Book excerpt: Preceptors are expected to facilitate students' learning and the transition of new graduate nurses in the clinical area but may not be fully prepared for the role. The literature abounds with evidence supportive of considerable preceptor development yet researchers have been slow to explore preceptors' perceptions of their capabilities and how they influence their willingness and behaviors. This qualitative descriptive study explores nurse preceptors' perceptions of their self-efficacy when precepting senior practicum students. Albert Bandura's self-efficacy theory guided this study. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight participants. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the data. Findings included two major themes, experiencing self-efficacy as a nurse preceptor and developing self-efficacy as a nurse preceptor. Previous preceptor experience, years of clinical practice experience, practicum experience as students and workplace supports were identified as salient sources of preceptor self-efficacy. Findings provided insight into the current state of self-efficacy in the preceptor role and contributed to addressing a gap in the literature. Findings have implications for strategies for development of self-efficacy and provided insight into other potential resources for supporting nurse preceptors in the development of their knowledge and behavior. The findings can inform the groundwork for research on further consideration for the implementation of structured transition programs in Canada.

Book excerpt: Nurses assume preceptor responsibilities in addition to usual nursing duties and most have minimal pedagogical preparation for the role. However, preceptors influence the competence of new staff through their instruction. The development of self-efficacy is vital to patient outcomes and safety. Using Bandura's (1997) framework of self-efficacy, ten proficient preceptors participated in an action research study that included individual interviews and focus groups related to the research question: What do proficient nurse preceptors report about the development of their preceptor self-efficacy for the purpose of recommending ongoing professional development and best practices within a hospital setting? Preceptors identified thirteen best practices for ongoing professional development within their hospital. These practices include areas of Instruction, Preceptor Support and Professionalism. The largest number of findings were within Instruction. Preceptors are the first teachers of new hires within hospitals. Effective instruction was predicated upon the existence of role support and inculcation of professionalism within the preceptor culture. Recommendations for practice include adoption of these best practices into ongoing professional development curricula. A monthly preceptor forum, to facilitate preceptor networking and sharing, is recommended. Future research might examine teaching strategies utilized by preceptors and the timing of these strategies when engaged in precepting. A comparative study using a self-efficacy tool for assessment could be conducted to ascertain whether the preceptor forum was building self-efficacy among the preceptors in comparison to another non-participating group of preceptors.

In Canadian baccalaureate nursing education, many schools pair their nursing students with a nurse preceptor to complete a consolidation placement in their final year of studies. The preceptor plays an important role in students' learning and their success in the program. Although there are many factors that may influence preceptors' ability to be successful in the role, the literature suggests that self-efficacy may affect their performance as a preceptors and may have an impact on students' learning and their preceptorship experience. Self-efficacy is defined as a person's confidence in their abilities to complete a task or goal. As such, preceptors with greater self-efficacy may be more effective in their role and may have a positive impact on students' learning. Therefore, it is important to assess factors that influence preceptors' self-efficacy as this knowledge could help inform and target the development of preceptor training programs, preceptor selection criteria and preceptor supports. Objectives. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the factors that affect the self-efficacy of preceptors. Five factors were investigated, including: (1) nursing experience, (2) preceptor experience, (3) vicarious preceptor experience, (4) preceptor training, and (5) the personality trait neuroticism. These variables are derived from Bandura's (1986) theory of self-efficacy. Design. This study was conducted using a cross-sectional, non-experimental study design. Methods. A total of 95 nurse preceptors participated in the study by completing an online survey and were recruited using multiple strategies, including social media. The survey was comprised of demographic questions, a measure of the Big-Five personality traits, and a measure of clinical teaching self-efficacy. Correlation, independent t-tests and ANOVAs were done to analyze the data. Results. Book excerpt: This report describes a preceptorship model that provides student nurses with clinical practice in rural health facilities. The development and implementation of a preceptorship model reflects a partnership between nursing education and nursing service--between the urban nursing school and the rural hospital. A five-stage preceptorship model is presented that includes development of guidelines, selection of participants, orientation of participants, implementation, and evaluation. The model draws on a literature review plus feedback from nurse preceptors and graduating nursing students. The model emphasizes the importance of clearly stated purposes and objectives; guidelines outlining the roles and responsibilities of the student, the preceptor, and the faculty liaison; and careful selection and preparation of all participants. In spring 1992, 24 students completed their senior practicums in rural hospitals using the preceptorship model; all were satisfied with the experience, met their clinical objectives, and completed their learning contracts. Evaluations of the model by the faculty liaison person, preceptors, and students resulted in 18 recommendations to improve implementation of the model. The strongest preceptor recommendation was that students and preceptors work identical hours with identical patient assignments. Contains 53 references. Appendices include preceptor questionnaire, terminal nursing competencies, agreement between nursing school and health care facility, form for assessing potential preceptors, and evaluation forms for students and preceptors.
