Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A synthetic presentation of the theory of yield design is illustrated by examples such as the stability analysis of reinforced soil structures and the resistance of long fiber reinforced composite materials. The classical limit analysis theory when standard elastic perfectly plastic behaviour can be assumed yields a more precise assessment of the global bearing capacities of structures and makes optimal limit design possible. Structural optimal design is also studied with respect to eigenvalues as well as Structural Topology and Design Optimization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Articles in this book examine various materials and how to determine directly the limit state of a structure, in the sense of limit analysis and shakedown analysis. Apart from classical applications in mechanical and civil engineering contexts, the book reports on the emerging field of material design beyond the elastic limit, which has further industrial design and technological applications. Readers will discover that “Direct Methods” and the techniques presented here can in fact be used to numerically estimate the strength of structured materials such as composites or nano-materials, which represent fruitful fields of future applications. Leading researchers outline the latest computational tools and optimization techniques and explore the possibility of obtaining information on the limit state of a structure whose post-elastic loading path and constitutive behavior are not well defined or well known. Readers will discover how Direct Methods allow rapid and direct access to requested information in mathematically constructive manners without cumbersome step-by-step computation. Both researchers already interested or involved in the field and practical engineers who want to have a panorama of modern methods for structural safety assessment will find this book valuable. It provides the reader with the latest developments and a significant amount of references on the topic.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LE TRAVAIL REALISE A POUR OBJET LA DETERMINATION DES DOMAINES DE RESISTANCE MACROSCOPIQUES DE MATERIAUX HETEROGENES NON PERIODIQUES, DANS LE CADRE DE LA THEORIE DU CALCUL A LA RUPTURE. AFIN DE CARACTERISER LE COMPORTEMENT NON LINEAIRE DES MATERIAUX ALEATOIREMENT HETEROGENES, LE MODELE EXTREMAL HETEROGENE (M.E.H.) PROPOSE UNE FORMULATION INTERESSANTE DANS LE CAS OU LE COMPORTEMENT DES MATERIAUX CONSTITUTIFS DERIVE D'UN POTENTIEL. UN MODELE EN CONTRAINTES, UTILISANT LE CADRE CONCEPTUEL DU M.E.H., EST DEVELOPPE. CE MODELE CONCERNE LES MATERIAUX DONT LE DOMAINE DE RESISTANCE EST, SOIT CONVEXE (DANS CE CAS IL EST IDENTIQUE AU M.E.H.), SOIT SIMPLEMENT ETOILE DE CENTRE L'ORIGINE DES CONTRAINTES. UNE APPLICATION EST REALISEE SUR UN MATERIAU PERFORE ALEATOIREMENT. LE MODELE EN CONTRAINTES ADOPTE DEUX DESCRIPTIONS POUR LE MATERIAU PERFORE. LA PREMIERE DESCRIPTION EST BASEE SUR LES FRACTIONS VOLUMIQUES DES MATERIAUX CONSTITUTIFS. LA DEUXIEME DESCRIPTION SUPPOSE QUE LE MATERIAU PERFORE ALEATOIREMENT EST UN AGREGAT DE PLUSIEURS MATERIAUX PERFORES PERIODIQUEMENT. CETTE MODELISATION FOURNIT UNE FAMILLE DE DOMAINES DE RESISTANCE DEPENDANT D'UN PARAMETRE D'HETEROGENEITE R. CE DERNIER EST DETERMINE PAR CALAGE DES PREVISIONS NUMERIQUES AUX RESULTATS EXPERIMENTAUX POUR UNE SOLLICITATION DONNEE. LE DOMAINE DE RESISTANCE AINSI OBTENU EST VALIDE PAR CONFRONTATION DES PREVISIONS NUMERIQUES AUX RESULTATS EXPERIMENTAUX POUR D'AUTRES TYPES DE SOLLICITATIONS. PARALLELEMENT A CE TRAVAIL, DES METHODES DE RESOLUTION SONT DEVELOPPEES (A LA FOIS SIMPLES ET PERFORMANTES) POUR LES PROBLEMES D'OPTIMISATION AUXQUELS CONDUISENT LES APPROCHES EN CONTRAINTES (DU CALCUL A LA RUPTURE OU DE L'HOMOGENEISATION). SOUS DES HYPOTHESES RELATIVES AUX DOMAINES DE RESISTANCE, CES PROBLEMES D'OPTIMISATION, AU DEPART SOUS CONDITIONS NON LINEAIRES, SONT RAMENES A DES PROBLEMES D'INFMAX SANS CONDITIONS AVEC UNE REDUCTION SIGNIFICATIVE DU NOMBRE DE VARIABLES. LEUR RESOLUTION EST BASEE SUR UNE METHODE DE REGULARISATION ORIGINALE, EFFECTUEE SUR UNE FONCTIONNELLE INDEPENDANTE DE L'OPERATEUR MAX.

Book excerpt: Preface Adhesion is a phenomenon architects and civil engineers are not very familiar with. In other disciplines knowledge about surface properties and the background of bonding energies is also far from satisfactory; nevertheless there are many important· applications in concrete engineering, where adhesion is necessary for success and durability. These include: - coating and painting - repair of concrete surfaces - bonding of fresh to old concrete - crack injection - glueing of precast elements - glueing of steel to concrete, etc. In 1981 RILEM established the technical committee 52-RAC 'Resin Adherence to Concrete'. The main aims of the committee's work were - to collect research results and practical experiences - to initiate and coordinate research programs - to develop, on a scientific base, test methods for field and for laboratory purposes. One of the results of the committee's work is a state-of-the-art report, which will be presented orally as a General Report at the International Symposium ISAP '86, and will be printed either in the RILEM journal Materials and Structures or separately. Several test recommendations have been elaborated and will be prepared as drafts for the participants ofISAP '86. These are: - direct tensile test - pull-off test - direct shear test - slant shear test - four-point bending test - dynamic loading test - thermal compatibility test (two versions) - injectibility test.

Book excerpt: Earthen architecture constitutes one of the most diverse forms of cultural heritage and one of the most challenging to preserve. It dates from all periods and is found on all continents but is particularly prevalent in Africa, where it has been a building tradition for centuries. Sites range from ancestral cities in Mali to the palaces of Abomey in Benin, from monuments and mosques in Iran and Buddhist temples on the Silk Road to Spanish missions in California. This volume's sixty-four papers address such themes as earthen architecture in Mali, the conservation of living sites, local knowledge systems and intangible aspects, seismic and other natural forces, the conservation and management of archaeological sites, research advances, and training.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is estimated that literally billions of residents in urban and peri-urban areas of Africa, Asia, and Latin America are served by onsite sanitation systems (e.g. various types of latrines and septic tanks). Until recently, the management of faecal sludge from these onsite systems has been grossly neglected, partially as a result of them being considered temporary solutions until sewer-based systems could be implemented. However, the perception of onsite or decentralized sanitation technologies for urban areas is gradually changing, and is increasingly being considered as long-term, sustainable options in urban areas, especially in low- and middle-income countries that lack sewer infrastructures. This is the first book dedicated to faecal sludge management. It compiles the current state of knowledge of the rapidly evolving field of faecal sludge management, and presents an integrated approach that includes technology, management, and planning based on Sandecs 20 years of experience in the field. Faecal Sludge Management: Systems Approach for Implementation and Operation addresses the organization of the entire faecal sludge management service chain, from the collection and transport of sludge, and the current state of knowledge of treatment options, to the final end use or disposal of treated sludge. The book also presents important factors to consider when evaluating and upscaling new treatment technology options. The book is designed for undergraduate and graduate students, and engineers and practitioners in the field who have some basic knowledge of environmental and/or wastewater engineering.

Book excerpt: Soils are affected by human activities, such as industrial, municipal and agriculture, that often result in soil degradation and loss. In order to prevent soil degradation and to rehabilitate the potentials of degraded soils, reliable soil data are the most important prerequisites for the design of appropriate land-use systems and soil management practices as well as for a better understanding of the environment. The availability of reliable information on soil morphology and other characteristics obtained through examination and description of the soil in the field is essential, and the use of a common language is of prime importance. These guidelines, based on the latest internationally accepted systems and classifications, provide a complete procedure for soil description and for collecting field data. To help beginners, some explanatory notes are included as well as keys based on simple test and observations.--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: Strategic health planning, the cornerstone of initiatives designed to achieve health improvement goals around the world, requires an understanding of the comparative burden of diseases and injuries, their corresponding risk factors and the likely effects of invervention options. The Global Burden of Disease framework, originally published in 1990, has been widely adopted as the preferred method for health accounting and has become the standard to guide the setting of health research priorities. This publication sets out an updated assessment of the situation, with an analysis of trends observed since 1990 and a chapter on the sensitivity of GBD estimates to various sources of uncertainty in methods and data.
