The study finds that, while students' religious engagement declines during college, at the same time they become substantially more caring, tolerant, connected with others, and actively egaged in a spiritual quest. Spiritual growth also enhances academic performance, leadership development, and satisfaction with college. The study provides strong evidence pointing to specific experiences during college that can contribute to students' spiritual growth. The need for spiritual development in college is apparent. Two-thirds of the students in the study express a strong interest in spiritual matters, well over half report that their professors never encourage discussions of religious or spiritual matters, and about the same proportion report that professors never provide opportunities to discuss the purpose and meaning of life. Cultivating the Spirit aims to raise the awareness of academic administrators, faculty, and the public at large to the vital role that spirituality plays in student learning and development. Throughout the book, the authors identify strategies for enhancing students' development and encourage the academy to give greater priority to the spiritual aspects of students' educational and personal development.

Book excerpt: College students undergo identity development in emerging adulthood, including adjustments in relationships, exploration of occupations, and revisions of spiritual worldviews (Arnett, 2000). Using a modified portion of Lents (2004) normative model of life satisfaction, this study sought to construct a moderated mediation path to assess the role spiritual models play in college students developing traits of spirituality, mindfulness, forgiveness, and hope, and the associations these traits had with college self-efficacy. Additionally, this study proposed perspective-taking as a moderator of the association between environmental support from spiritual models and spirituality, mindfulness, forgiveness, and hope, such that college students high in perspective-taking would understand and internalize traits of models rather than only imitating the spiritual practices of the model. Participants (n = 384) in this one-time survey study were recruited from a public, urban university and a private, Christian university. Participants responded to the following inventories: Spiritual Modeling Inventory of Life Environments (SMILE), Assessment of Spirituality and Religious Sentiments Short Form (ASPIRES), Cognitive and Affective Mindfulness Scale, Revised (CAMS-R), Heartland Forgiveness Scale (HFS), The Hope Scale, Perspective-Taking subscale of the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, and the College Self-Efficacy Inventory (CSEI). Results of the moderated mediation paths show spirituality, mindfulness, forgiveness, and hope mediated the association between environmental support from spiritual models and college self-efficacy, but perspective-taking did not moderate associations from environmental support from spiritual models to the mediators. These findings supported the modified portion of Lents (2004) normative model of life satisfaction which states that environmental support, including support given by spiritual models, enhanced the development of healthy traits such as spirituality, mindfulness, forgiveness, and hope. In turn, the healthy traits were associated with increased college self-efficacy..

Book excerpt: Over the past ten years, colleges and universities have faced criticism for an apparent shift away from their historic mission to educate whole students and toward an increasing focus on students as consumers and the training of students for their future careers. These criticisms have suggested that the shift in mission has diminished the academy's ability to address affective development outcomes such as citizenship, care for others, and the inner self. Affective characteristics such as these play an important role in developing students' emotional and physical well-being, improving academic performance, and strengthening social justice outcomes. To address these issues, some have proposed a return to a more holistic model on campus and, specifically, have identified an emphasis on spiritual development as one way to bolster these affective outcomes. The purpose of this study was to examine how students' spiritual development in college is influenced by student-faculty interactions, both in and out of the classroom. Drawing from spiritual development theories, college impact models, and extant literature, the study presents a comprehensive definition of spirituality in college. Three aspects of this definition, namely meaning making, spirituality as a quest, and a moral care for others, are the focus of the analysis for the study. Using a set of national longitudinal surveys administered by the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI), with responses from students in their first (2004) and third (2007) years of college, the study uses blocked, stepwise, regression to inform the relationship between student-faculty interactions and spirituality outcomes. The conclusions from this study suggest that faculty members' interactions with students, both in and out of class, are related to students' spiritual growth in college. Specifically, as faculty incorporate spiritual and developmental teaching methods in the classroom and inquire about students' inner-lives during informal interactions, students tend to demonstrate greater gains in their ability to make meaning of their lives, pursue spirituality as a quest more frequently, and develop a greater moral care for others while in college. In light of these findings, the study offers implications for faculty and student affairs staff and suggestions for future research.
