The SASS is a periodic integrated system of sample surveys conducted by the NCES that provides information on public and private schools, public school districts, teachers, and administrators. The survey includes several types of teacher and administrator respondents. The 1991 SASS is a set of four related surveys dealing with teacher supply and demand, school administrator characteristics, information about schools and students, and teacher characteristics. This manual introduces the design effect and the GVF for estimating sampling variances for complex surveys such as the SASS. Appendixes contain: (1) variables selected for average design effects and GVF fitting; (2) average design effects tables; (3) GVF tables; and (4) a sum of weights table. An introduction provides a conceptual and contextual discussion, addressing the reasoning for using general analytical techniques to calculate standard errors for complex survey data. In Section 3, the procedure and computational formulas for calculating the design effects for the most common types of estimates (totals, means, and proportions) are presented. Section 4 then gives the technical details of GVF fitting. The design effect and GVF results obtained from the 1990-92 SASS are presented in Section 5. The electrification and intelligence of automobiles have brought new problems to society: on the one hand, electrically driven vehicles have lower operating noise, which makes pedestri-ans’ perception of vehicles weakened; on the other hand, with the deepening of intel-ligence, the control of vehicles will gradually be yielded from drivers to vehicles, which will largely cause the lack of human-vehicle trust. If these two problems are not solved, they will largely affect the efficiency of future road traffic and even bring potential danger. Therefore, it is necessary to explore a vehicle external sound effect as the external interaction interface of future vehicles to improve human-vehicle per-ception and enhance human-vehicle mutual trust. This paper takes the external sound design of quiet vehicles as the starting point, and divides the external sound design of vehicles into two aspects: quality design and functional design through literature research and combing of sound design related theories and methods. In the research of quality sense design, the paper explores the sound quality categories suitable for quiet vehicles based on human perception of sound quality, and realizes the decomposition of quality sense design elements through psychoacoustic experiments, and constructs the relevant design models, which provides theoretical guidance for the design of quality sense of exterior sound effects of quiet vehicles. In the functional design research, this paper conducted an in-depth investigation and study of human-vehicle conflict based on China’s road en-vironment and traffic participants, extracted a total of four categories and six types of human-vehicle interaction needs, and accordingly designed, optimized and verified the interaction information, and explored the design strategy of functional sound ef-fects.

Book excerpt: We evaluate multiple variants of a commonly used intervention to boost education in developing countries -- the conditional cash transfer (CCT) -- with a student level randomization that allows us to generate intra-family and peer-network variation. We test three treatments: a basic CCT treatment based on school attendance, a savings treatment that postpones a bulk of the cash transfer due to good attendance to just before children have to reenroll, and a tertiary treatment where some of the transfers are conditional on students' graduation and tertiary enrollment rather than attendance. On average, the combined incentives increase attendance, pass rates, enrollment, graduation rates, and matriculation to tertiary institutions. Changing the timing of the payments does not change attendance rates relative to the basic treatment but does significantly increase enrollment rates at both the secondary and tertiary levels. Incentives for graduation and matriculation are particularly effective, increasing attendance and enrollment at secondary and tertiary levels more than the basic treatment. We find some evidence that the subsidies can cause a reallocation of responsibilities within the household. Siblings (particularly sisters) of treated students work more and attend school less than students in families that received no treatment. We also find that indirect peer influences are relatively strong in attendance decisions with the average magnitude similar to that of the direct effect.
