstructured pressure-based CFD solver. Two particular CFD codes are explored. The first is uFVM, a three-dimensional unstructured pressure-based finite volume academic CFD code, implemented within Matlab. The second is OpenFOAM®, an open source framework used in the development of a range of CFD programs for the simulation of industrial scale flow problems. With over 220 figures, numerous examples and more than one hundred exercise on FVM numerics, programming, and applications, this textbook is suitable for use in an introductory course on the FVM, in an advanced course on numerics, and as a reference for CFD programmers and researchers.
