Book excerpt: The corrosion of titanium alloy canisters in a plutonic rock repository, as envisaged in the AECL/Ontario Hydro HLNW disposal concept, has been explored using four deterministic models. A Mixed Potential Model (MPM) was used to calculate the corrosion potential of the canister as a function of time after resaturation, and it is predicted that the corrosion potential will shift in the negative direction as the ambient oxygen is consumed coupled with a much smaller positive shift due to the decay in temperature. Maximum general corrosion rates have been estimated using the Maximum Rate Model (MRM) and the Radiolytic Maximum Rate Model (RMRM), both of which equate thecorrosion rate to the maximum possible flux of oxygen (MRM) and oxygen plus oxidizing radiolysis products (RMRM) to the canister surface. These calculations suggest that the radiolysis of water is not of major significance in establishing the general corrosion rate. Furthermore, general corrosion is predicted not to be a threat to the integrity of a thin wall (6.35mm) titanium container within the 500 year design life. Finally, corrosion rates have also been estimated using the WAPPA code and the container is predicted to withstand crevice corrosion for up to 1200 years and to be unbreached by general corrosion for 2000-2500 years after resaturation.

Book excerpt: The damage to high-level radioactive-waste containers by pitting corrosion is an important design and performance assessment consideration. It is desirable to calculate the evolution of the pit depth distribution, not just the time required for initial penetration of the containers, so that the area available for advective of diffusive release of radionuclides through the container can be estimated. A phenomenological approach for computing the time evolution of these distributions is presented which combines elements of the deterministic and stochastic aspects of pit growth. The consistency of this approach with the mechanisms believed to control the evolution of the pit depth distribution is discussed. Qualitative comparisons of preliminary model predictions with a variety of experimental data from the literature are shown to be generally favorable. The sensitivity of the simulated distributions to changes in the input parameters is discussed. Finally, the results of the current model are compared to those of existing approaches based on extreme-value statistics, particularly regarding the extrapolation of laboratory data to large exposed surface areas.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stainless steel canisters encased in vented concrete overpacks are used to store used nuclear fuel at interim spent fuel storage installations in the United States. These storage systems are exposed to the elements. There is concern that, over time, a deliquesced salt film could develop on the stainless steel canister. Such a film can create a corrosive environment in stainless steels. If a stress is present on or in then material, stress corrosion cracking (SCC) could be a possibility. Because the canister welds are not stress-relieved in order to avoid sensitization of the steel, residual stresses are expected to be present in the canisters. Thus, there is interest in determining the likelihood that (a) a sufficiently corrosive film develops on a stainless steel used fuel canister (b) there are sufficiently high stresses in the material at the location of the corrosive film (c) SCC initiates and (d) the crack propagates through the canister wall, resulting in canister failure. This thesis begins with the assumption that a corrosive film has developed on the canister surface, and pits have begun to initiate. It investigates various methods of modeling SCC in the canister wall after the point of corrosion pit initiation. An extensive literature review was carried out in order to understand the different SCC models that currently exist in the literature. A figure-of-merit was developed to decide which models were the most likely to be helpful to the modeling of SCC in used fuel canisters. The figure-of-merit was then used to select the most promising models. These models were then used to write MATLAB@ simulations that could be used to predict time-to-failure in canisters due to SCC once corrosion pits have begun to grow. The results of these simulations are then considered and compared, and used to inform recommendations for future development of a useful predictive model of SCC in used fuel canisters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All significant studies agree that aqueous corrosion continues to cost nations dearly in almost every area of technological endeavour. Over the past ten years, microcomputers have facilitated an explosion in the power of modelling as a technique in science and engineering. In corrosion they have enabled better understanding of polarization curves, they have transformed the scope of electrochemical impedance measurements and they have placed a large range of electrochemistry at the fingertips of the corrosion scientist. This book focuses on the models, rather than the computing, which have been made possible during the past decade. Aimed at all those with an interest in corrosion and its control, the book draws together the range of new modelling strands, suggests new avenues of approach and generates further momentum for improvements to corrosion management, whether by increased understanding of atomistic processes or by control of large plant.

Book excerpt: A key component of the Engineered Barrier System (EBS) being designed for containment of spent-fuel and high-level waste at the proposed geological repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada is a two-layer canister. In this particular design, the inner barrier is made of a corrosion resistant material (CRM) such as Alloy 625 or C-22, while the outer barrier is made of a corrosion-allowance material (CAM) such as carbon steel or Monel 400. An integrated predictive model is being developed to account for the effects of localized environmental conditions in the CRM-CAM crevice on the initiation and propagation of pits through the CRM.

Book excerpt: An assessment was performed of approaches to life prediction for high-level nuclear waste containers. It was concluded that the commonly used remaining life assessment techniques are inadequate for the prediction of performance of the waste canisters primarily because of the reliance on empirical damage accumulation laws. The best hope for prediction of performance of the repository relies on utilizing mechanistic models based on first principles. It was further concluded that prediction of performance of the waste containers should rely primarily on propagation phenomenon, because of the uncertainties in proving that initiation will not occur.
