Book excerpt: Understanding the relationship between structure and function in the middle ear is important for addressing congenital and acquired conductive hearing loss. The most direct way to investigate this relationship is to experimentally manipulate the anatomy, then measure function. However, knowledge of normal anatomy has not been well-established for the developing ear in model animals. The goals of this work are twofold: to investigate the relationship between structure and function of the ligaments in the middle ear, and to establish normal anatomical development in the gerbil ear, capitalizing on advanced imaging. This study first focused on the anterior mallear and posterior incudal ligaments in the gerbil ear. The attachments were severed, and the change in sound transmission was quantified using air-conduction and bone-conduction thresholds. Ears were imaged, and the change of the resting position of the ossicles was qualitatively discussed. Subsequently, gerbil middle ears 0-21 days after birth were imaged using synchrotron-based microtomography. Development was described qualitatively, and the dimensions, interior structure, and positional relationships of the ossicles were quantified.
