Do you feel professionally unfulfilled? If you do, you are not alone. There is an army of people that look and act just like you. And if that describes you, then this story will be one of hope, if only to inspire you to survey your life, and make the necessary changes to elevate it. Together, we can manifest great change in your life. Winston Churchill said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” Our story will be one of courage—the courage to take great risk to find great reward.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the design and optimization of computer networks applying a rigorous optimization methodology, applicable to any network technology. It is organized into two parts. In Part 1 the reader will learn how to model network problems appearing in computer networks as optimization programs, and use optimization theory to give insights on them. Four problem types are addressed systematically – traffic routing, capacity dimensioning, congestion control and topology design. Part 2 targets the design of algorithms that solve network problems like the ones modeled in Part 1. Two main approaches are addressed – gradient-like algorithms inspiring distributed network protocols that dynamically adapt to the network, or cross-layer schemes that coordinate the cooperation among protocols; and those focusing on the design of heuristic algorithms for long term static network design and planning problems. Following a hands-on approach, the reader will have access to a large set of examples in real-life technologies like IP, wireless and optical networks. Implementations of models and algorithms will be available in the open-source Net2Plan tool from which the user will be able to see how the lessons learned take real form in algorithms, and reuse or execute them to obtain numerical solutions. An accompanying link to the author’s own Net2plan software enables readers to produce numerical solutions to a multitude of real-life problems in computer networks (www.net2plan.com).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American author Kurt Vonnegut has famously declared that writing is unteachable, yet formal education persists in that task. Teaching Writing as Journey, Not Destination is the culmination of P.L. Thomas’s experiences as both a writer and a teacher of writing reaching into the fourth decade of struggling with both. This volume collects essays that examine the enduring and contemporary questions facing writing teachers, including grammar instruction, authentic practices in high-stakes environments, student choice, citation and plagiarism, the five-paragraph essay, grading, and the intersections of being a writer and teaching writing. Thomas offers concrete classroom experiences drawn from teaching high school ELA, first-year composition, and a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses. Ultimately, however, the essays are a reflection of Thomas’s journey and a concession to both writing and teaching writing as journeys without ultimate destinations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite significant investment of funds, time, and effort in bringing computers, the Internet, and related technologies into our classrooms, educators have turned their back on these new power tools of the intellect. School is the last remaining institution to keep 21st Century technology at arms distance. How can technology be used to enrich and enhance traditional approaches to instruction? How does it move teaching into new territory? What actions need to be taken in order to successfully transform our schools to effective, technology-supported learning environments? Why has this happened and what can be done to reverse it? Recapturing Technology for Education answers these questions. It re-establishes the legitimacy and urgency of tapping technology to make our schools relevant and effective once again. This book explores the reasons why educators have resisted making the leap to a technology-supported brand of teaching and learning, and it will provide an education worthy of 21st Century children. Includes: Interviews and quotes of experts in the field, References, reviews, and recommendations of free resources available to educators. Written for both education professionals and lay persons, it will also be useful to all who are interested in understanding Instructional Technology and unleashing its potential to positively impact.
