Book Synopsis Toxicological Effects of Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances by : Jamie C. DeWitt
Download or read book Toxicological Effects of Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances written by Jamie C. DeWitt and published by Humana Press. This book was released on 2015-04-14 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book serves as a timely and comprehensive overview of the latest science for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), covering the development of methods for assessing PFASs in biological fluids and tissues as well as the current knowledge regarding their toxicity to vertebrate organisms. This book includes chapters on human and wildlife exposure/body burdens, reviews of metabolism and toxicological effects by organ system/developmental stage and aspects of PFAS toxicity that are driving PFAS research and regulatory oversight. Toxicological Effects of Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances provide critical assessments of the most controversial topics surrounding toxicological evaluation of PFASs to give readers an expert perspective on the issues. Emphasis is placed on the integration of modes and mechanisms of action with functional endpoints that are relevant to human and wildlife health. This book will be a useful resource for toxicologists, environmental chemists, risk assessors and researchers with an interest in the class of compounds known as perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances.

Book Synopsis Bioseparations Downstream Processing for Biotechnology by : Paul A. Belter
Download or read book Bioseparations Downstream Processing for Biotechnology written by Paul A. Belter and published by Wiley-Interscience. This book was released on 1994-10-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offers a concise introduction to the separation and purification of biochemicals. Bridges two scientific cultures, providing an introduction to bioseparations for scientists with no background in engineering and for engineers with little grounding in biology. The authors supplement the ideas by simple worked examples, making the techniques of bioseparations easy to learn. Discusses removal of insolubles, product isolation, purification and polishing.
Download or read book Vectors written by Raymond L. Rodriguez and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2014-05-20 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vectors: A Survey of Molecular Cloning Vectors and Their Uses focuses on the functions of molecular cloning vectors. The book first discusses bacterial plasmid pBR322. Topics include criteria for plasmid vector design, construction and structure, transcriptional signals, DNA replication, recombination, mobilization, and plasmid stability. The text also examines bacteriophage lambda cloning vectors; filamentous phages as cloning vectors; chimeric single-stranded DNA phage-plasmid cloning vectors; and phage-plasmid hybrid vectors. The selection discusses cosmids and plasmid positive selection vectors, including library and construction, cosmid rescue, and positive selection vectors using plasmid-encoded lethal function. The text also examines vectors for regulating expression of cloned DNA, including lambda promoters, secretion vectors, and protein fusion vectors. The book takes a look at vectors with adjustable copy numbers. Copy number and protein production; adjustable copy number vectors; future expression vectors; rate-limiting steps of protein production; and promoters and ribosome binding sites are explained. The text puts emphasis on vectors for the synthesis of specific RNAs in vitro and cloning vectors for gram-positive bacteria. The selection is a valuable source of data for readers interested in molecular cloning vectors.

Book Synopsis The Language of Biotechnology by : John M. Walker
Download or read book The Language of Biotechnology written by John M. Walker and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dictionary attempts to define routinely used specialized language in the various areas of biotechnology, and remain suitable for use by scientists involved in unrelated disciplines. Viewing biotechnology as the practical application of biological systems to the manufacturing and service industries, and to the management of the environment, terms defined have been selected from as broad a spectrum as possible to include work accomplished by the following disciplines: (1) microbiology; (2) pharmacology; (3) biochemistry; (4) chemistry; (5) physiology; (6) chemical engineering; (7) genetic engineering; (8) enzymology; and (9) cell biology. The typical biotechnologist can utilize this dictionary to integrate specialized work with studies being carried out by collaborators in related fields, particularly with respect to differences in terminology, i.e., jargon. Book Synopsis Uncertainty in Risk Assessment, Risk Management, and Decision Making by : V.T. Covello
Download or read book Uncertainty in Risk Assessment, Risk Management, and Decision Making written by V.T. Covello and published by Springer. This book was released on 1987-05-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this volume--uncertainties in risk assessment and management--reflects an important theme in health, safety, and environ mental decision making. MOst technological hazards are characterized by substantial uncertainty. Recent examples include nuclear waste disposal, acid rain, asbestos in schools, carcinogens in food, and hazardous waste. realing with such uncertainty is arguably the most difficult and challeng ing task facing risk assessors and managers today. Four primary sources of uncertainty in risk assessment and management can be identified: (1) uncertainties about definitions; (2) uncertainties about scientific facts; (3) uncertainties about risk perceptions and atti tudes; and (4) uncertainties about values. Uncertainties about definitions derive primarily from disagreements about the meaning and interpretation of key concepts, such as probability. Uncertainties about scientific facts derive primarily from disagreements about failure modes, the probability and magnitude of adverse health or environmental consequences, cause and effect relationships, dose-response relationships, and exposure patterns. Uncertainties about risk perceptions and attitudes derive primarily from disagreements about what constitutes a significant or acceptable level of risk. Uncertainties about values derive primarily from disagreements about the desirability or worth of alternative risk management actions or conse quences. The papers in this volume address each of these sources of uncertainty from a variety of perspectives. Reflecting the broad scope of risk assess ment and risk management research, the papers include contributions from safety engineers, epidemiologists, toxicologists, chemists, biostatisticians, biologists, decision analysts, economists, psychologists, political scien tists, sociologists, ethicists, and lawyers.
