Book excerpt: Following the Model-Based-Design (MBD) development process used presently by the automotive industry, the control systems for a new Series-Parallel Multiple-Regime Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), UVic EcoCAR2, have been developed, implemented and tested. Concurrent simulation platforms were used to achieve different developmental goals, with a simplified system power loss model serving as the low-overhead control strategy optimization platform, and a high fidelity Software-in-Loop (SIL) model serving as the vehicle control development and testing platform. These two platforms were used to develop a strategy-independent controls development tool which will allow deployment of new strategies for the vehicle irrespective of energy management strategy particulars. A rule-based energy management strategy was applied and calibrated using genetic algorithm (GA) optimization. The concurrent modeling approach was validated by comparing the vehicle equivalent fuel consumption between the simplified and SIL models. An equivalency factor (EF) of 1 was used in accounting for battery state of charge (SOC) discrepancies at cycle end. A recursively-defined subsystem efficiency-based EF was also applied to try to capture real-world equivalency impacts.

The research explored the common and distinct characteristics of hybrid electric propulsion system technology for different vehicular applications, and formed the foundation for further research and development.

Book excerpt: Plug-In hybrid electric automobiles show great promise for shifting the United States transportation sector away from petroleum dependence and towards energy sustainability through renewable electricity and bio fuels. The Trinity study at UC Davis was designed to develop and demonstrate the technology required for widespread adoption of plug in hybrid electric vehicles. This thesis presents the vehicle system architecture and the controls development methodologies implemented in the Trinity system. The Trinity system was implemented into a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox. The powertrain system consists of a pre-transmission parallel hybrid architecture with a large enough battery pack and powerful electric motors to propel the vehicle through normal driving over extended distances. The large battery and electric drive system enables the driver to avoid consuming liquid fuel for daily driving by replacing it with electricity, while allowing the flexibility to have unlimited driving range whenever liquid fuel is available. The performance of the vehicle was measured to have a 29.3 mile all electric range over the UDDS driving cycle and real world charge sustaining fuel economy of 29.1 city and 34.0 highway miles per gallon. The weight of the test vehicle was 5081 pounds with occupants and data acquisition equipment. The conventional Equinox curb weight is 3660 pounds. Despite the weight increase, the modified vehicle shows significantly improved fuel economy in the charge sustaining mode. Additionally, the modified Equinox has an electric driving range of 30 miles. This feature would allow over half of US drivers to avoid using gasoline for daily commuting. In mass production, this type of vehicle has the potential to displace a large percentage of the liquid fuel used for transportation.

The Ohio State University designed a parallel hybrid electric vehicle with a 0 to 60 mph acceleration goal of 5.6 seconds and a 44 mile all electric range. Before the performance and emissions goals can be met the team must fully mechanically and electrically integrate their hybrid vehicle architecture. Concurrently to the vehicle integration, the controls team developed the basic vehicle controls that would be required to meet the goals for the second year of the competition. The controls development started with fully defining the vehicle controls requirements and then evaluating which requirements would be met in each part of the development process. The controls validation occurred using a team-developed vehicle model in both the Software- and Hardware-in-the-Loop environments. The main focus for this part of the development was defining and implementing the basic controls, such as controller communication and vehicle startup, which are critical to eventually having a fully functional vehicle. With the Year 2 controls validated in the HIL environment, a vehicle implementation plan was developed to be implemented and validated by May of 2016. The full controls development plan that was developed to meet the high level team goals included both performance and efficiency modes that will be implemented and validated in Year 3 and 4 of the EcoCAR 3 project.

Although this system can be implemented on any automobile with a similar architecture, eAWD is developed specifically for the Ohio State University ChallengeX vehicle. The reconfigured Chevrolet Equinox utilizes a 1.9L Diesel engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, and Belted-Alternator Starter (BAS) to power the front wheels while a larger electric machine drives the rear wheels. A 300V NiMH battery pack acts as the energy storage device for the electrical components. Without a drive shaft coupling the front and rear axle, the only connection between the front and rear wheels is the road -- through-the- road. This provides a significant amount of flexibility with regards to propulsion of the vehicle in the most efficient manner. Additionally, such a complex architecture presents a unique problem when considering the implementation of traction control. The stock Equinox uses a viscous coupling to transmit a certain percentage of torque to the rear wheels when traction is compromised. The hybrid Equinox accomplishes this same task electrically. Initially, a model-based design approach is utilized to develop the eAWD algorithm. Based off of simulators previously developed by the author and The Ohio State University ChallengeX team, cX-TRAC incorporates detailed tire dynamics, as well as the dynamics of the powertrain actuators and vehicle. The result is a fairly complete, but complex simulation tool that requires additional refinement for complete functionality in all modes. From the lessons learned while developing cX-TRAC, the eAWD algorithm is written and implemented on the OSU ChallengeX vehicle. A large variety of tests are conducted on the vehicle with eAWD enabled and disabled. These tests take place on a level basalt tile surface, as well as, a 20% grade with basalt and ceramic tile surfaces. A multitude of configurations are considered for the evaluation of eAWD. Vehicle launch using the engine and rear electric machine with the corresponding wheels on the basalt surface and all four wheels on the basalt surface are included in these configurations. Moreover, split-p testing is accomplished on both the level basalt surface and the inclined surface. Comparing the wheel speeds recorded during each of the tests with eAWD active, and inactive, shows the system developed and implemented herein provides a more than suitable replacement for the viscous coupling of the stock vehicle.

In this thesis, a method is presented for limiting wheel slip and targeting the ideal slip ratio for dry asphalt and low friction surfaces at every given time step. A launch control system is developed to further reduce wheel slip on initial acceleration from standstill furthering acceleration rates to sixty miles per hour. A MATLAB Simulink model was built of the powertrain as well as a six degree of freedom vehicle model that has been validated with real testing data from the car. This model was utilized to provide a reliable platform for optimizing control strategies without having to access the physical vehicle, thus reducing physical testing. A nine percent increase has been achieved by utilizing traction control and launch control for initial vehicle movement to sixty miles per hour.
