Book Synopsis Inspection and Monitoring Techniques for Bridges and Civil Structures by : G Fu
Download or read book Inspection and Monitoring Techniques for Bridges and Civil Structures written by G Fu and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-09-20 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The safety, maintenance and repair of bridges and buildings depend on effective inspection and monitoring techniques. These methods need to be able to identify problems often hidden within structures before they become serious. This important collection reviews key techniques and their applications to bridges, buildings and other civil structures. The first group of chapters reviews ways of testing corrosion in concrete components. Given their continuing importance and vulnerability to decay, the next series of chapters describes ways of testing wood components within civil structures. A final group of chapters looks at visual and acoustic techniques and their use to assess bridges in particular. Inspection and monitoring techniques for bridges and civil structures is an invaluable reference for civil engineers involved in safety inspection, maintenance and repair of bridges and civil structures. Reviews key inspection and monitoring techniques and their applications to bridges, building and other civil structures Edited by a leading authority in the field

This book was released on 2011-03-10 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wood is one of the most intriguing structural materials and the only one that is truly renewable. Along with stone, wood is the oldest structural material on the planet and has been extensively used throughout human history. Due to its aesthetical value and positive environmental impact, wood has experienced a renaissance in construction. As a biodegradable, hygroscopic, non-isotropic material, wood presents special challenges for a professional and requires through knowledge ranging from biology to continuum mechanics. This state-of-the-art report reflects the current knowledge in the area of in situ assessment of the physical and mechanical properties of wood structures. Nondestructive, semi-destructive and destructive methods are described in a systematic manner where technology, equipment and limitations are discussed. Some of the discussed methods are used in other materials such as masonry and concrete. Most of the methods, however, are specific to wood and special qualifications are required to understand and apply these methods effectively. Existing methods are constantly improved and new methods are being developed. This report includes methods that are used in practice or have shown significant promise and have a body of knowledge that supports statements made in this report. This is a useable tool for professionals, researchers, educators and students

Book excerpt: "This volume contains 101 papers presented at the 8th International Conference on the Application of Stress Wave Theory to Piles, held in Lisbon, Portugal in 2008." "It is divided in 14 chapters according to the conference themes: Wave mechanics applied to pile engineering; Relationship between static resistance to driving and long-term static soil resistance; Case histories involving measurementand analysis of stress waves; Dynamic monitoring of driven piles; Dynamic soil-pile interaction models - numerical and physical modeling; High-strain dynamic test; Low-strain dynamic test; Rapid-load test; Monitoring and analysis of vibratory driven piles; Correlation of dynamic and static load tests; Quality assurance of deep foundations using dynamic methods; Incorporation of dynamic testing into design codes and testing standards; Ground vibrations induced by pile motions; Dynamic measurements in ground field testing." "This conference aims to contribute to a better and more efficient professional interaction between specialized contractors, designers and academicians. By joining the contribution of all of them it was possible to elucidate the today's state-of-the-art in science, technology and practice in the application of stress wave theory to piles."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis American Environmentalism by : J. Michael Martinez
Download or read book American Environmentalism written by J. Michael Martinez and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-06-20 with total page 1227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protecting the natural environment and promoting sustainability have become important objectives, but achieving such goals presents myriad challenges for even the most committed environmentalist. American Environmentalism: Philosophy, History, and Public Policy examines whether competing interests can be reconciled while developing consistent, coherent, effective public policy to regulate uses and protection of the natural environment without destroying the national economy. It then reviews a range of possible solutions. The book delves into key normative concepts that undergird American perspectives on nature by providing an overview of philosophical concepts found in the western intellectual tradition, the presuppositions inherent in neoclassical economics, and anthropocentric (human-centered) and biocentric (earth-centered) positions on sustainability. It traces the evolution of attitudes about nature from the time of the Ancient Greeks through Europeans in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the Enlightenment and the American Founders, the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and up to the present. Building on this foundation, the author examines the political landscape as non-governmental organizations (NGOs), industry leaders, and government officials struggle to balance industrial development with environmental concerns. Outrageous claims, silly misrepresentations, bogus arguments, absurd contentions, and overblown prophesies of impending calamities are bandied about by many parties on all sides of the debate—industry spokespeople, elected representatives, unelected regulators, concerned citizens, and environmental NGOs alike. In lieu of descending into this morass, the author circumvents the silliness to explore the crucial issues through a more focused, disciplined approach. Rather than engage in acrimonious debate over minutiae, as so often occurs in the context of "green" claims, he recasts the issue in a way that provides a cohesive look at all sides. This effort may be quixotic, but how else to cut the Gordian knot?
