Book excerpt: A miniature thermoacoustic refrigerator is being developed for the purpose of cooling integrated circuits below their failure temperature when used in hot environments. The development of an electrically powered acoustic driver that powers the thermoacoustic refrigerator is described. The driver utilizes a flexural tri-laminar piezoelectric disk to generate one to two Watts of acoustic power at 4 kHz in 15 bar of He-Kr gas mixture. This thesis is the second of two driver development theses, which includes the information on the assembly of three drivers and their quantitative performance with a pressurized test resonator. A maximum acoustic power output of 0.5 Watt was achieved with the third driver.

Book excerpt: This updated new edition provides an introduction to the field of thermoacoustics. All of the key aspects of the topic are introduced, with the goal of helping the reader to acquire both an intuitive understanding and the ability to design hardware, build it, and assess its performance. Weaving together intuition, mathematics, and experimental results, this text equips readers with the tools to bridge the fields of thermodynamics and acoustics. At the same time, it remains firmly grounded in experimental results, basing its discussions on the distillation of a body of experiments spanning several decades and countries. The book begins with detailed treatment of the fundamental physical laws that underlie thermoacoustics. It then goes on to discuss key concepts, including simple oscillations, waves, power, and efficiency. The remaining portions of the book delve into more advanced topics and address practical concerns in applications chapters on hardware and measurements. With its careful progression and end-of-chapter exercises, this book will appeal to graduate students in physics and engineering as well as researchers and practitioners in either acoustics or thermodynamics looking to explore the possibilities of thermoacoustics. This revised and expanded second edition has been updated with an eye to modern technology, including computer animations and DeltaEC examples.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the project was to a Small Thermoacoustic Refrigerator (SMATAR) capable of providing 10W of cooling using 2 bar helium or 2 W using 1 bar air over a 25 K temperature span in a 4 cubic inch package. The device was to use inexpensive transducers and stack and heat exchanger materials and be easy to manufacture. At the end of the grant period, a basic design was complete on paper but the prototype was not yet constructed. The prototype as constructed was capable of providing 0.5W of cooling over a 4 K temperature span using one bar air as a working fluid.

Book excerpt: A miniature Thermoacoustic refrigerator is being developed to cool integrated circuits - which must sometimes operate at high temperatures nearing the upper threshold of their tolerance - to temperature spans more within the circuits1 tolerable limits, without the need of the chemicals of a traditional refrigerating system. The development of an electrically powered acoustic driver that powers the thermoacoustic refrigerator is described, as well as different schemes to improve its delivered acoustic power. The driver utilizes a flexural tri- laminar piezoelectric disk to generate one to two Watts of acoustic power at 4 kHz in 15 bar of He-Kr gas mixture. Two different drivers are tested on a pressurized test resonator, and their quantitative performance is analyzed. The analysis of the drivers performance indicates one power-improvement scheme may be faulty, while data taken before the second broke indicates its design may be beneficial to power-improvement. Tests are also conducted using a refrigerating resonator; these first attempts to meet design criteria of temperature span and cooling power are unsuccessful, but the results obtained - including a thermodynamic coefficient of performance (COP) 13.1% below the modeled ideal value for the given data set - with less- than- ideal acoustic power delivered to the resonator signal suggest continued research is worthwhile.

Book excerpt: A new design for a thermoacoustic heat driven cooler is proposed and has been analyzed via a numerical model. The engine layout incorporates a half wavelength or can be run in a full wavelength with dual prime movers and dual coolers coupled thermally in parallel. Both simplified models and more physically realistic models have been constructed and adjusted for good performance. Simplified models indicate an overall COP of 0.48, which means that the total cooling power is a factor of 0.48 smaller than the total heat input. More detailed and realistic models indicate an overall COP of 0.43. Geometry numbers have been finalized and much of the drafting for an experimental unit has been completed. We hope that high power densities can be achieved with this engine. We also believe that overall COP's in the range of 0.6 to 0.7 may be possible with further improvements. Additionally, we have numerically studied issues of achieving acoustic onset with this engine and the sensitivity of the onset condition to the model parameters. We have also developed a new heat exchanger fabrication method which will allow us to achieve the smallness of geometry scale that was discussed in the previous report. The practical result is better thermal coupling with less acoustic dissipation. The fabrication method is also considerably simpler than our previous method.

Book excerpt: The numerical study has shown that the stack length and the position of the stack in the resonator have a significant impact on the overall performance of the thermoacoustic device. Air at standard temperature and pressure is employed as the working gas. The acoustic power source was a 15 W speaker operating at a frequency of 450 Hz. Based on a numerical study, the stack length was set equal to 3 cm with its center located at a distance of 5 cm from the driver-end of a 38.5 cm long resonator tube. The temperature difference between the two ends of the stack was set equal to 25 K.A thermoacoustic refrigerator was developed based on the designed parameters. Preliminary experimental results have shown that a temperature difference of as high as 23 K was established across the stack. In order to exploit the thermoacoustic effect for heat pumping; heat exchangers were attached at both ends of stack. Water at ambient temperature was chosen as the working fluid for the heat exchangers to facilitate heat transfer to or from the stack. A pump was used to circulate water through both heat exchangers. Experimental results have shown that water temperature difference of 3 K for cold heat exchanger and 7.5 K for hot heat exchanger were established. The maximum coefficient of performance (COP) of this device was 1.5. Further research and development is needed in order to explore the full potential of the device in refrigeration applications. Book excerpt: The design, development, and tests of a high frequency thermoacoustic refrigerator are presented. It was developed to operate at 5000 Hz with a piezoelectric driver and air at 1 atmosphere. The stack is unusual in that it is made of random fibers which can provide an enormous surface area for interaction, with the sound field. At each end of the stack heat was transferred using copper heat exchangers. A temperature difference of 50 C was produced for sound levels of 160 dB at the stack The cooling power of this device was in the range of 0.4 to 1 watt. High frequency operation leads to a large critical temperature gradient across the stack of l25 deg C/cm, which opens up the possibility of producing very low temperatures in suitable geometries. The impressive performance of our device demonstrates its potential for refrigeration of small objects, such as high speed electronic components and biologica samples. The device is compact (3.5 cm long), simple, and it can be interfaced to microelectronics for heat removal applications.

Book excerpt: A miniature thermoacoustic refrigerator was developed for cooling electronic components. The refrigerator is driven at 5,000 Hz by a piezoelectric driver and it consists of an acoustic resonator, a stack, and copper heat exchangers. The working fluid is pressurized helium gas between 10 to 20 atmospheres. Sound was produced with different piezoelectric drivers, a monomorph, a bimorph, and Tonpilz driver to achieve the highest intensity possible. Since the operating frequency is high, the refrigerator is compact, being about 10 cm long. Temperature differences of 12 deg C across the stack were achieved at sound levels of l60dB. The performance of the refrigerator scaled with frequency according to existing models of thermoacoustic heat engines.
