Book excerpt: We have developed equipment to determine the "thermal conductivity" of insulating materials, in the temperature range 25° to 1600°C, by the hot-wire method. We have based our method on the German draft standard DIN 51046 and on the work of Padgett and Davis at the British Ceramic Research Association (BCRA). The method has been applied to measurements on polycrystalline alumina fibers, where the "thermal conductivities" range from 0.03 to 0.8 W/m-K. This paper gives details of our experiences with the hot-wire method and indicates some areas where we have found difficulties that are not completely covered in the specification.
Book Synopsis Determination of the Thermal Conductivity by Using the Hot Wire Method by : Giovanni Alcocer
Download or read book Determination of the Thermal Conductivity by Using the Hot Wire Method written by Giovanni Alcocer and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The measurement of the physical properties (density, viscosity, surface tension, thermal conductivity, etc.) is of great importance to the research, industry and physical, chemical and biomedical applications. The thermal conductivity is a measurement of the material's ability to conduct heat. The Transient Hot Wire method is a suitable method to measure the thermal conductivity due to its very cheap cost of construction, accuracy and because it is a fast method of measurement. The implementation requires accurate temperature sensing, automatic control, data acquisition and data analysis. The basic procedure consists of measuring the temporal temperature rise in a thermoresistance (thin wire) immersed in the solution by applying an electrical current in the wire. Therefore, the wire works as a heat source and a temperature sensor. The time of measurement is very short and therefore the convection effect could be minimized. Then, the heat transfer to the infinite medium is due only to the conduction transfer effect. The thermal conductivity can be determined from the slope of the curve T versus ln(t) due to the linear relation between T and ln(t)."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the main methods used for thermal properties measurement. It aims to be accessible to all those, specialists in heat transfer or not, who need to measure the thermal properties of a material. The objective is to allow them to choose the measurement method the best adapted to the material to be characterized, and to pass on them all the theoretical and practical information allowing implementation with the maximum of precision.

Book Synopsis Analysis of the Applicability of the Hot-Wire Technique for Determination of the Thermal Conductivity of Diathermanous Materials by : HA. Fine
Download or read book Analysis of the Applicability of the Hot-Wire Technique for Determination of the Thermal Conductivity of Diathermanous Materials written by HA. Fine and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hot-wire technique has been used to measure the thermal conductivity of many electrically and thermally insulating materials and the effective thermal conductivity of some diathermanous materials. An analysis of the heat transfer in diathermanous materials is presented which indicates that the method will not give a correct value of the effective thermal conductivity when radiation conduction is of importance. Until an exact solution to this heat-transfer problem is found, an ASTM standard for hot-wire type measurements on diathermanous materials is not recommended.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Thermal Conductivity Conference was started in 1961 with the initiative of Mr. Charles F. Lucks and grew out of the needs of researchers in the field. The Conferences were held annually from 1961 to 1973 and have been held biennially since 1975 when our Center for Informa tion and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) of Purdue University became the Permanent Sponsor of the Conferences. -These Conferences provide a broadly based forum for researchers actively working on the thermal con ductivity and closely related properties to convene on a regular basis to exchange their ideas and experiences and report their findings and results. The Conferences have been self-perpetuating and are an example of how a technical community with a common purpose can transcend the invisible. arti ficial barriers between disciplines and gather together in increasing num bers without the need of national publicity and continuing funding support. when they see something worthwhile going on. It is believed that this ser ies of Conferences not only will grow stronger. but will set an example for researchers in other fields on how to jointly attack their own problem areas.
