This factor is particularly important when a person has a high a ctivity level and is subjected to heat stress. Although human body models have b een developed with ventilation models, they were mostly based on empirical corre lations for convection in the air layer. In this work, detailed theoretical mode ling of the effect of ventilation on the clothing thermal system was derived. Th e results of the model provided an assessment tool of the affect of clothed human rigorous motion of th e human in relation to occupant thermal comfort. In this thesis, a two- dimensional and three- dimensional thermal models of clot hing ventilation systems were developed. Unlike previous models, these models we re based on thermal principles instead of empirical equations to make these mode ls flexible and practically useful. The 3- D model of microclimate is based on i nertia force Womersley flow in axial and polar directions, while the radial dire ction is lumped using Ghali et al. (2002) normal periodic flow model. The new 3- D model provides a solution of the induced flow due to periodic motion of an in ner cylinder surrounded by an outer cylinder. The outer cylinder represents a po rous fabric. The inner cylinder is solid and represents the skin. The unsteady m ass and energy conservation equations are solved for both the microclimate flow and the air penetrating through the fabric. Results have shown that the presence of open apertures reduces the heat loss from the skin compared with closed aper tures. These results were consistent with published empirical data on highly per meable fabrics. These models can predict the sensible and latent heat loss in di fferent clothing systems. The results are analyzed and were consistent with prev iously published empirical data. Such information would be invaluable in optimiz ing clothing design for comfort in various settings such as for athletes, stage performers and dancers.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to investigate the use of indirect measurement systems for determining garment ventilation in structural firefighter turnout suits. Clothing ventilation designs were implemented in firefighter turnouts to determine the benefit of ventilation toward heat loss. Ventilated turnout suits were assessed for heat loss improvement, compared to a standard control, using sweating mannequin testing methodologies. For this research, a comprehensive ventilation study was conducted using ASTM standards to determine the effectiveness of ventilation designs in structural firefighter turnouts. Ventilation designs were tested on a sweating thermal mannequin while standing and moving, with and without wind. Both thermal and evaporative resistance measurements were taken according to ASTM F1291-10 and ASTM F2370-10. A predicted total heat loss (THL) value was calculated from these measurements as an indication of ventilation performance of each design. Analysis of the data included alternative methodologies such as a heat loss ratio calculation to map the improvement in THL across all zones of the sweating mannequin and estimated ventilation calculations per the traditional direct measurement method for determining clothing ventilation. The relationship between THL values and predicted ventilation rates was examined. Results from this study will be used to design state-of-the-art prototypes as part of the revolutionary modern turnout suit project at North Carolina State University.
