Book Synopsis The Trouble with Islam by : Irshad Manji
Download or read book The Trouble with Islam written by Irshad Manji and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2004-01-16 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I have to be honest with you. Islam is on very thin ice with me....Through our screaming self-pity and our conspicuous silences, we Muslims are conspiring against ourselves. We're in crisis and we're dragging the rest of the world with us. If ever there was a moment for an Islamic reformation, it's now. For the love of God, what are we doing about it?" In blunt, provocative, and deeply personal terms, Irshad Manji unearths the troubling cornerstones of mainstream Islam today: tribal insularity, deep-seated anti-Semitism, and an uncritical acceptance of the Koran as the final, and therefore superior, manifesto of God. In this open letter to Muslims and non-Muslims alike, Manji asks arresting questions. "Who is the real colonizer of Muslims - America or Arabia? Why are we all being held hostage by what's happening between the Palestinians and the Israelis? Why are we squandering the talents of women, fully half of God's creation? What's our excuse for reading the Koran literally when it's so contradictory and ambiguous? Is that a heart attack you're having? Make it fast. Because if more of us don't speak out against the imperialists within Islam, these guys will walk away with the show." Manji offers a practical vision of how the United States and its allies can help Muslims undertake a reformation that empowers women, promotes respect for religious minorities, and fosters a competition of ideas. Her vision revives Islam's lost tradition of independent thinking. This book will inspire struggling Muslims worldwide to revisit the foundations of their faith. It will also compel non-Muslims to start posing the important questions without fear of being deemed "racists." In more ways than one, The Trouble with Islam is a clarion call for a fatwa-free future.

Book Synopsis New Queer Horror Film and Television by : Darren Elliott-Smith
Download or read book New Queer Horror Film and Television written by Darren Elliott-Smith and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology comprises essays that study the form, aesthetics and representations of LGBTQ+ identities in an emerging sub-genre of film and television termed ‘New Queer Horror’. This sub-genre designates horror crafted by directors/producers who identify as gay, bi, queer or transgendered, or works like Jeepers Creepers (2001), Let the Right One In (2008), Hannibal (2013–15), or American Horror Story: Coven (2013–14), which feature homoerotic or explicitly homosexual narratives with ‘out’ LGBTQ+ characters. Unlike other studies, this anthology argues that New Queer Horror projects contemporary anxieties within LGBTQ+ subcultures onto its characters and into its narratives, building upon the previously figurative role of Queer monstrosity in the moving image. New Queer Horror thus highlights the limits of a metaphorical understanding of queerness in the horror film, in an age where its presence has become unambiguous. Ultimately, this anthology aims to show that in recent years New Queer Horror has turned the focus of fear on itself, on its own communities and subcultures.

Book Synopsis Hollywood Highbrow by : Shyon Baumann
Download or read book Hollywood Highbrow written by Shyon Baumann and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's moviegoers and critics generally consider some Hollywood products--even some blockbusters--to be legitimate works of art. But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie "art." Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In Hollywood Highbrow, Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. Around the same time, European ideas about the director as artist, an easing of censorship, and the development of art-house cinemas, film festivals, and the academic field of film studies encouraged the idea that some American movies--and not just European ones--deserved to be considered art.

Book Synopsis Greetings from Delusionville by : Ron English
Download or read book Greetings from Delusionville written by Ron English and published by Last Gasp. This book was released on 2021-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ron English tells the story of Delusionville, a world where animals have different social status based on their species. This is Ron English's magnum opus, a subversive rock opera, featuring Ronnnie Rabbbit, A surreal cast of characters populates this paradise, including buzzards, pigs, sheep, turtles, ducks, wolves, and the "rabbbits" who are caught in the middle of all the insanity that is Delusionville. Ronnnie, the main rabbbit, is the only animal who tries to accept all contradictory belief systems, which has driven him completely insane. A collection of over 100 images set with lyrics. Greetings from Delusionville is a deluxe oversized hardcover coffee table book. "Rabbbits in Delusionville" is a rock opera that is like post-factual Animal Farm meets Aesop's Fables on LSD. Delusionville tells the story of a society that formed as different animals fell down a rabbbit hole and created a world with their own mythologies, religion, and politics. Every animal group represents an embedded archetype in the social structure that is about to come in question. This is largely a commentary on faux news, stagnation of social mobility, and downright delusional thinking. It is an opera in three acts: Act One - Introduces all of the characters in Delusionville and brings into question the nature of their society and their various places in the social order. Act Two - The animals get riled up about the economic disparity and social injustice in their previously unquestioned world of delusion. Act Three - A very unusual take on revolution.
