Book excerpt: Current measurement of the phosphorus level in natural water are based on the phosphomolybdenum blue (PMB) method. In this method, the phosphate and molybdate ion form 12-molybdophosphoric acid (12-MPA) which is reduced to yield intensely coloured PMB, and its intensity is correlated with the phosphate concentration using spectrophotometry. Despite its well-established sensitivity and selectivity to the phosphate ion, commercially available in situ portable measurement devices suffer from their large footprints and limited working time. This is mainly because the wet chemistry of the PMB method requires a constant supply of liquid reagents of which volume determines the footprint and working time of the device. Such limitations of the existing methods make it difficult to access the temporal and spatial information of the phosphorus level in natural water which is crucial in the control of eutrophication. In this thesis, we designed, fabricated, and evaluated two novel electrochemical phosphate detection devices that offer unique opportunities to be developed into portable, in-situ, and automated phosphate detection devices. The detection of phosphate is based on the formation of 12-MPA, wherein reagents are supplied in situ by the anodic dissolution of molybdenum (Mo). The first version of the device with two Mo electrodes in two separate chambers demonstrated that reducing the sample volume of the device reduces the time of detection and the energy consumption per measurement based on the Mo oxidation, when compared to the current state of the art (2 min and 900 mJ versus 70 min and 18 J, respectively). The second version device is improved further by simplifying the system into a single chamber with a single Mo electrode, which additionally decreases the response time to 30 s and the energy consumption to 4 mJ. The experimental results with these two devices demonstrate the capability of phosphate determination (0.1 to 25 pM) in a high conductivity background solution (0.1 M NaCl), such as seawater, without significant interference from silicate ions. In addition, the second version of the device broadens its application into other types of natural water with low conductivity, and provides a promissing possibility to be further developed into an open-cell type sensor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optofluidic devices are of high scientific and industrial interest in chemistry, biology, material science, pharmacy, and medicine. In recent years, they have experienced strong development because of impressive achievements in the synergistic combination of photonics and micro/nanofluidics. Sensing and/or lasing platforms showing unprecedented sensitivities in extremely small analyte volumes, and allowing real-time analysis within a lab-on-a-chip approach, have been developed. They are based on the interaction of fluids with evanescent waves induced at the surface of metallic or photonic structures, on the implementation of microcavities to induce optical resonances in the fluid medium, or on other interactions of the microfluidic systems with light. In this context, a large variety of optofluidic devices has emerged, covering topics such as cell manipulation, microfabrication, water purification, energy production, catalytic reactions, microparticle sorting, micro-imaging, or bio-sensing. Moreover, the integration of these optofluidic devices in larger electro-optic platforms represents a highly valuable improvement towards advanced applications, such as those based on surface plasmon resonances that are already on the market. In this Special Issue, we invited the scientific community working in this rapidly evolving field to publish recent research and/or review papers on these optofluidic devices and their applications.

Book excerpt: This book describes a pathway for sustainable phosphorus management via the Global Transdisciplinary Processes for Sustainable Phosphorus Management project (Global TraPs). Global TraPs is a multi-stakeholder forum in which scientists from a variety of disciplines join with key actors in practice to jointly identify critical questions and to articulate what new knowledge, technologies and policy processes are needed to ensure that future phosphorus use is sustainable, improves food security and environmental quality and provides benefits for the poor. The book offers insight into economic scarcity and identifies options to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impacts of anthropogenic phosphorus flows at all stages of the supply and use chain.

Book excerpt: Technological advancements in recent years have enabled the development of tiny, cheap disposable and self contained battery powered computers, known as sensor nodes or “motes”, which can accept input from an attached sensor, process this input and transmit the results wirelessly to some interested device(s). When a number of these nodes work together, conceivably up to hundreds of thousands, a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is formed. Research in the area of wireless sensor networks has become increasingly wid- pread in recent years, partly due to their wide range of potential uses and also partly due to the fact that the technology enabling such networks is now widely available from many di?erent suppliers, such as: Crossbow, MoteIV, Intel and SUN (java based motes). These wireless sensor networks have the potential to allow a level of integration between computers and the physical world that, to date, has been virtually impos- ble. The uses for such networks is almost limitless and include such diverse app- cations as a counter sniper system for urban warfare [1] tracking the path of a forest re [2], determining the structural stability of a building after an earthquake [3], or tracking people or objects inside a building [4], etc.
