Book excerpt: Robert Black and Ormond Sanderson are pivotal figures in North Carolina's art and design worlds, not only for being among the first in the state to usher in modern interior design, but also for their own major accomplishments as artists. In the late 1950s, just as Research Triangle Park began turning central North Carolina into a magnet for modern technology, Black and Sanderson's Strawvalley design complex introduced fine crafts by skilled local artisans alongside furniture and consumer goods created by such well-known architect/designers as Mies van der Rode, Harry Bertoia, Eero Saarinen, Marcel Breuer, and le Corbusier. At the same time, they pursued their own distinctively innovative art work. Design Duet includes a number of Robert Black's striking collage-paintings and award-winning contemporary stoneware alongside the exquisitely etched and glazed enamels that led the organizers of the 1964 New York World's Fair to choose Ormond Sanderson to represent the best of American art in its United States Pavilion. These are presented in the context of the stunning contemporary home they created from an abandoned rural school. This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Design Duet: the creative lives of Robert Keith Black and J. Ormond Sanderson, Jr., March 15 through September 9, 2018.

Book excerpt: This 2004 Companion provides a biographical, theatrical and social-cultural background for Verdi's music, examines in detail important general aspects of its style and method of composing, and synthesizes stylistic themes in discussions of representative works. Aspects of Verdi's milieu, style, creative process and critical reception are explored in essays by highly reputed specialists. Individual chapters address themes in Verdi's life, his role in transforming the theater business, and his relationship to Italian Romanticism and the Risorgimento. Chapters on four operas representative of the different stages of Verdi's career, Ernani, Rigoletto, Don Carlos and Otello synthesize analytical themes introduced in the more general chapters and illustrate the richness of Verdi's creativity. The Companion also includes chapters on Verdi's non-operatic songs and other music, his creative process, and scholarly writing about Verdi from the nineteenth-century to the present day.

Try it yourself, and … welcome a bit of floral enchantment into your life.” —Amy Stewart, author of The Drunken Botanist Inspired by the Victorian-era language of flowers, a posy is a small, round bouquet of flowers, herbs, and plants meant to convey a message, such as dahlias for gratitude, sunflowers for adoration, or thyme for bravery. These floral poems have become Teresa Sabankaya’s signature. Brides want them for their weddings, but a posy is a lovely gift any time of year, and one that readers can easily put together from their garden or with blooms from their local florist. In The Posy Book, Sabankaya shares step-by-step instructions, floral recipes for more than 20 posies, and ideas for seasonal variations. A modern floral dictionary, with 12 original paintings by celebrated illustrator Maryjo Koch, will help readers craft their own posies filled with personal meaning.
