Book excerpt: The purpose, of writing this book, is to provide a self-contained primer, workbook and reader for teaching first-year Sanskrit students with no previous linguistic training. The author has tried throughout the work to introduce, explain and illustrate the most significant features of the language and through verses, quotations, and readings. To these ends, the grammar has been, in several areas, simplified to prevent the beginner from being more hampered than is absolutely necessary by relatively insignificant paradigms, rules and exceptions. Upon completion of this course, students should have a real working knowledge of the major outlines of Sanskrit sentences with some facility and read, with the help of a dictionary, approximately five to ten verses of the Valmiki Ramayana or a similar text in an hour. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sanskrit Language presents a systematic and comprehensive historical account of the developments in phonology and morphology. This is the only book in English which treats the structure of the Sanskrit language in its relation to the other Indo-European languages and throws light on the significance of the discovery of Sanskrit. It is this discovery that contributed to the study of the comparative philology of the Indo-European languages and eventually the whole science of modern linguistics. Besides drawing on the works of Brugmann and Wackernagel, Professor Burrow incorporates in this book material from Hittite and taking into account various verbal constructions as found in Hittite, he relates the perfect form of Sanskrit to it. The profound influence that the Dravidian languages had on the structure of the Sanskrit language has also been presented lucidly and with a balanced perspective. In a nutshell, the present work can be called, without exaggeration, a pioneering endeavour in the field of linguistics and Indology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sanskrit संस्कृत is commonly written in the देवनागरी Devanagari script, whereas English is written in the Roman script. Earlier Sanskrit was written in the Sharada Lipi also. This script flourished post the golden age of the Gupta period in India circa 2nd to 13th century CE, and continued to be used till as recently as the 18th century. India's Finance Minister Hon. Nirmala Sitharaman on 1st Feb 2020 during presentation of the Union Budget in point No 20 recited a verse in Kashmiri and displayed the graphic of a poem written in Sharada Lipi. This book attempts to elucidate the Sharada lipi as found in ancient Sanskrit texts. This makes it an invaluable resource for the linguist and the scholar who is helping to revive the script. It is hoped this book will enable avid readers to decipher the wisdom in the ancient texts and come up with some amazing and much needed scientific inventions. The Śāradā script is an abugida writing system of the Brahmi family. It is commonly spelt as Sharda or Sharada. It was in use for ‎Sanskrit and Kashmiri languages. Even today, birth horoscopes are made by pundits using this script in Kashmir. The Gurmukhi script used in writing the Punjabi language is a descendant of Śāradā Lipi.

Attributed to Adi Sesa, the primeval serpent, or at least to his incarnation Patanjali, it gives in a mere 85 verses employing ancient Samkhya terminology a succinct statement of the highest truths taught in non-dual Vedanta. Its teachings have many parallels to those found in Gaudapada's famous Mandukya-karika. This edition includes the original Sanskrit text. Added to this edition is the later Kashmir Saiva work of the same name, written by Abhinavagupta, which is based on Adi Sesa's earlier work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of ancient and medieval contributions in India to the field of vyakarana and thereby to our knowledge of grammar and the history of linguistics is universally accepted. This volume presents sixteen contributions to this field of study which were presented at the fourteenth World Sanskrit Conference held in Kyoto, Japan, September 1st-5th 2009. The papers cover a wide range of subjects, both chronologically and thematically. Most of the studies concern aspects of Paninian grammar, with respect to both Panini's grammar proper and to works of Paniniyas, including Patanjali's Mahabhasya, Bhartrhari's Vakyapadiya and the Kasikavrtti of Jayaditya and Vamana. There are also contributions that range farther afield, covering the Sanskrit grammar of Paulinus a Sancto Bartholomaeo, Paninian features to be seen in the Lilatilakam of fourteenth century Kerala, and a study considering whether formal hand gestures used in Indian dance can possibly come within the range of what is called vyakarana. This collection should be of interest not only to Sanskritists but also more generally to students of Indian culture and linguists.
