And when he is about to lose his prestigious and profitable career, along with his marriage, and even his life? The answer would have been certain tragedy for Alan Medinger if not for a praying wife and the mercy of God. Restored and inspired, he went on to establish a ministry for same-sex-attracted people (Regeneration of Baltimore, Maryland), where he and his wife, Willa, influenced hundreds to turn from homosexuality and seek holiness. Through their work with Exodus International, they influenced thousands more. When quarrels and dissension affected Exodus in Alan’s last years, he predicted its demise and explained how ministries would continue to succeed without it. Through Alan and Willa Medinger’s story in By God’s Design, you will learn the truth about homosexuality, its causes, its healing, and how the church can help.

Book excerpt: "Biophilia" is the term coined by Edward O. Wilson, author of The Diversity of Life and winner of two Pulitzer prizes, to describe what he believes is our innate affinity for the natural world. In his landmark book Biophilia, he examined how our tendency to focus on life and lifelike processes might be a biologically based need, integral to our development as individuals and as a species. The idea has caught the imagination of diverse thinkers. The Biophilia Hypothesis brings together the views of some of the most creative scientists of our time, each attempting to amplify and refine the concept of biophilia. The various perspectives - psychological, biological, cultural, symbolic, and aesthetic - frame the theoretical issues by presenting empirical evidence that supports or refutes the hypothesis. Numerous examples illustrate the idea that biophilia and its converse, biophobia, have a genetic component: people develop fear and even full-blown phobias of snakes and spiders with very little negative reinforcement, while more threatening modern artifacts - knives, guns, automobiles - rarely elicit such a response; people would rather look at water, green vegetation, or flowers than built structures of glass and concrete; and the development of language, myth, and thought appears to be greatly dependent on the use of natural symbols, particularly animals. The biophilia hypothesis, if substantiated, provides a powerful argument for the conservation of biological diversity. More important, it implies serious consequences for our well-being as society becomes further estranged from the natural world. Relentless environmental destruction could have a significant impact on our quality of life, not just materially but psychologically and even spiritually.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SYNOPSIS This book is the product of a lifetime of study, practice, and observation of design focused upon a considerate reaction to various issues that have emerged over the past 10 years. It is circumscribed by current experiences of teaching and observations of practice and administration from the point of view of an experienced practitioner transplanted to academia. With a wide worldview and often tongue in cheek, free commentary is offered on design issues and the context of their application and exploration. The book thematic is not focused on being a design treatise but rather upon offering an analytical argument about conditions and dynamics often seen as deleterious to design outcome and educational success. The passionate engagement of the author with design and its educational context as well as an active dialogue with local community by way of a newspaper voice serve well to present a discussion that is both informed and energetic.
