This book introduces various autostereoscopic technologies, from the fundamental principles of the parallax-barrier method to the latest multi-projection, super multi-view displays. Display basics and fundamentals of 3D displays are presented first, followed by descriptions of multi-view system configurations. Because the technological advancement of conventional 2D display affects the development of 3D displays, the book also covers the basics of 2D displays, including flat panel and projection-type displays. For readers with some knowledge of 3D display technologies, detailed explanations of advanced display technologies such as the slanted lens technique and multi-projection system are also included. The book is suitable for readers ranging from undergraduate students to display manufacturers in the industry.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "An autostereoscopic display provides the viewer with a three-dimensional image without the need for special glasses, and allows the user to 'look around' objects in the image by moving the head left- right. The time-multiplexed autostereo display developed at the University of Cambridge has been in operation since late 1991. An autostereoscopic camera system has been designed and implemented. It is capable of taking video input from up to sixteen cameras, and multiplexing these into a video output stream with a pixel rate an order of magnitude faster than the individual input streams. Testing of the system with eight cameras and a Cambridge Autostereo Display has produced excellent live autostereoscopic video. This report describes the design of this camera system which has been successfully implemented and demonstrated. Problems which arose during this process are discussed, and a comparison with similar systems made."

(DTI) developed a prototype display that uses a proprietary illumination technique to create autostereoscopic hologram-like full resolution images on an LCD operating at 180 fps. The resulting 3D image possesses a resolution equal to that of the LCD along with properties normally associated with holograms, including change of perspective with observer position and lack of viewing position restrictions. Furthermore, this autostereoscopic technique eliminates the need to wear special glasses to achieve the parallax effect. Under the program a prototype display was developed which demonstrates the hologram-like full resolution concept. To implement such a system, DTI explored various concept designs and enabling technologies required to support those designs. Specifically required were: a parallax illumination system with sufficient brightness and control; an LCD with rapid address and pixel response; and an interface to an image generation system for creation of computer graphics. Of the possible parallax illumination system designs, we chose a design which utilizes an array of fluorescent lamps. This system creates six sets of illumination areas to be imaged behind an LCD. This controlled illumination array is interfaced to a lenticular lens assembly which images the light segments into thin vertical light lines to achieve the parallax effect. This light line formation is the foundation of DTI's autostereoscopic technique. The David Sarnoff Research Center (Sarnoff) was subcontracted to develop an LCD that would operate with a fast scan rate and pixel response. Sarnoff chose a surface mode cell technique and produced the world's first large area pi-cell active matrix TFT LCD. The device provided adequate performance to evaluate five different perspective stereo viewing zones. A Silicon Graphics' Iris Indigo system was used for image generation which allowed for static and dynamic multiple perspective image rendering. Du...

Book excerpt: U.S. Army Tank-Automotive Command (TACOM) researchers are in the early stages of developing an autostereoscopic, 3-D holographic visual display system. The present system uses holographic optics, low and high-resolution projectors, and computer workstation graphics to achieve real-time, 3-D user-interactivity. This system is being used to conduct 3-D visual perception studies for the purpose of understanding the effects of 3-D in military target visual detection and as an alternative technique to CAD model visualization. The authors describe the present system configuration, operation, some of the technical limitations encountered during the system development, and the results of a human perception test that compared subject response times, hit rates and miss rates of visual detection when subjects used conventional 2-D methods versus the 3-D holographic image produced by the holographic display system. The results of this study revealed that 3D HOE system increased the perception of accuracy of moving vehicles. This research has provided some insights into which technology will be the best for presenting 3-D simulated objects to subjects or designers in the laboratory.

As examples, we witness the emergence of curved, volumetric, head-mounted, autostereoscopic, or transparent displays, among others, with more complex sensors and algorithms that enable sophisticated interactions. This thesis aims at contributing to the creation of such novel displays. In three concrete projects, we combine both optical and software tools to address specific applications with the ultimate goal of designing a three-dimensional display. Each of these projects led to the development of a working prototype based on the use of picoprojectors, cameras, optical elements, and custom software. In a first project, we investigated spherical displays: they are more suitable for visualizing spherical data than regular flat 2D displays, however, existing solutions are costly and difficult to build due to the requirement of tailored optics. We propose a low-cost multitouch spherical display that uses only off-the-shelf, low-cost, and 3D-printed elements to make it more accessible and reproducible. Our solution uses a focus-free projector and an optical system to cover a sphere from the inside, infrared finger tracking for multitouch interaction, and custom software to link both. We leverage the use of low-cost material by software calibrations and corrections. We then extensively studied wedge-shaped light guides, in which we see great potential and that became the center component of the rest of our work. Such light guides were initially devised for flat and compact projection-based displays but in this project we exploit them in a context of acquisition. We seek to image constrained locations that are not easily accessible with regular cameras due to the lack of space in front of the object of interest. Our idea is to fold the imaging distance into a wedge guide thanks to prismatic elements. With our prototype, we validated various applications in the archaeological field. The skills and expertise that we acquired during both projects allowed us to design a new transparent autostereoscopic display. Our solution overcomes some limitations of augmented reality displays allowing a user to see both a direct view of the real world as well as a stereoscopic and view-dependent augmentation without any wearable or tracking. The principle idea is to use a wedge light guide, a holographic optical element, and several projectors, each of them generating a different viewpoint. Our current prototype has five viewpoints, and more can be added. This new display has a wide range of potential applications in the augmented reality field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research covered in this thesis encompasses a consideration of 3D television requirements and a survey of stereoscopic and autostereoscopic methods. This confirms that although there is a lot of activity in this area, very little of this work could be considered suitable for television. The principle of operation, design of the components of the optical system and evaluation of two EU-funded (MUTED & HELIUM3D projects) glasses-free (autostereoscopic) displays is described. Four iterations of the display were built in MUTED, with the results of the first used in designing the second, third and fourth versions. The first three versions of the display use two-49 element arrays, one for the left eye and one for the right. A pattern of spots is projected onto the back of the arrays and these are converted into a series of collimated beams that form exit pupils after passing through the LCD. An exit pupil is a region in the viewing field where either a left or a right image is seen across the complete area of the screen; the positions of these are controlled by a multi-user head tracker. A laser projector was used in the first two versions and, although this projector operated on holographic principles in order to obtain the spot pattern required to produce the exit pupils, it should be noted that images seen by the viewers are not produced holographically so the overall display cannot be described as holographic. In the third version, the laser projector is replaced with a conventional LCOS projector to address the stability and brightness issues discovered in the second version. In 2009, true 120Hz displays became available; this led to the development of a fourth version of the MUTED display that uses 120Hz projector and LCD to overcome the problems of projector instability, produces full-resolution images and simplifies the display hardware. HELIUM3D: A multi-user autostereoscopic display based on laser scanning is also described in this thesis. This display also operates by providing head-tracked exit pupils. It incorporates a red, green and blue (RGB) laser illumination source that illuminates a light engine. Light directions are controlled by a spatial light modulator and are directed to the users' eyes via a front screen assembly incorporating a novel Gabor superlens. In this work is described that covered the development of demonstrators that showed the principle of temporal multiplexing and a version of the final display that had limited functionality; the reason for this was the delivery of components required for a display with full functionality.
