Book Synopsis The Coronavirus Crisis and Challenges to Social Development by : Maria do Carmo dos Santos Gonçalves
Download or read book The Coronavirus Crisis and Challenges to Social Development written by Maria do Carmo dos Santos Gonçalves and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-03 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a novel contribution to academic discourses on the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis and how it has impacted societies globally. It proffers an overview on the social development and political measures, from both the Global North and Global South, to prevent COVID-19's spread. It illuminates major social, political and economic challenges that already existed in different contexts and which are also currently being amplified by COVID-19. Curiously, this global pandemic has opened spaces for different actors, across the globe, to begin to fundamentally question and challenge the hegemony of the Global North, which sometimes is evident in social work. Linked to the foregoing and while reflecting beyond the pandemic and into the future, the book proposes that social work must become more political at all levels, and strive to transform societies, global social development efforts, and economic and health systems. This contributed volume of 38 chapters discusses and analyses ethical, social, sociological, social work and social development issues that complement and enrich available literature in the socio-political, economics, public health, medical ethics and political science. It provides various case studies which should enable readers to gain insights into how countries have responded to the pandemic and learn how COVID-19 negatively impacted countries in different parts of the world. This book also provides a platform for the articulation of neglected and marginalized voices, such as those of indigenous populations, the poor, or oppressed. The chapters are grouped according to three main themes as they relate to research on the COVID-19 pandemic and social work in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America: Analysis: Social Issues and the COVID-19 Pandemic Strategies and Responses in Social Work: Globally and Locally Outlook: Looking Ahead Beyond the Pandemic Intended to engage a global, diverse and interdisciplinary audience, The Coronavirus Crisis and Challenges to Social Development is a timely and relevant resource for academics, students and researchers in inter alia Social Work, Philosophy, Sociology, Economics, and Development Studies.

Book Synopsis Reimagining Nigeria's Educational System by : Joseph A. Balogun
Download or read book Reimagining Nigeria's Educational System written by Joseph A. Balogun and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-20 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the challenges within the Nigerian educational system and provides a concrete plan to revitalize the low-performing system by strengthening high-stakes testing at all levels. In Nigeria, many citizens believe that the solution to the country’s low performance in education is to eliminate high-stakes standardized testing. High-stakes testing refers to applying standardized student achievement tests as a primary mechanism to evaluate students, teachers, and their school’s performance. This book argues that the poor quality of education and low ranking of Nigeria’s educational system is not related to the negative consequences of high-stakes testing, but rather is due to many intrinsic factors. By conducting a comparative analysis of six high-performing education systems worldwide, the book offers a comparative summative evaluation of the educational system and offers recommendations. This book will be of interest to policymakers and scholars in the fields of African education, higher education, quality and global studies, African studies, management and administration, leadership, and professional development studies. Joseph Abiodun Balogun is former Dean and retired Distinguished University Professor at the College of Health Sciences, Chicago State University, USA, Visiting Professor/Program Consultant at the Centre of Excellence in Reproductive Health Innovation, University of Benin, Nigeria, and President/ CEO, Joseph Rehabilitation Center, Tinley Park, Illinois, USA.

Book Synopsis Enterprising Africa by : Stephen Dobson
Download or read book Enterprising Africa written by Stephen Dobson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-30 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enterprising Africa explores the future opportunities, challenges, growth areas and key themes that will shape entrepreneurship in the African continent over the next decade. Entrepreneurship can be the key to unlock resilient growth, but only if it is driven by both socially productive and growth-oriented new businesses. The book considers entrepreneurship as an enabler for socio-economic growth and development in Africa, especially in the context of youth unemployment and increasing youth population for which the traditional, and indeed emerging, industrial sectors will not be able to produce sufficient jobs to meet demand. Organised around three thematic parts, Part I covers the notion of inclusive growth and the role that entrepreneurs can play supporting this. Part II considers the dynamic between entrepreneurs and the environment since social, economic and environmental concerns need to build upon each other rather than vie for recognition. Finally, Part III offers chapters exploring policy contexts and the wider institutional ecosystems that need to be developed and enhanced to ensure a strong and vibrant environment for the future entrepreneurs of Africa to thrive. Edited and authored by leading experts in the field, this fascinating text will be of interest to academics as well as students of International, Transformational and Social Entrepreneurship, and International and African Business.

Book Synopsis Policy Development and Nigerian Education by : Amiel M. Fagbulu
Download or read book Policy Development and Nigerian Education written by Amiel M. Fagbulu and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2017-08-10 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of policy in education has been very important in determining the direction and the rate of its spread in Nigeria. As one moves from one area or era to another, weak policy or lack of policy has created unforeseen problems that have had long-lasting consequences that color how much and what type of education was deemed suitable for a milieu. A lack of understanding of the role of policy has been responsible for many failed interventions in education. This book traces the evolution of policy and attempts to show the correlation between clearly articulated policies and the suitability of the output of the system to respond to the needs of the society.
