Book excerpt: A Shelf Awareness Best Book of the Year NCAA football is big business. Every Saturday millions of people file into massive stadiums or tune in on television as "athlete-students" give everything they've got to make their team a success. Billions of dollars now flow into the game. But what is the true cost? The players have no share in the oceans of money. And once the lights go down, the glitter doesn't shine so brightly. Filled with mind-blowing details of major NCAA football scandals, with stops at Ohio State, Tennessee, Texas Tech, Missouri, BYU, LSU, Texas A&M and many more, The System explores and exposes the complex, and perhaps broken, machine that churns behind the glamour of college football. With a New Afterword.

Book excerpt: This book is the day by day story of the 1954 Indians, whose .721 winning percentage is still the highest in American League history. It tells how down the city of Cleveland was on the team following three straight second-place finishes, how little was expected of it by its fans, and even some of its players, and how it exceeded all expectations by winning a league-record 111 games and a pennant, before flopping in the World Series.

Book excerpt: The Detroit Lions are an American football professional team based in Detroit, Michigan. They are a member of the National Football League (NFL) and compete in the North division alongside the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, and Chicago Bears. The Lions were founded in 1930 and have four NFL championships, the most recent being in 1957. Despite their long history, the team has struggled in recent years, with only one playoff victory and no Super Bowl appearances since 1957. The Lions play their home games at Ford Field, which opened in 2002 and seats over 65,000 people. Honolulu blue, silver, and white are the team's colors, and their mascot is a lion named Roary. In the hopes of turning the team around, the Lions hired a new head coach, Dan Campbell, and a new general manager, Brad Holmes, in 2021. The Lions have also made a number of significant roster moves, including trading quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for Jared Goff and a number of draft picks. The Lions are rebuilding and looking to develop young talent while improving their overall team culture as of the 2021 season. While the road ahead may be difficult, fans remain optimistic that the Lions will eventually return to winning ways and bring another championship to Detroit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don Perkins led a life as one of the most honored athletes in the history of the University of New Mexico and the Dallas Cowboys. But Perkins’s life was far more complex and, at times, controversial. He experienced the traumas of racial discrimination, death, divorce, football-related injuries, and a never-ending search for his own identity. In his search, Perkins ventured into sportscasting, public speaking, community relations, big-rig trucking, government work, and even amateur theater, where he portrayed Frederick Douglass and other famous Black leaders. Through it all, he remained a kind, unassuming, charismatic man, universally admired by family members, friends, and millions of fans. Don Perkins: A Champion’s Life is the final tribute he so richly deserves.
