The vessel has been designed to do effective all-weather research primarily in the North and South Atlantic Oceans. It has been the desire of the Institution to produce the most versatile and efficient oceanographic vessel afloat and for that reason considerable effort has been expended on the design. The vessel will be named ATLANTIS II.
