Book excerpt: This booklet is one in a series of resource manuals to help teacher educators conduct environmental education (EE) teacher workshops or promote EE programs. This unit is intended for workshop facilitators to help teachers integrate environmental themes into their teaching. It provides ideas for making connections between environmental content and other disciplines. An introduction presents a rationale for integrating EE into traditional school curricula. The unit is presented in five sections that describe: (1) three workshop strategies for providing resources that meet teachers' curricular objectives, helping teachers make the content connection, and integrating EE to teach process skills; (2) information for making sense of the mix; (3) the infusion and insertion approaches to integrating EE into the curriculum; (4) 10 activities for use during the workshop; and (5) a list of 23 resources listed under the categories of trainer reference materials, teacher materials for content infusion, and teacher material for process infusion. The activities are presented in four sections that exemplify the multidisciplinary nature of EE, use the content integration strategy to help teachers select activities for their classrooms, use process integration to guide teachers in developing EE that build critical thinking and communication, and help get integration workshops started. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore Your Environment: K-8 Activity Guide includes 50 hands-on, multidisciplinary activities to connect children to nature and increase young people's awareness and knowledge about their environment. Activities include step-by-step instructions, time and material requirements, and corresponding student worksheets with green career connections. Teachers and nonformal educators can easily integrate the activities into their programming. Activities are organized by grade level (K-2, 3-5, and 6-8) and align with national standards for science, English language arts, math, and social studies. Many activities offer variations for a different grade level or focus. While lessons can be conducted both indoors and outdoors, all suggest meaningful ways to take student learning outside. Many activities are particularly suited to urban environments and STEM learning as well as some longer-term studies. This supplementary curriculum develops students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Book excerpt: Teaching outside the classroom improves pupils' engagement with learning as well as their health and wellbeing, but how can teachers link curriculum objectives effectively with enjoyable and motivating outdoor learning in Year 6? The National Curriculum Outdoors: Year 6 presents a series of photocopiable lesson plans that address each primary curriculum subject, whilst enriching pupils with the benefits of learning in the natural environment. Outdoor learning experts Sue Waite, Michelle Roberts and Deborah Lambert provide inspiration for primary teachers to use outdoor contexts as part of their everyday teaching and showcase how headteachers can embed curriculum teaching outside throughout the school, whilst protecting teaching time and maintaining high-quality teaching and performance standards. All of the Year 6 curriculum lessons have been tried and tested successfully in schools and can be adapted and developed for school grounds and local natural environments. What's more, each scheme of work in this all-encompassing handbook includes primary curriculum objectives; intended learning outcomes; warm-up and main activities; plenary guidance; natural connections; ICT and PSHE links; and word banks.

Book excerpt: Americans have long recognized that investments in public education contribute to the common good, enhancing national prosperity and supporting stable families, neighborhoods, and communities. Education is even more critical today, in the face of economic, environmental, and social challenges. Today's children can meet future challenges if their schooling and informal learning activities prepare them for adult roles as citizens, employees, managers, parents, volunteers, and entrepreneurs. To achieve their full potential as adults, young people need to develop a range of skills and knowledge that facilitate mastery and application of English, mathematics, and other school subjects. At the same time, business and political leaders are increasingly asking schools to develop skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and self-management - often referred to as "21st century skills." Education for Life and Work: Developing Transferable Knowledge and Skills in the 21st Century describes this important set of key skills that increase deeper learning, college and career readiness, student-centered learning, and higher order thinking. These labels include both cognitive and non-cognitive skills- such as critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, effective communication, motivation, persistence, and learning to learn. 21st century skills also include creativity, innovation, and ethics that are important to later success and may be developed in formal or informal learning environments. This report also describes how these skills relate to each other and to more traditional academic skills and content in the key disciplines of reading, mathematics, and science. Education for Life and Work: Developing Transferable Knowledge and Skills in the 21st Century summarizes the findings of the research that investigates the importance of such skills to success in education, work, and other areas of adult responsibility and that demonstrates the importance of developing these skills in K-16 education. In this report, features related to learning these skills are identified, which include teacher professional development, curriculum, assessment, after-school and out-of-school programs, and informal learning centers such as exhibits and museums.

Part of a series (under REEP) designed to be taught in sequence as part of a logical whole (although each lesson stands on its own as well). Each unit contains an introduction with background information, a lesson summary with the outline of the instructional flow, a unit evaluation, glossary and bibliography. The lessons contain up to three activities that require up to three class periods to complete. Ready-to-copy pages, written concepts, objectives, materials and time required for each activity are included as well as special teacher resources pages. The sixth grade unit explores concepts of community, habitat and ecosystems, human impact on local ecosystems, and culminates in a lesson on the political process of local land use planning. Estimated time required varies between 40 minutes and 2 hours, some activities requiring multiple class periods. Activities include a pond field trip, games and pantomimes.
