Book excerpt: Law, Rights and Ideology in Russia: Landmarks in the destiny of a great power brings into sharp focus several key episodes in Russia’s vividly ideological engagement with law and rights. Drawing on 30 years of experience of consultancy and teaching in many regions of Russia and on library research in Russian-language texts, Bill Bowring provides unique insights into people, events and ideas. The book starts with the surprising role of the Scottish Enlightenment in the origins of law as an academic discipline in Russia in the eighteenth century. The Great Reforms of Tsar Aleksandr II, abolishing serfdom in 1861 and introducing jury trial in 1864, are then examined and debated as genuine reforms or the response to a revolutionary situation. A new interpretation of the life and work of the Soviet legal theorist Yevgeniy Pashukanis leads to an analysis of the conflicted attitude of the USSR to international law and human rights, especially the right of peoples to self-determination. The complex history of autonomy in Tsarist and Soviet Russia is considered, alongside the collapse of the USSR in 1991. An examination of Russia’s plunge into the European human rights system under Yeltsin is followed by the history of the death penalty in Russia. Finally, the secrets of the ideology of ‘sovereignty’ in the Putin era and their impact on law and rights are revealed. Throughout, the constant theme is the centuries long hegemonic struggle between Westernisers and Slavophiles, against the backdrop of the Messianism that proclaimed Russia to be the Third Rome, was revived in the mission of Soviet Russia to change the world and which has echoes in contemporary Eurasianism and the ideology of sovereignty.

Book excerpt: From the #1 New York Times-bestselling author of The 48 Laws of Power comes the definitive new book on decoding the behavior of the people around you Robert Greene is a master guide for millions of readers, distilling ancient wisdom and philosophy into essential texts for seekers of power, understanding and mastery. Now he turns to the most important subject of all - understanding people's drives and motivations, even when they are unconscious of them themselves. We are social animals. Our very lives depend on our relationships with people. Knowing why people do what they do is the most important tool we can possess, without which our other talents can only take us so far. Drawing from the ideas and examples of Pericles, Queen Elizabeth I, Martin Luther King Jr, and many others, Greene teaches us how to detach ourselves from our own emotions and master self-control, how to develop the empathy that leads to insight, how to look behind people's masks, and how to resist conformity to develop your singular sense of purpose. Whether at work, in relationships, or in shaping the world around you, The Laws of Human Nature offers brilliant tactics for success, self-improvement, and self-defense.

How discovering the law of Destiny has helped to stop that challenge. So he realized that all that we go through in life are connected to us. For example, sickle cell people are always sick because they have the genotype SS. To become AA or stop falling sick as a sickler you have to connect with your inner man and around you. Also discussed are strategies to take the land back from the sea and reduce further coastal flooding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manifest Destiny, as a term for westward expansion, was not used until the 1840s. Its predecessor was the Doctrine of Discovery, a legal tradition by which Europeans and Americans laid legal claim to the land of the indigenous people that they discovered. In the United States, the British colonists who had recently become Americans were competing with the English, French, and Spanish for control of lands west of the Mississippi. Who would be the discoverers of the Indians and their lands, the United States or the European countries? We know the answer, of course, but in this book, Miller explains for the first time exactly how the United States achieved victory, not only on the ground, but also in the developing legal thought of the day. The American effort began with Thomas Jefferson's authorization of the Lewis & Clark Expedition, which set out in 1803 to lay claim to the West. Lewis and Clark had several charges, among them the discovery of a Northwest Passage—a land route across the continent—in order to establish an American fur trade with China. In addition, the Corps of Northwestern Discovery, as the expedition was called, cataloged new plant and animal life, and performed detailed ethnographic research on the Indians they encountered. This fascinating book lays out how that ethnographic research became the legal basis for Indian removal practices implemented decades later, explaining how the Doctrine of Discovery became part of American law, as it still is today.

Book excerpt: The Law of Attraction Get everything you want out of life through the power of your own mind. Imagine for a moment that you have in your possession a source of total and complete power. Only you can control the heat of the sun, the fall of rain, the change of tides, and the direction of winds. What would you do with this kind of power? Would you abuse it by causing the world to fall into total chaos? Would you be benevolent and merciful, using your power to help the people of your planet reach their full potential? Unfortunately (or fortunately, as the case may be) there is no way for a person to have so much power. Mother Nature controls the planetary systems according to her own rules and designs. You can never have absolute control over the environment in which you live. What if you could, however, have the power to determine the course of your own life? What if you could accomplish great things and acquire great riches only by using the power of your own mind? What if I told you that this doesn't have to be a "what if"? What if I told you that you have in your psyche the power to trace the course of the rest of your life by the path you consider appropriate? You most likely told me that I had obviously been watching too much science fiction and that I needed to leave home more often, not to mention my obvious need to expand my vocabulary, considering the number of times I have used the term "what if" in this conversation. You'd be wrong (about science fiction, anyway). Each person has in his mind the power to shape the events of his life to accomplish whatever end he deems appropriate. This power is what is known as the law of attraction. The belief held by many theorists is that the universe is governed by a set of universal laws; these laws cannot be changed, they cannot be broken, and they apply to every individual, regardless of age or nationality. These laws are the banks of the rivers that guide the flow of their lives on their journey to their ultimate end. The law of attraction is one of them. The law of attraction is the belief that anyone can determine their destiny through the power of their mind. "The Law of Attraction attracts all that you need, according to the nature of your thoughts. Your environment and your financial situation are the perfect reflection of your usual thought. Joseph Murphy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policy discourse in India tends to be dominated by assertions unsupported by facts, with the media indulging one and all without proper scrutiny. Often, the result is the creation and perpetuation of myths of all kinds. Thus, many believe today that poverty, illiteracy and ill-health afflict India because its leadership ignored them in favour of growth for its own sake; that the economic reforms that focused on growth have failed to help the poor, especially the socially disadvantaged; that any gains claimed in poverty alleviation derive from the use of progressively lower poverty lines; and that even if gains have been made, with one in two children suffering from malnutrition, reforms have done precious little to improve health outcomes. In this definitive book on economic reforms in India since Independence, Bhagwati and Panagariya decisively demolish these and other myths, which critics use as weapons to wound and maim the reforms. Using systematic data and analysis, they forcefully show that once the debris of critiques of India's reforms is cleared, it becomes evident that intensification of reforms - that allows sustained rapid growth - is the only way to lift millions out of poverty, illiteracy and ill-health. They argue that only growth can provide sufficient revenues for the provision of education and good health for the masses.

The theory of destiny states that we are born with a preplanned life chart and that we are submitted to it without any possibility of changing anything that was written. However, it is said that God gave man free will. So there is a hope that we can build around our destiny and improve it. This is where we use the constructive power of our mind to attract the wanted things and experiences in our life. Even though the principles of the law of attraction can be found anywhere on the internet and seem easy to understand at first. When you really want to apply them, you notice that it is not as simple as you expected. You find out that on an everyday basis you might run into personal barriers which prevent you from getting what you want. People who are not aware of the law of attraction don't know they have at hand a powerful tool which can help them in their everyday life. This book is meant to help people in the everyday practice of the Law of Attraction. It addresses the usual problems they run into when they need to set a goal/desire and raise their vibrations in order to attract the positive expected outcome.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the Internet erasing national borders? Will the future of the Net be set by Internet engineers, rogue programmers, the United Nations, or powerful countries? Who's really in control of what's happening on the Net? In this provocative new book, Jack Goldsmith and Tim Wu tell the fascinating story of the Internet's challenge to governmental rule in the 1990s, and the ensuing battles with governments around the world. It's a book about the fate of one idea--that the Internet might liberate us forever from government, borders, and even our physical selves. We learn of Google's struggles with the French government and Yahoo's capitulation to the Chinese regime; of how the European Union sets privacy standards on the Net for the entire world; and of eBay's struggles with fraud and how it slowly learned to trust the FBI. In a decade of events the original vision is uprooted, as governments time and time again assert their power to direct the future of the Internet. The destiny of the Internet over the next decades, argue Goldsmith and Wu, will reflect the interests of powerful nations and the conflicts within and between them. While acknowledging the many attractions of the earliest visions of the Internet, the authors describe the new order, and speaking to both its surprising virtues and unavoidable vices. Far from destroying the Internet, the experience of the last decade has lead to a quiet rediscovery of some of the oldest functions and justifications for territorial government. While territorial governments have unavoidable problems, it has proven hard to replace what legitimacy governments have, and harder yet to replace the system of rule of law that controls the unchecked evils of anarchy. While the Net will change some of the ways that territorial states govern, it will not diminish the oldest and most fundamental roles of government and challenges of governance. Well written and filled with fascinating examples, including colorful portraits of many key players in Internet history, this is a work that is bound to stir heated debate in the cyberspace community.
