Book excerpt: This thesis starts with a discussion of different classes of operation of power amplifiers (PAs). Comparing advantages and disadvantages of these classes, class AB is chosen as the best initial candidate for the design of broadband PA. Different methods for design of matching networks are first discussed. Some of them fall into the group of narrowband matching networks, while others are suitable for a broadband context. Broadband design methodologies are categorized into two groups of real-to-real transformations and complex-to-real transformations. Complex-to-real transformations are the most useful methods for this project, since design of power amplifiers deals with complex loads rather than just real loads. The design of broadband matching networks exploiting filter theory is presented in this thesis for synthesizing broadband and highly efficient power amplifiers (PAs). Starting with sets of optimum impedances over the targeted frequency band, the matching networks are designed using a systematic approach. The effects of load termination at the 2nd and 3rd harmonic on the PA performance (efficiency) are studied. The significance of proper termination, especially at the 2nd harmonic, is highlighted. To prevent further complication of the design process, though, specific harmonic termination (stubs) is avoided and special arrangement of the matching network (position of the bias network) is preferred, as it is found to lead to acceptable efficiency. Two PA prototypes were designed with the proposed methodology using 25W GaN devices. The designs targeted two frequency bands: 1.8 to 2.2 GHz (20% BW) and 1.8 to 2.7 GHz (40% BW). For the former, drain efficiency (DE) of 70% (+/-5%) and output power of 45.5 dBm (+/- 1.0dB) was measured while the latter achieved very promising efficiency of about 60% over the entire bandwidth.

Book excerpt: As modern communication system technology develops, the demand for devices with smaller size, higher efficiency, and larger bandwidth has increased dramatically. To achieve this purpose, a novel architecture of load modulated balanced amplifier (LMBA) with a unique load-modulation characteristic different from any existing LMBAs and Doherty power amplifiers (DPAs) was presented, which is named as Pseudo-Doherty LMBA (PD-LMBA). Based on a special combination of control amplifier (carrier) and balanced amplifier (peaking) together with proper phase and amplitude controls, an optimal load-modulation behavior can be achieved for PD-LMBA leading to maximized efficiency over extended power back-off range. More importantly, the efficiency optimization can be achieved with only a static setting of phase offset at a given frequency, which greatly simplifies the complexity for phase control. Furthermore, the co-operations of the carrier and peaking amplifiers in PD-LMBA are fully de-coupled, thus lifting the fundamental bandwidth barrier imposed on Doherty-based active load modulation.

Book excerpt: The modern wireless communication systems require modulated signals with wide modulation bandwidth. This, in turns, requires signals with very high dynamic range and peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). This means that the amplifier in the base-station has to work at a power back-off as large as the dynamic range of the signal, so that the amplifier has a high linearity in this region. For the standard single-stage amplifiers, this large power back-off reduces the efficiency dramatically. In this work, a three-way Doherty power amplifier (DPA) aiming at high power efficiency within a dynamic range of 9.5 dB, is designed and fabricated using partitioning design approach. The partitioning design approach decomposes a complex design task into small-sized, well-controllable, and verifiable subcircuits. This advanced straight forward method has shown very promising results. Using this design approach, a three-way DPA has been designed to demonstrate the advantages of this reliable design technique as well. Based on the design of a single-stage power amplifier and proposing a novel output power combiner, a 6 W three-way DPA has been designed which allows the mandatory load modulation principle in three-way DPA structures to be realized with simpler elements, whereas the design of a standard Doherty combiner would have been very challenging and not practical due to the extremely small value of its characteristic line impedance. The proposed combiner is calculated for a three-way DPA with 2-mm AlGaN/GaN-HEMTs. The simulation result shows a very good load modulation for the amplifier, which confirms the theoretical expectation for a three-way DPA. The efficiency of the designed 6 W three-way DPA at large back-off shows very promising values compared to recently reported amplifiers. The measured IMD3 products confirm the good linearity of the amplifier as well. Accordingly, the proposed power combiner and the design strategy are recommended to be used as the preferred option for designing three-way DPA structures with very high output power.

Book excerpt: Highly Linear Integrated Wideband Amplifiers: Design and Analysis Techniques for Frequencies from Audio to RF deals with the complicated issues involved in the design of high-linearity integrated wideband amplifiers for different operating frequencies. The book demonstrates these principles using a number of high-performance designs. New topologies for high linearity are presented, as well as a novel method for estimating the intermodulation distortion of a wideband signal. One of the most exciting results presented is an enhanced feedback configuration called feedback boosting that is capable of very low distortion. Also important is a statistical method for relating the intermodulation distortion of a wideband signal to the total harmonic distortion (THD) of a single tone. The THD, as opposed to the intermodulation distortion of the wideband signal, is easy to measure and use as a design parameter. Three different applications where high linearity is needed are identified, namely audio power amplifiers, wideband IF amplifiers and RF power amplifiers. For these applications high-performance integrated amplifier designs using novel topologies are presented together with measurement results. The audio amplifiers are built in CMOS and are capable of driving 8Omega loudspeaker loads directly without using any external components. One of the designs can operate on a supply voltage down to 1.5V. Both bipolar and CMOS wideband IF amplifiers are built; they are fully differential and have linearity from DC to 20 MHz. Finally, an RF power amplifier is built in CMOS, without using inductors, in order to investigate what performance can be achieved without them. Highly Linear Integrated Wideband Amplifiers: Design and Analysis Techniques for Frequencies from Audio to RF is an excellent reference for researchers and designers of integrated amplifiers, and may be used as a text for advanced courses on the topic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The power amplifier is one of the most important and crucial component of the wireless networks due to its high power consumption. For this reason, in the last 20-30 years many scientists from all around the world have addressed the issue of how minimising such power consumption, which means maximising the PA efficiency as well as gain while delivering the expected power and the appropriate linearity for the specified frequency. Nowadays due to the continuous demand of wireless services, PAs with high power-efficiency for the specified narrow band frequency are not enough. Such PAs have to be capable to deliver satisfactory output performance for the wide spectrum frequency. For this reason, the work presented in this thesis is focused around the PA stage and describes a new way to design broadband power amplifiers used in the wireless communication systems. For the first time this work presents what have been termed "Continuous Modes". It is known that for delivering high efficiency states, output high harmonic impedances must be taken into account. However, the knowledge of where such harmonic terminations should be once found the singular optimum fundamental load would deliver the high efficiency condition but will not reveal information in terms of bandwidth. In this work it is demonstrated that if varying the reactive part of the fundamental impedance from the optimum condition and adjusting reactively the high harmonic terminations in accordance with the Continuous theory applied to the different PA classes, a new "Design Space" where the output performance remains theoretically constant can be achieved. Furthermore, varying both reactively and resistively the fundamental load and again adjusting the magnitude and phase of the high harmonic terminations a yet wider design space would be revealed with the output performance slightly degraded from the optimum condition but still giving satisfactory performance. The degradation of such performance is balanced to the fact that now new alternative solutions are revealed allowing more flexibility in the PA design. Now the PA designer can decide which new impedances to target if designing narrow band PAs or he can decide to target more solutions for which broadband PAs can be realised. Broadband Continuous PAs - Vincenzo Carrubba - xii The research presented in this thesis shows the theoretical Continuous Mode theory applied to the various PA classes supported by experimental measurement results using the Waveform Engineering Time Domain Active Envelope Load-Pull system developed at Cardiff University applied to different transistors technology and sizes. Besides, a Continuous Class-FV PA delivering around 10.5 W of average power, 11 dB of average gain and 65-80% of drain efficiency for an octave bandwidth between 0.55 GHz and 1.1 GHz has been designed and realised.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to meet the increasing demand for higher data rates while maximizing spectral efficiency, modern wireless communication systems transmit complex non-constant envelope modulation signals with high peak-to-average ratio (PAPR). As a result, conventional power amplifiers must be operated in back-off, leading to a significant efficiency reduction. Various power amplifier architectures (i.e. Doherty, outphasing, and envelope tracking) have been demonstrated to achieve high efficiency for these high PAPR signals. Unlike the other architectures, the envelope tracking power amplifier (ETPA) makes an excellent candidate for multi-band multi-frequency use, while maintaining high efficiency for high PAPR and under average power back-off, as it is fundamentally immune to changes in the frequency of the carrier; it depends only on the envelope of the RF signal. This dissertation focuses on the design of envelope tracking power amplifiers for enabling broadband wireless communication systems. First, a test-bench for evaluating broadband ETPAs is described. A calibration routine, acting as a pre-equalizer, is used to achieve a flat linear response over the entire instantaneous bandwidth of the system, resulting in less than 1% EVM for a 40 MHz LTE signal. Performances of envelope tracking power amplifiers on this test-bench at various frequencies from UHF to millimeter-wave are evaluated, and record efficiencies are demonstrated. Next, this dissertation describes how in under practical usage, the power transmitted fluctuates as a function of the load demands over time. The long-term efficiency of the ETPA is evaluated using Monte-Carlo simulations based on a projected time-varying power profile. Compared to a Doherty PA with the same peak efficiency, the ETPA can provide more than 1.4x reduction in overall energy consumed. The ETPA thus provides significant opportunities for system energy savings under realistic operation. Thirdly, to accommodate the wide range of carrier frequencies required for numerous emerging wireless systems, a multi-octave RFPA based on a compact GaN stacked IC with RC feedback is designed, fabricated, and evaluated. Multi-octave ET operation was demonstrated from 500 to 1750 MHz with >25% efficiency. Compared to its constant drain voltage counterpart, >2x improvement in RFPA efficiency is observed in ET. Lastly, while the ETPA provides advantages such as broad carrier bandwidths and high efficiency under back-off operation, one of the main challenges in ETPA design lies in accommodating wide modulation bandwidths. Adaptive de-troughing, a digital signal processing approach for extending the modulation bandwidth capability of an existing dynamic power supply, is described and evaluated. Measurements demonstrated the ability to extend ET operation to 20 MHz LTE signals. In addition, ~5-6% modulator efficiency enhancement was measured when comparing "standard" to "adaptive" de-troughing supply waveforms.
