Book excerpt: The purpose of the book is to extend and develop the literature on foreign direct investment (FDI) and multinational corporation (MNCs) subsidiaries. There are several reasons for studying foreign investment and ownership. First, firms need to identify which host country industry factors are important in choosing among the various type of equity ownership (e.g. international joint ventures or wholly-owned subsidiary). Second, international diversification through foreign market entry can provide growth and profitability at rates unavailable in home markets. A third reason this warrants some attention is that type of ownership can affect attempts to counter international competition by engaging foreign rivals on their home turf. Fourth, firms have the option of choosing the appropriate equity ownership for international markets based on balancing their resources, capabilities, and international experience with their desire for ownership and control. This book extends the literature in FDI by providing empirical support for several theories and previously defined and/or tested constructs. For example, the parent and subsidiary's factors measured in this study suggest the importance of internalization and ownership advantages of Dunning's eclectic theory.

The author presents a comprehensive empirical research conducted at firm-level in the Turkish automotive industry. Using a representative sample of face-to-face in-depth interviews with top-executives and a survey of top level managers of domestic suppliers, the research analyzes the existence, channels, intensity and determinants, and the kind of transfers that occur at both inter- and intra-firm level in the industry. The author contends that policies aimed at attracting FDI flows should be re-examined under the findings and insights of this study since it is a necessary – although not sufficient - condition to have an efficient absorptive capacity level and/or skilled human capital stock in order to benefit from these flows. This study has policy implications for the automotive industry as well as practical recommendations for the public institutions and top-executives in emerging country companies and multinationals in order to conceive and implement science and technology policies in supporting the knowledge transfers.

The analysis determinate four main reasons for it: Improvement of vocational Training and Adult Training sector is one of the emergent sector priorities settled in governmental Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper and European Commission Feasibility Study as a precondition for cooperation between EU and Bosnia. Local competition in the area of Vocational and Adult Training is extremely weak (currently there are existing only 2 private companies similarly to RFH). Bosnian market offers enough potential customers which may use Vocational and Adult Training offers. These customers are local industry as well as students, scholars and unemployed people (Rate of unemployment in Bosnia amounts to 43%). A row of investment incentives and financial incentives are offered by European Union (EU), Bosnian government and Germany they reduce risks of FDI in Bosnia.
