Book excerpt: Threat-based tank gunnery performance testing procedures were developed using a seven-step process that included (a) describing the tank gunnery domain, (b) determining several test requirements, (c) analyzing gunnery outcome (speed and accuracy) measures and developing a recommended approach, (d) analyzing gunnery process measures (e.g., target acquisition, fire commands) and developing a recommended approach, (e) setting standards, (f) analyzing devices and making recommendations, and (g) developing test administration procedures. The test comprises (a) crew and platoon skill echelons, (b) Combat Tank Tables and threat-based target arrays, and (c) live fire and instrumented dry fire. After reviewing several alternatives, the hit expectation ratio metric that underlies Tank Table VIII was identified as the most conceptually complete outcome metric available. A spreadsheet format was prepared for extending the calculation of hit expectation ratio for crew gunnery for three, four, and five threat targets in an array. The mathematics of a suggested solution for calculating a platoon gunnery hit expectation ratio were presented. To support assessment of the behaviors and activities of crew and platoon gunnery, a series of descriptive rating scales were developed.

Book excerpt: Individual and crew tests are necessary to support XM1 tank gunnery goals and to reduce ammunition expenditures by assuring proficiency before progression to full crew performance exercises. This research was focused on developing diagnostic tests for individual crewman and crew performance evaluations for crew drills that are administerable at platoon level within four hours and do not involve live fire. Nineteen individual tests were developed and remediation guidance was developed that is centered on immediate correction of specific deficiencies. For crew performance, the 14 Crew Drills contained in ARI Research Product 79-17, A Prototype Crew Drills Training Program for XM1 Tank Gunnery: Company Commander's Manual, were analyzed and three drills were selected that best represent the range of gunnery behavior. Tests were developed for those three drills and remediation guidelines were prepared that focus on crew performance. Supporting material for platoon leaders and tank commanders who serve as scorers was also developed. The testing material to be issued in the unit is included as an appendix.

This book was released on 1990 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this report was to develop and apply methods for identifying training objectives for threat engagement scenarios derived in previous research. Rational methods were used to identify a list of crew- and platoon-level subtasks to serve as training objectives. A review against existing task documentation revealed that the list was a comprehensive collection of gunnery behaviors. Cluster analyses reduced the numerous crew-level subtasks to eight categories that differed with respect to fidelity requirements, functional subgoal, and skill requirements. These subtask categories were named: a) Manipulation of gun controls, b) Tank commander engagement control procedures, c) Target acquisition, d) Immediate action, e) Switch setting procedures, f) Fire commands/reports, g) Degraded modes, and h) Maneuver tank. Crossindexing of subtasks to threat engagement scenarios in which they might be trained revealed a difference between individual/crew and collective subtasks: While most individual and crew subtasks could be trained in all or nearly all threat engagement scenarios, most collective subtasks were associated with some but not other scenarios. The researchers concluded that the threat scenario conditions (e.g., hardware conditions) were more important for determining whether individual and crew subtasks could be trained. Book excerpt: "Based on the analysis of gunnery scores fired by 171 M1A2 tank crews, an easy-to-use strategy was developed for predicting which crews will, and will not, first-run qualify on Tank Table VIII before all of the typically required ten engagements have been fired. Scores are added as each engagement is fired and the resulting sum is compared to tabular formatted cutoff scores established to support accurate qualification predictions. Adherence to this strategy will help Active Army armor unit commanders to maximize the efficiency of tank gunnery evaluation by reducing the number of first-run engagements fired, as well as the range time and operational tempo (OPTEMPO) resources spent in doing so, by roughly 20% without sacrificing the purpose and intent of the crew-level gunnery certification process."--DTIC.

Book excerpt: Automated devices can potentially measure the processes as well as results of armor crew performance. This research analyzed a sample of three tank gunnery engagements in order to (1) identify the stimuli and overt responses in a sample of gunnery tasks; (2) identify and rank-order the response groups, overt responses, and enabling skills for each duty position in the sample engagements; and (3) write prototype measurement specifications for a sample of those response groups, overt responses, and enabling skills. The decisions and overt responses of each crew member for the sampled tasks were displayed in several sets of flow diagrams. Methods for sorting overt responses into groups and for inferring enabling skills were based on three considerations: perception of initiating stimuli, recall of procedures or rules, and motor behavior. These methods yielded a four-tiered behavior hierarchy for each duty position for each engagement. Measures of crewmen's performance at all levels of the hierarchy would permit (a) troubleshooting performance sequences by backtracking scores top to bottom through the hierarchy; (b) testing sequentially from bottom to top; and (c) predicting performance in higher instructional units from scores on lower units. Measurement specifications were written for the response groups, overt responses, and enabling skills in a main gun precision engagement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research was undertaken to develop a model live-fire test that can be used to evaluate tank crew proficiency in neutralizing targets. The model test takes into consideration different types of target engagements, the behaviors of the individual crew members that are required and the practical constraints associated with the use of main gun ammunition for testing purposes. Existing descriptions of M60A1A0S gunnery objectives were reviewed and updated to reflect current US Army Armor School doctrine. The revised set of objectives provided a definition of the possible ways that the tank system could neutralize targets with the 105mm gun, the coaxial machinegun and the .50 caliber machinegun. The objectives also made explicit the behaviors required on the part of individual crew members during each engagement. Given a definition of the performance domain, two steps were undertaken to aid in the selection of objectives or exercises that would constitute the model gunnery test. First, all objectives were systematically examined to identify possible groups or families of objectives that were similar to one another in terms of the underlying crew behaviors involved. Families were further analyzed to generate estimates of the extent to which performance on one gunnery objective was predictive of performance on other objectives in the same family. These results, when coupled with other considerations such as the number of main gun rounds available for testing, were then used to identify a representative sample of test engagements that would yield information about crew performance on the entire domain of gunnery objectives. Issues involved in the generation and interpretation of performance test scores were also addressed.

Book excerpt: The specific objectives of this research were to evaluate the relationship between gunner's and tank commander's: (1) scores on a series of potentially predictive paper-and-pencil tests and main-gun Tank Table performance; (2) intermediate tank gunnery training task performance and main-gun Tank Table performance; (3) composite scores and their performance on the main-gun Tank Tables ; and (4) to evaluate the relationship between aptitude test scores and driver performance as measured by driver's ranking within their platoon.
