The response rate was 70%. It was found that the current ITA programs had broad institutional goals and positive effects on ITAs' improvement of language proficiency, cross culture and communication skills, and instruction skills. Although universities and colleges have been striving for more departmental, faculty and undergraduate students' involvement in ITA training, the levels of involvement were not high. In general, long-term evaluation of training effects on ITAs' teaching performance was largely lacking. Universities and colleges with ITA programs of reported success (with a score of four and higher on a 1-7 scale in this study) had used various formats of evaluation to monitor ITAs in training and to evaluate ITAs' improvement of language proficiency, cross culture and communication skills, and instruction skills. On-going supervision and mentoring were also found to contribute to the success of ITA programs in terms of communication skills improvement among ITAs. It is recommended that everyone involved in ITA training cooperate, coordinate, and communicate with each other to serve ITAs and maximize training efforts. This would involve more dialogue and scientific inquiry among ITA practitioners and other constituencies. For colleges and universities that strive to improve their ITA programs, strategies and best practices shared by respondents of the survey could be adapted to fit the institutional needs and goals in ITA training and development activities.

In my view, using both terms interchangeably is acceptable as long as one considers culture to be a dynamic, negotiable phenomenon (cf. Freitag 2008). Regarding the actual teaching I agree with Hu (2009) that intercultural concepts in spite of their deficits cannot and should not be replaced immediately, but gradually with the narrative-constructive concepts of intercultural learning in mind. The national KMK-Bildungsstandards (2010: 12f.) set rather high standards for ICC emphasising the role of literature and diversity of texts in developing ICC. Landeskunde should be taught as well, but not only to impart fact knowledge, but to enable students to communicate in real intercultural situations. Generally speaking, the task of a teacher is to prepare his students for the challenges of future life and they are definitely going to take place in a globalized, inter- or transcultural world. According to the White Paper on Intercultural Learning by the Council of Europe, in a democracy, we do not only have the opportunity, but the duty to act as active, responsible, reflective and self-critical citizens, respectful of others and to help build a peaceful, democratic world. (2008: 29). I think that helping students to achieve this aim is best done by enhancing their discourse ability (more in chapter 2.1) Since the most common way of teaching EFL in Germany is by using a textbook (cf. Kurtz 2010), this paper will try to find out how well this can be done in regard to developing ICC based on the realities of the FL classroom. In order to do so first of all we have to clarify the basic theoretical concepts which are needed to understand the idea of intercultural communication and consequently the competences which are required for the successful accomplishment of that interactive task. In a second step I will conduct a small qualitative research exploring and evaluating both the theoretical ICC learning models and the textbook New Context.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine how much of an impact in-class activities in an academic communication skills class for international teaching assistants (ITAs) had on an out-of-class simulated office hour activity. Specifically, this study focused on whether ITA performance in a simulated office hour would result in more clarification requests and less miscommunication after completion of classroom activities (as measured by a posttest) than before the unit began (as measured by a pretest). As a class, the ITAs were found to have fewer instances of miscommunication in the posttest than in the pretest and more uses of clarification requests from the pretest to the posttest. The amount of growth in both the number and quality of clarification requests from the pretest and posttest varied between participants. Although one in-class jigsaw activity did promote the use of clarification requests, the role-play activity did not result in the use of as many clarification requests. ITA use of clarification requests during the office hour simulations was affected not only by their ability to request clarification, but also by their attitudes and opinions of how requesting clarification would affect their students' views of them and their teaching abilities. Lastly, due to the completion of self-evaluations after both the pretest and posttest, ITA perceptions of their performances were, for the most part, consistent with data results. Teaching implications are 1) that activity design needs to be carefully considered before activity use, 2) that ITA attitudes must be assessed and addressed during this type of training so ITAs better understand the importance of skills such as requesting clarification, and through this understanding, are more likely to use these skills in real world communication, and 3) that ITA participation in self-assessed pretests and posttests is recommended for ITAs to be more active in their own learning.
