Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) inventory model first appeared in 1913, and in its centennial, it is still one of the most important inventory models. Despite the abundance of both classical and new research results, there was (until now) no comprehensive reference source that provides the state-of-the-art findings on both theoretical and applied research on the EOQ and its related models. This edited handbook puts together all these interesting works and the respective insights into an edited volume. The handbook contains papers which explore both the deterministic and the stochastic EOQ-model based problems and applications. It is organized into three parts: Part I presents three papers that provide an introduction and review of various EOQ related models. Part II includes four technical analyses on single-echelon EOQ-model based inventory problems. Part III consists of five papers on applications of the EOQ model for multi-echelon supply chain inventory analysis.

Book excerpt: Inventories are prevalent everywhere in the commercial world, whether it be in retail stores, manufacturing facilities, government stockpile material, Federal Reserve banks, or even your own household. This textbook examines basic mathematical techniques used to sufficiently manage inventories by using various computational methods and mathematical models. The text is presented in a way such that each section can be read independently, and so the order in which the reader approaches the book can be inconsequential. It contains both deterministic and stochastic models along with algorithms that can be employed to find solutions to a variety of inventory control problems. With exercises at the end of each chapter and a clear, systematic exposition, this textbook will appeal to advanced undergraduate and first-year graduate students in operations research, industrial engineering, and quantitative MBA programs. It also serves as a reference for professionals in both industry and government worlds. The prerequisite courses include introductory optimization methods, probability theory (non-measure theoretic), and stochastic processes.

This book was released on 1967 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The characteristics of a multi-product production and inventory system with probabilistic demand and interdependency in the set-up cost are studied over a single period, and optimal ordering policies for inventory replenishment are derived. Three cost elements are assumed to affect the operation of the system: a production cost, a holding cost and a penalty cost. The fixed component of the production cost, i.e., the set-up cost, will, in general, depend on whether an individual ordering policy, a partial joint ordering policy or a total joint ordering policy from production is used. In general, for an n-commodity system, one can define the optimal strategies over a policy space in E superscript n. This concept is illustrated for n = 2. Thus, depending on the initial stock level of the items either of the four following alternatives is possible: (a) produce the first item only; (b) produce the second item only; (c) produce both items simultaneously; (d) do not produce anything. The general problem is clearly equivalent to a multi-commodity, multi-warehouse system supplied by a single source. (Author).

Book excerpt: This third edition, which has been fully updated and now includes improved and extended explanations, is suitable as a core textbook as well as a source book for industry practitioners. It covers traditional approaches for forecasting, lot sizing, determination of safety stocks and reorder points, KANBAN policies and Material Requirements Planning. It also includes recent advances in inventory theory, for example, new techniques for multi-echelon inventory systems and Roundy's 98 percent approximation. The book also considers methods for coordinated replenishments of different items, and various practical issues in connection with industrial implementation. Other topics covered in Inventory Control include: alternative forecasting techniques, material on different stochastic demand processes and how they can be fitted to empirical data, generalized treatment of single-echelon periodic review systems, capacity constrained lot sizing, short sections on lateral transshipments and on remanufacturing, coordination and contracts. As noted, the explanations have been improved throughout the book and the text also includes problems, with solutions in an appendix.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large scale inventory distribution system typically comprise a hierarchy of retail stores and warehouses. The paper presents a model for finding the optimal design of such systems. Given the maximum number of facilities under consideration and their possible locations, the problem is to determine which facilities to include in the system and which products to stock at each in order to minimize the cost of the system. Demand for the products may be deterministic or stochastic. To use the model it is necessary to know the optimal inventory policies for the multi-echelon systems under consideration, however, an important feature of this work is that any multi-echelon model may be used in tandem with this design model. Included is an example to illustrate the model and the two points which are the basis for its formulation: first, there is generally no single design which is best for all products; second, the design which is optimal for a given product is not necessarily the best design to use when trying to minimize the cost of the entire system. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of an Advanced Study and Re search Institute on Theoretical Approaches to Scheduling Problems. The Institute was held in Durham, England, from July 6 to July 17, 1981. It was attended by 91 participants from fifteen different countries. The format of the Institute was somewhat unusual. The first eight of the ten available days were devoted to an Advanced Study Insti tute, with lectures on the state of the art with respect to deter ministic and stochastic scheduling models and on the interface between these two approaches. The last two days were occupied by an Advanced Research Institute, where recent results and promising directions for future research, especially in the interface area, were discussed. Altogether, 37 lectures were delivered by 24 lecturers. They have all contributed to these proceedings, the first part of which deals with the Advanced Study Institute and the second part of which covers the Advanced Research Institute. Each part is preceded by an introduction, written by the editors. While confessing to a natural bias as organizers, we believe that the Institute has been a rewarding and enjoyable event for everyone concerned. We are very grateful to all those who have contributed to its realization.

Book excerpt: Quantitativeapproachesforsolvingproductionplanningandinventorymanagement problems in industry have gained growing importance in the past years. Due to the increasinguse of AdvancedPlanningSystems, a widespreadpracticalapplicationof the sophisticated optimization models and algorithms developed by the Production Management and Operations Research community now seem within reach. The possibility that productscan be replaced by certain substitute productsexists in various application areas of production planning and inventory management. Substitutions can be useful for a number of reasons, among others to circ- vent production and supply bottlenecks and disruptions, increase the service level, reduce setup costs and times, and lower inventories and thereby decrease ca- tal lockup. Considering the current trend in industry towards shorter product life cycles and greater product variety, the importance of substitutions appears likely to grow. Closely related to substitutions are ?exible bills-of-materials and recipes in multi-level production systems. However, so far, the aspect of substitutions has not attracted much attention in academic literature. Existing lot-sizing models matching complex requirements of industrial optimization problems (e.g., constrained capacities, sequence-dependent setups, multiple resources) such as the Capacitated Lot-Sizing Problem with Sequence-Dependent Setups (CLSD) and the General Lot-Sizing and Scheduling Problem for Multiple Production Stages (GLSPMS) do not feature in substitution options.
