Book excerpt: One-pot post-polymerization modification reactions such as azo-coupling and tricyanovinylation reactions were employed to synthesize a series of polymers containing different nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophoric as well as ionic functionalities. We have extended and established the versatility of our earlier reported post-modification strategy to incorporate various heteroaromatic chromophores as well as ionic functionalities in the polymers, at the final stage of synthesis. The correlation between different heteroaromatic chromophore structures and the NLO properties of the polymers was extensively studied, Polymers containing heteroaromatic chromophores exhibit improved temporal stability and enhanced NLO activity. Polymers with ionic chromophores were employed to fabricate NLO active ultra-thin films using electrostatic self-assembling (ESA) technique. Attempts were also made to synthesize second order NLO active polydiacetylene derivatives using post azo-coupling reaction.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel class of second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) side-chain polymer: side-chain polyquinolines was developed. The synthetic approach includes the synthesis of chromophore precursor-containing bis(ketomethylene) monomers and bis(ortho-aminoketone) monomers, the polymerization of the two monomers, and post-tricyanovinylation to activate the side-chain chromophores of the poly- quinolines. The synthesized NLO side-chain polyquinolines possess high glass transition temperature, good thermal stability, and processibility. The testing results show that the NLO side-chain polyquinolines exhibit a large electro-optical coefficient (r33) value (up to 17 pm/V measured at 0.63 micrometer, and 9 pm/V at 0.83 micrometer), and temporal stability of dipole alignment at 100 deg C for more than 500 hours.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research accomplished in this project consists of four tasks each dealing with a different class of nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. Task (I): Second-order nonlinear optical materials. We developed new chromophores and processing to produce electro-optic materials with enhanced optical transparency towards the visible (>=700 nm), increased chemical and thermal stability and stability of poled alignment for 1000 hours at 100 deg C. Several approaches showed promises and we accomplished a great deal. Also, we developed polyurethane cross-linking polymers to produce thermally stable poling alignment in both molecular-ionic type and neutral type second-order chromophores. In both cases stability up to 1000 hours at 100 deg C was achieved. In another approach, in collaboration with Professor Shea of University of California, Irvine, we have employed ormosils to produce stable poled alignments. Task (II): Third-order nonlinear optical materials. We synthesized a group of phosphoylides containing a polarizable P atom and investigated their X(3) behavior via femtosecond Kerr gate measurements. By using optically heterodyned and phase-tuned Kerr gate techniques, we obtained both the signs and the magnitudes of the real and the imaginary components of X(3).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introduction: Nanotechnology and its underpinning sciences are progressing with unprecedented rapidity. With technical advances in a variety of nanoscale fabrication and manipulation technologies, the whole topical area is maturing into a vibrant field that is generating new scientific research and a burgeoning range of commercial applications, with an annual market already at the trillion dollar threshold. The means of fabricating and controlling matter on the nanoscale afford striking and unprecedented opportunities to exploit a variety of exotic phenomena such as quantum, nanophotonic and nanoelectromechanical effects. Moreover, researchers are elucidating new perspectives on the electronic and optical properties of matter because of the way that nanoscale materials bridge the disparate theories describing molecules and bulk matter. Surface phenomena also gain a greatly increased significance; even the well-known link between chemical reactivity and surface-to-volume ratio becomes a major determinant of physical properties, when it operates over nanoscale dimensions. Against this background, this comprehensive work is designed to address the need for a dynamic, authoritative and readily accessible source of information, capturing the full breadth of the subject. Its six volumes, covering a broad spectrum of disciplines including material sciences, chemistry, physics and life sciences, have been written and edited by an outstanding team of international experts. Addressing an extensive, cross-disciplinary audience, each chapter aims to cover key developments in a scholarly, readable and critical style, providing an indispensible first point of entry to the literature for scientists and technologists from interdisciplinary fields. The work focuses on the major classes of nanomaterials in terms of their synthesis, structure and applications, reviewing nanomaterials and their respective technologies in well-structured and comprehensive articles with extensive cross-references. It has been a constant surprise and delight to have found, amongst the rapidly escalating number who work in nanoscience and technology, so many highly esteemed authors willing to contribute. Sharing our anticipation of a major addition to the literature, they have also captured the excitement of the field itself in each carefully crafted chapter. Along with our painstaking and meticulous volume editors, full credit for the success of this enterprise must go to these individuals, together with our thanks for (largely) adhering to the given deadlines. Lastly, we record our sincere thanks and appreciation for the skills and professionalism of the numerous Elsevier staff who have been involved in this project, notably Fiona Geraghty, Megan Palmer and Greg Harris, and especially Donna De Weerd-Wilson who has steered it through from its inception. We have greatly enjoyed working with them all, as we have with each other.

Book excerpt: This report discusses the use of the use of polymers instead of and in conjunction with, traditional platforms such as indium phosphide and ferroelectric ceramic lithium niobate. Critical comparisons are made between use of polymers and alternative. This review report gives an overview of all the elements of optical transmission and switching systems that are used in telecommunications and is a fully interdisciplinary account of materials and device design issues. An additional indexed section containing several hundred abstracts from the Rapra Polymer Library database gives useful references for further reading.
