Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sound contracts are an obvious necessity for an IT outsourcing relationship, but they are by far not the only prerequisite for achieving a truly successful relationship. Companies that establish successful outsourcing implement active relationship management in order to reach a good relationship quality. However, relationship quality as a central concept in IT outsourcing governance has not been thoroughly analyzed and applied yet, neither in scientific literature nor in practice. Stefan Blumenberg addresses these shortcomings and shows how relationship quality can be measured as a seven-dimensional construct and which are the crucial factors that are required to achieve high-quality relationships. Based on a case study series with 18 banks and their respective IT service providers in Germany, Blumenberg demonstrates that knowledge transfer mechanisms strongly influence relationship quality. Banks with clearly defined contact structures (e.g. retained organizations) and knowledge transfer mechanisms for exchanging implicit and explicit knowledge (e.g. trainings, job rotation) exhibit a good relationship quality and, as a result, achieve a successful outsourcing relationship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are three stages to outsourcing: The first occurred at the dawn of industrial era in the 19th century, where mass production for consumption by many, became the norm and simple domestic means could not meet such demands. With the cost of labor soaring in developed countries, manufacturing of products started moving to countries like China to take advantage of labor arbitrage in the 1900s. This is the second stage of outsourcing. This book addresses issues and challenges in the third stage of outsourcing whose focus is on movement of services at electronic speed, utilizing the Internet platform. The book includes short essay questions, multiple choice questions, mini-cases at the end of most chapters and glossary of terms. It can also serve as a good reference book for practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four years have been passed away since the first edition of this book has been published. While certain key issues on IS sourcing like determinants and application service provision have become more mature from an academic and industry perspective, additional topics have arisen on the horizon. In particular, offshoring and business process outsourcing have led to numerous insightful publications which offer a valuable and indispensable holistic sourcing persp- tive. Thus, the second edition of our outsourcing book deals with enduring themes, new perspectives, and global challenges. In addition to classical themes like Sourcing Determinants (Part I), Relationship Aspects (Part II), and Experiences (Part III), we felt it worthwhile to add three new parts. They cover information systems outsourcing from a Vendor and Individual Perspective (Part IV), Application Service Providing (Part V) as well as Offshoring and Global Outsoucing (Part VI). Again we have thoughtfully tried to arrange a compilation of contemporary outsourcing research as a primer and a platform for scientific discourse. In contrast to the first edition, this book is not the outcome of an International Conference, but rather an update of important and relevant perspectives. Since the Third International Conference on Outsourcing of Information Services will take place 2007 in Heidelberg, Germany, it may be considered as an epilogue for further interactions and discussions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the buying organizations' perspective on risks, relationships and success factors for accomplishing a successful IT Outsourcing (ITO). Today’s landscape in ITO is complex and these perspectives are important in ITO and therefore there is still a need for it to be further explored. Furthermore the studies concerned the risks, relationships and success factors in ITO need to be extended in more large companies from different countries to better understand how we could improve the ITO in these companies. In order to address this issue the authors of this book have performed different studies that span about 10 years concerning the risks, relationships and success factors in ITO in large companies in Sweden. The authors have focused on both theoretical and practical aspects concerning risks, relationships and success factors in ITO and they have used transaction cost theory, agency theory and core competency theory as main theories to support their research. The data concerning this study has been collected at two different times during the last 10 years with about five years' difference between them. In this way the performed research has enabled a comparison of the data collected on two different periods in time including of the related changes. The book will help researchers in ITO as well as practitioners like ITO decision makers in large companies to understand how to mitigate the ITO risks, improve their ITO relationships and identify the ITO success factors.
