Book excerpt: Validation of compressor aerodynamic design can be obtained through in-engine testing with considerable investment of time and money, or in rig testing, wherein a range of interchangeable designs can be tested without exposure to effects of other engine components. To more rapidly explore centrifugal and mixed-flow compressor designs for small, thrust-producing aviation gas-turbine engines, called turbojets, the Air ForceResearch Laboratories (AFRL) initiated development of a test apparatus to be integrated into an existing test facility at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB). Design of the inlet flow conditioning and measuring system, mechanical systems, exhaust discharge valve, and exhaust collector is accomplished through sizing calculations, aerodynamic and mechanical analysis. This thesis project presents the final design of this small-turbojet compressor test facility, capable of testing virtually the entire operating map of compressors in the desired size range. Fabrication of the test rig is underway as of the conclusion of this thesis; component testing, assembly, and initial test article testing is planned thereafter.

Book excerpt: Test Devices, Inc. has completed the preliminary design for the Portable Static Test Facility (PSTF) for small, expendable, turbojet engines (50 - 1000 lb thrust) as part of the Phase I effort under SBIR contract DAAH01-94-C- RO32. The goal of providing a preliminary design for a development and test facility at a reasonable cost, assembled from standard, transportable modules and requiring minimum setup was achieved. During the Phase I activities a detailed analysis was performed that covered the description of engines to be tested, engine test procedures, general test specifications, test facility requirements and design considerations, installation, and engine control and test data requirements. From this a preliminary design for the portable test facility was prepared, plus a conceptual installation design and a preliminary design for the engine control and data system. Turbojet engine testing, Engine test cell, Static test facility, Engine control system, Expendable jet engine, Test cell instrumentation.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique counter-rotating aspirated compressor was tested in a blowdown facility at the Gas Turbine Laboratory at MIT. The facility expanded on experience from previous blowdown turbine and blowdown compressor experiments. Advances in thermocouple and facility designs enabled efficiency estimates through total temperature and total pressure measurements. The facility was designed to provide at least 100 ms of available test time, approximately a factor of five greater than previous blowdown compressor facilities. The adiabatic core efficiency of the compressor was estimated with an uncertainty of 0.8% and the corrected flow was estimated with an uncertainty of 1.0%. The compressor was tested at several operating conditions and two speed lines were partially mapped. The maximum measured total pressure ratio across the two stages was 3.02 to 1. The measured adiabatic efficiency for that point was 0.885. The span-wise total pressure, total temperature, and efficiency profiles were compared to the predicted profiles for runs with the corrected speeds of the two rotors at 90% of design and 100% design. There appears to be reasonable agreement between the predictions and the measurements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was made to define functional requirements and establish design criteria for a new compressor research test facility. The program resulted in the selection of a facility configuration along with recommendations for implementing its design and construction. It was found that a facility capable of testing all future fans and compressors would not be economically attractive. The initial design of the facility should be for open cycle operation with an eventual expansion to closed cycle operation. The recommended closed cycle design makes maximum use of existing equipment while providing a wide range of operational capability. Cost tradeoff studies also favored the recommended configuration. A digital simulation model of the selected facility capable of reproducing both off design and dynamic performance was developed and delivered to the Air Force to allow for further investigations. Book excerpt: A flow configuration of an existing low-speed, axial flow compressor test facility at the Turbopropulsion Laboratory, Naval Postgarduate School, Monterey, California, was redesigned in order to improve compressor inlet velocity distribution, improve mass flow measurement, and increase the power input. The design of the new configuration, consisting of an inlet nozzle, ducting, throttling device upstream of the compressor, and a diffusor downstream of it, is reported. The redesign is based on using the existing free-vortex type and solid-body type bladings, and the newly designed symmetrical blading. (Author).

Book excerpt: A review is made of test cell design options in order to identify characteristics of jet engine test facilities to be constructed in the 1970's and designed to be operable for a minimum of twenty years. The necessity of providing replacements for many current facilities is documented, and the factors which will ensure future production capability and economic feasibility are detailed. Present turbine engines are reviewed and projections of future engines and aircraft are made. A confidential supplement is available for qualified recipients. (Author).

Book excerpt: The present book describes the development history of turbojet engines, mainly in the web-type triangle Great Britain (USA) - Germany - Switzerland from early beginnings in the 1920s up to the first practical usage in the 1950s, before the still unbroken, grand impact of aero propulsion technology on global air traffic started. interconnections are highlighted, including the considerable impact of axial-flow compressor design know-how of the Swiss/German company BBC Brown Boveri & Cie. on both sides. The author reveals significant undercurrents which led to a considerable exchange, and thus change in understanding of the technical-historical perspective, especially in the decisive years before WWII, and thus closes gaps in the unilateral views of this ground-breaking technical advancement. The old ‘Whittle vs. von Ohain Saga’ is not repeated in full, but addressed in sufficient detail to understand the considerably enlarged narrative scope.
